Apart from that, please keep enjoying.
Three weeks have passed since the console incident, and things haven't changed.
Riley would now rarely react to Joy's control, Anger, Fear, Disgust, and Sadness weren't having trouble though.
Joy now sighed as she layed upside down on the couch.
Fear, who was at the console, couldn't help but feel awful for the golden emotion, she was his new girlfriend after all.
Sighing, he mastered up the courage to walk towards her.
"J-Joy"
The golden emotion looked up, a smile formed as Fear sat next to her, she then got herself out of her upside down position and soon, they were next to each other.
"Please. You can't go on like this. All upset." He took her hand. "I can't stand it."
Joy smiled wider at the youngest emotion for a second, then sighed again. "I know, I just wish I could find out what's happening to the console, it now works on everyone except me."
She then frowned. "Do you think this has to do with what Surprise did to Riley?"
"We fixed the console after... sure Riley still has does weird stages but they passed on." Fear replied.
He then got another idea.
"Maybe we should call some Mind Workers to fix it? I'm sure they might know a thing or two." Fear suggested.
Joy nodded. "I guess that could work, gosh, this is the worst thing that has happened ever since Surprise arrived and left. (1)
"She won't come back." Fear promised her.
Joy stood up, maybe some time in her room might cheer her up. "Thanks. I'm sure we can fix this... somehow."
After climbing the stairs and arriving at the small hallway which had all the emotion's rooms, Joy entered the one with the yellow door. (2)
After Surprise left, Joy took her stuff to the conductors of The Train of Thought, telling them to get rid of it, (To the Memory Dump, of course!) since they wouldn't be needing it anymore. After that, Joy moved out of her and Sadness' room and made herself comfortable in Surprise's past room. And ever since, they put a special tape along the PUBERTY button so no more mischiveous emotions or whatever else it did could appear.
Groaning unhappy, she got herself in her bed (Which was actually a bathtub).
After a moment of hesitation, she turned her head to one of the paintings in the wall with her in it, except a bit smaller and with a bigger version of herself, the top read 'Me & Mom' in it, of course, she didn't have a mom, but she decided it wouldn't hurt to pretend sometimes she did, although in the end, she knew it was a guilty pleasure.
She then got off the bathtub and headed to the painting until she was a few inches away from it.
"Mom? I'm...I'm having trouble right now. I'm not dumb, I know if things keep on like this, Riley will be exposed to the real world and I... I don't think she's ready... yet. She will soon, I promise, but it's...it's too early. I've seen others this age already with piercings, frowns, and if I can't take control anymore, how would I keep making sure she's enjoying life?"
Now, you probably think that the painting would reply, but no.
In stead, she got this answer...
... A normal painting.
Sighing, Joy looked down, then her eyes went wide with an idea.
"Of course! Why haven't I thought of that before?"
Her excitement building up again, she headed out of the room. "If there's one emotion who's the smartest here, she might have some answers."
Sadness blinked at surprise at Joy's suggestion. "You want to what?"
They were in the Breakroom which was located at the end of the hall with the lockers and under the stairs, here no one might hear them.
"Tell me all you know about the chapters of the Mind Manual titled Puberty." Joy replied. "If there's something that has to do with Riley's behavior lately, it must possibly mean that."
Sadness sighed. "Joy... are you sure...?"
"Positive." The golden emotion replied.
Sadness then thought for a moment before replying. "That strange stage begins at twelve, thirteen if lucky, it's when... when..."
"What?" Joy asked, she couldn't help it, she could feel herself shaking a bit.
"When the owner of the mind rebels."
"With their parents? Duh."
"No, with their own pleasures."
Joy blinked. She knew 'pleasures' might mean something, or someone, like herself.
"It's when they start to decide it isn't as important as makeup and eyeshadow. Those things."
Joy gulped. "And the causes...?"
"A big part is a new emotion called Surprise who takes over until the emotion's owner turnes fifteen, sometimes sixteen, and leaves when a new emotion takes over. Many are born with Joy as their leader, but once that button gets hit, it's hard for it to stay in lead."
Joy's pupils got smaller just hearing that.
If Sadness took over, Riley won't really think of happiness anymore or good times.
If Anger took over, Riley would ignore all the things she currently loves and would then make fun of it, she would also stubbornly not listen to heartwarming things about life and stay with the 'cool' things.
If Fear took over, maybe Riley won't be taking any worth-it chances anymore.
And if Disgust took over, Riley would grow desperate of looking good everyday and force herself to do dumb things to make her body look nicer.
This wasn't good.
"Is there a way to prevent it?" Joy asked, then realized they couldn't skip Puberty forever. "At least for a bit more?"
Sadness frowned with thought, then nodded much to Joy's relief.
"If we can find Surprise, maybe we could prevent her of keeping hurting Riley."
"Another idea?"
That's when Sadness started taking deep, fearful breaths, yet she managed to nod and gistured Joy to follow her.
They made their way to the area full of Mind Manuais. Sadness gulped as she flipped through few and trembled when she removed one from a shelf and opened it to read.
Not bearing it anymore, she got to the floor crying.
Cocking an eyebrow, Joy opened the book, and immediately knew what Sadness was crying about.
There was a Chip they could attach to the console and give Riley a bit more time to enjoy just being herself. Of course, it would eventually go off or break, but whatever time they had left before full puberty hit, Joy would enjoy that time she had left for Riley, and maybe that time left with joyful memories might give her an advantage for Riley to decide she still needed to feel happy and not 'party' with the most boring people.
There was more joyful memories from Riley than angry, sad, fearful, or disgusted ones all combined after all.
But in order to do all that, they would have to go to get out of Headquarters with The Train of Thought, go to Imagination Land, through Subconscious so they could get to Fearful Forest, The Cave of Wishes, and, finally, an office tower in Riley's mind that Joy was surprised she never heard of before called Mind Works.
As she looked up, a smile formed on her face.
Sadness gulped. "Joy, don't get any ideas."
"When is Riley's birthday?" Joy asked, remembering that actual puberty started at age thirteen, they would have to get the chip before that.
"Tomorrow."
That was bad.
"Oh well, we'll have to do something about it before then." Joy headed to her room.
"Joy?" Sadness called to her, "what are you doing?"
Joy returned with the Bottomless Bag on her shoulder.
"Pack your stuff Sadness, we're all going on an inside out trip."
