Chapter Three: Investigations
In K-city, Noire's home. The black-haired woman entered her home. Back from seeing that mysterious woman with shopping.
She stomped to her table. Carrying a few things with a motorcycle helmet on her head.
She just bought it thinking of needing one. It is white with blue flames. Even if messes with her hair.
Noire took off her helmet and placed it by her on the table. Place her bags on the table. One bag had a book on motorcycles. Along with a takeout bag from Greggs.
It was a sandwich chain. She got an egg sandwich and started eating. While looking over the motorcycle book.
Hoping to learn about riding Cavaliere better, even if she can right now.
She bit hard into her lunch, still trying to ignore what she heard.
"Damn, the signs are becoming clear," that woman's voice said. "We're becoming goddesses."
Noire growled, her eyes changing to green. "Why?" She put her lunch down.
That question is filled with frustration. She got an answer to what she is. A goddess. One could be a ruler of a city. A fighter who protects.
But if she is one, did that mean she wasn't her? Just a thing that isn't needed. That is what angered her the most. The goddesses aren't needed, so by that, she shouldn't be here.
But…
Noire lowered her head. "My dreams, were they telling me something is wrong? A thing that needs to be fought. My … tactical vehicle came to me. It is my chariot, that only I can use. By all accounts, those are what a goddess has. Does that mean, I'm?"
Noire's eyes went back to normal. When thinking about it, on some level she knew. Her strength wasn't normal. Not where she could lift cars, but stronger than a normal person. Wanting to wield a sword, learning to use guns. The signs of being able to fight.
"Now what?" Noire looked at the door. "Do I talk to someone about this? Let them know this."
That answer came: no. If what that woman said is true. She could be locked up or killed. While it could be wrong, there are too many signs to be true. Now that just left her on what to do.
The best thing is to keep a low profile. Keep looking into what created her. That is the best bet.
Still, she wondered who that person was.
The next day. In a snug home, a light snore came from a twin bed. By a wall is a cheap bookshelf that is nearly filled. Old and new books on it. Neatly placed in order.
On a desk in a corner was a laptop, turned off with a wireless mouse. Notebooks by it. The home is tidy.
As for the sole individual, she was sleeping in bed. The bed has a small nightstand. A small lamp with an alarm clock.
But soon a noise rang out, causing a groan.
"I'm up," the female growled, reaching for the alarm clock, after a second.
She stopped the irritating alarm. Looking at the time about seven, her normal time to wake up.
She yawned. Her blue eyes looked at her desk, giving a nod.
"Almost time to work," she muttered.
She removed her pink and white covers and stood. She wasn't over tall per se, about a medium height. Her brown hair looked soft, a little past her shoulders.
Her skin was close to a soft tan. She wore a long pink t-shirt, across the chest "Fear me. For I'm a reader." A pair of white socks on her feet.
With one stretch, walked toward her small kitchen.
"I'm for eggs today. A good tangerine jam with toast," she said, walking to her fridge.
Getting out two brown eggs with a tangerine jam, she went about placing them on the counter.
She got a pan and placed it on the stove. In a little oil, and turned on the fire to let it get warm.
She got two pieces of bread. Placed them in a green and white toaster. But not starting them, wanting them to start when her eggs are about ready.
"Now for some eggs," she said with a hum.
The oil should be hot enough. She got the two eggs and cracked them over the pan, a sizzle from their landing.
She seasoned them. After a few minutes, flip them with a spatula. With a nod, she started the toaster for her toast.
Along with a plate. After a minute, she turned off the stove and put her eggs on the plate.
"Another victory for our heroine, Blanc, who beat the odds of fixing her breakfast," Blanc giggled.
As she had to learn to cook for herself. For she lives alone, well not quite.
The event that led to her birth. Sadly when finding that black-haired woman. It showed what she is.
One that she hoped wouldn't be. With a sigh got her toast and put jam on them.
She walked to her table. Sitting on a pink chair, started eating. She blushed a little when tasting the tangerine jam.
Reminding her of when first arrived in C-city. They were the first things she eat, while those weren't the best. They still tasted good. Thankfully, she could get better ones with other types of food.
Then again, C-city is known to produce various foods. With all its different provinces. Sure it looked cold with some snow but isn't.
Well, it does get colder than before, maybe with the current conditions. As a goddess helped to keep this under control.
Still, C-city can make food. Export it to others. Even if the others can make their food.
Along with another oddity of C-city. That isn't used as much.
Blanc sighed. "Again with the feelings. Is this because of my goddess nature? Still." She took a bite of her eggs.
It was nice. But her concerns are still on her mind.
She finished her meal and got up. To clean the dishes, and put them away. Then went to change her clothes. Keeping to a timetable of the day.
Given she does work from her rented home. Writing articles and short stories.
Earning money to live. Still, she is looking for things. For her writing and research. Sure she wanted to write but has a hunger for knowledge also.
A sigh came from the young woman's mouth. "My answer leads to more mystery. I don't like where this is going."
She arrived at her wardrobe and opened it to see her spare clothes. Mainly dresses, with a few pants and shorts. Given how the weather is nice.
She took off her sleep shirt and socks. To show her lean body. Her breasts weren't overly big, but noticeable. Her legs had silky look with being long. Her white panties have a cute mushroom on the back. The front has a cute pink star along with a brown block that has a question mark. Showcasing her firm rear.
She changed into a soft white dress. The dress had blue on the helm. She looked in the mirror and reached for a brush. She fixed her bed hair, with a nod.
Blanc walked to her desk. Started up her laptop, then went to her coffee maker, feeling the need for a dark roast.
She fixed the coffee maker, a nice blend that had earthy notes. A Sumatra blend as it is called.
Given her mood, she wanted something to zap the favor for now.
She went back to her desk and sat in a comfortable chair. Logged in to her laptop and got to work.
The hour passed on her work, with two cups of coffee. Showing her distress as she sticks to one. But wanted more.
After another hour, she finished the first part.
"Another task is done," Blanc said, working her kinks out from sitting.
Still a bit more is needed. Along with seeing if she could make a novel.
Blanc sadly smiled. "Will I get that chance? I'm busy with my articles. Along with finding I'm a goddess. That is something that will play a large part in my life now."
She wanted to deny that, maybe before seeing that woman. Getting a tactical vehicle was a sign, with her getting weapons.
Those things didn't just come to her for the hell of it. Along with being near K-city. Sure she felt on edge there, as with C-city. Being she could be hunted.
But felt a presence there, she could have sensed that woman. If that could be applied.
"Might as well go out," Blanc replied with a sigh. She still has some more work, but it was near lunch.
While she could eat at home, a little fresh air might help. With getting a nice meal.
She put on a white hat, which has a tint of blue on the helm. A pair of brown sandals on her feet.
She walked to the door. Opening and locking the door, she could feel it wasn't that cold or hot. The sun is out with clouds.
Her eyes spotted her t-vehicle parked by her home. Waiting for her.
"Time to head out, Karuta," Blanc said to her Trailmaster XRX three hundred.
Its motor started up, showing it is ready to go. Its red paint looked to be glowing, as it was ready for Blanc.
Blanc smiled, strange to have such a companion. Still, it is nice to have one.
Blanc hopped in. The white seat is firm. She put the seatbelt on. Her hands gripped the orange steering wheel. Its steering wheel has four buttons that are used for various functions.
She put it into gear and drove off. While it is strange to drive a kart around a city. There are others like it.
Not like Karuta, but close to it. She spotted all the people moving about.
She lived in the southern part of C-city. Off in the distance was a castle-like building. The home of the ruler of this city.
It was a soft pink with some patches of white. That used to be the former goddess's home.
Blanc clicked her tongue. Once again, feeling something is amiss with it. Still, her eyes went to the road, driving toward a place to eat.
"Might as well get a pastry," Blanc said, thinking of having it with plenty of mushrooms, beef, and maybe potatoes.
A hearty dish, enough for lunch and dinner. She arrived at the place.
It had a homey look with its wood finish. Not too big or small. Able to hold a few who wanted to eat there.
She nodded and parked in the parking lot. It wasn't crowded, given it just opened. Still, she could smell the aroma.
It has such a nice aroma, Blanc thought while getting out of her t-vehicle, and walking to get her a meal.
As for her t-vehicle, it waited patiently. Remembering when it appeared before its master.
It even challenged her. When appearing before Blanc, trapping her as it drove a donut around her. When she was alone in an isolated part of C-city. Given it needed to test her with no intervention from anyone. Leading her to command it to stop, showing that she was its master.
As they do have problems, the most obvious one is something stopping them. That and along with the threat. It might be taken care of, but the signs point to no.
Blanc walked out of the restaurant, carrying her takeout bag. Holding her pastry which should be nice and fresh.
Blanc got into her kart and drove off. Her eyes watch the road, thankfully she can drive. Mostly from reading and rough experiences.
Which is why she knows various things. Learning what to do, helping her in living.
Blanc sighed again, thoughts on what to do now. The revelation of being a goddess.
Sure she was leery of things, appearing on the outskirts of C-city. No memory of her past. Receiving her weapons with Karuta.
All pointing to be far from normal. Leaving her with more questions.
Blanc arrived back at her home. Her thoughts were troubled about what to do.
"Should I talk to that woman more?" Blanc pondered while walking to her home.
Could she have left on better terms? Have a way to talk to each other. If the need comes for them to share information. Even … join forces?
Blanc frowned, opening the door and walking in. The mystery of how the previous goddesses died.
That has no clear context. Not only the reason why they fought and joined forces. Even the number of them.
From going the current number that has been … born. There are three. But it seemed to be four that faced this threat.
If that is the case. Who was this fourth goddess? What role did she play?
She nearly found information on who the previous goddesses were.
Now that bit is more important. She needed to find out if she was reborn.
But, if she was reborn. Why haven't her memories come back?
"That is what eats me the most," Blanc growled, her blue eyes turning red.
She winched and looked at a mirror. She gulped even while they turned back to normal.
"Now they show." Blanc's heart is in her throat. "I've never seen them change before. Is it because of seeing that person? Or I've never seen them as it happened so easily for me."
That is the scary part. Her eyes could have changed without her noticing. As this change seems so easy.
A way of showing their rage? A means of being ready to fight.
Blanc sat at her table and dug into her pastry. Even with the beef so juicy and tender. Along with the mushroom. All blended nicely, her mind can't stop thinking.
This has to be a cruel twist of fate. Next thing you know, she got stuck with some idiot who flies by the seat of their pants. Or just a sidekick to them.
No thanks.
She wanted to have this peaceful life. Not worrying about some battle.
Blanc shallowed her bite, now thinking about her latest dream. As she can remember them, that alone could be an omen.
Maybe, it was her goddess side trying to tell her something.
The young woman could see half of her pastry done, no longer hungry. So, she stood and got a ziplock bag. Put it in there and stored it in her fridge for later.
Blanc sat by her table, taking a deep breath on what could help. "Okay, this might work. My meditation has helped in clearing my mind on writing. So, I might find something by doing it."
She has mediated before. She did read it helps with writing and focusing. Which it does for her. So, this might work, if not.
At least she could take this edge off.
Blanc stared at an open window, seeing the sky. Leading toward outside, calming her down. She slowly breathed, letting go of things that would stop her.
Some ideas for her novel came, not latching on to them. But remembering them for later.
Then a flash. Suddenly, she was facing a shadowed figure. Looking a little taller than her. But no other features.
The person from her dreams.
"So, you are finally waking," a female voice replied, almost sounding like her.
Only more confident.
Blanc felt a frown coming on, not sure where she was as it was just them. But felt she knew this person.
"So you say," Blanc growled, not sure what to call this person. "Now what? Are you me?"
A hum came, a minute of waiting, then an answer, "In one sense, yes. I'm you as you are me. Two conscious sharing a body."
The wheels turned in Blanc's head. That sounded like a split personality. If this was her, why didn't it appear as now?
"Why haven't you shown yourself as this? You've only appeared in my dreams," Blanc demanded.
The shadow folded her arms. "Multiple reasons."
Blanc clicked her tongue. "Start talking. I want answers, am I a goddess?"
The shadow sighed. "Yes, we are one. With that black-haired woman."
Blanc clenched her teeth. Not only did she get an answer, this shadow knows about her encounter with that person.
"Then, why was I born? So far; humans don't need us. There is no reason for me," she muttered sadly.
Only for a tongue to click. "Wrong."
Blanc growled, "Being secretive, aren't you."
"Yes and no," the shadow replied.
Blanc nearly cursed but stopped when the shadow raised a hand. Quieting down the woman.
"You've seen the signs," the shadow replied.
Blanc shivered. She can't be talking about those, they can't be real.
The shadow nodded. "Our understanding was hindered by others. Not realizing what they've done. Because of … orders. I'm just as much in the dark. But, someone wanted to prevent us from being born. Leading to this.
"I know this is the reason why we were born. It is because deep in people's hearts. They loved their preceding goddess. Sensing things are wrong. Not honoring them, as they don't matter. Even losing their identity, as they're only things to be used."
Blanc lowered her head, she felt that. The young might not care, as they had never seen a goddess. But what about the ones who saw a goddess?
Know what they are like. How they lived. Gave their lives to protect them.
Then lose what made them, their history and identity. That is what she has been sensing.
"Am I."
"No way of telling," Blanc's shadow softly replied.
Blanc looked at the shadow, hoping for more.
"Whether we are a new goddess or reborn. The fact is, we were called. The people wanted us. Not this group who taken over, tainting the city."
Blanc raised a brow. "Taint? What are you talking about?"
The shadow slowly dissolved. "You will know, once you've fully awakened. When this … separation is fixed."
Blanc gasped, is that why she doesn't understand? Because she hasn't fully combined with her goddess side. "How? How do I fix this?"
The shadow is nearly gone, but its voice said, "When you take what should have been yours. Denying what a goddess owns, they had no right … subjugating it. By right, it is your property. As with your t-vehicle."
Blanc could see the window, back in her home. She lowered her head, this might be more serious than she thought. If what that shadow said is right, then something is wrong.
She could only think of one thing that was talked about. If she could control it, then things would change. At the same time, how many would be affected if she did it? This was a big deal.
Blanc reached out, and a flash of light, then a hammer appeared in her right hand. It was white with two blue sides on the head. Its handle is sturdy, lined with a hint of orange. She stared at her weapon.
"My normal weapon," Blanc muttered, feeling its weight. In her mind could see a different weapon, just as heavy and strong.
She placed it on the ground, then another flash. A white desert eagle appeared in her hands. It is finely grafted, not as heavy as a normal desert eagle, but has one hell of a kick.
Thankfully, she was able to find a range that allowed her to practice using firearms.
"The pistol I received as my weapon," Blanc replied, knowing the power of her weapons. "With Karuta, my chariot to ride into battle. Armaments of a goddess, for she will have a chariot.
"A chariot that embodies her. Not made by normal means, armed with weapons. To aid in her battles. Empowered by the faith of her followers. To combat threats to her land. Facing them as they were created by that faith to save them from the blackest horror. For which came numerous terrors. For that they were given their power, to save the ones who wanted to be protected."
Blanc has read that passage in an old book. A fable of what created the very first goddesses. By that, it nearly fits what goddesses are. They needed to have followers, and powerful weapons, all to protect where they ruled.
If that was the same as what made her. Did that mean, this horror might be real? Or is it another thing?
Blanc walked to her laptop, her weapons went back to their storage.
"Let's bust this out." She sat at her desk. "I need to check on something. If what the rumors have said, things are boiling under the surface."
After two hours, Blanc is driving in Karuta. She is heading toward the west side of C-city.
While what she is about to do is risky, it was needed.
"Karuta," Blanc spoke. "Here we go again. If I had any sense, I shouldn't be doing this. This is bad as watching that woman."
Karuta replied in its way. Knowing his master wanted to keep her peaceful life. It did see the reason why worrying about the mundane things. But, it was a vehicle meant for battle.
Nothing would change that. As she has proven to be a reliable master. Learning what to do, and being ready to take action.
If it was lucky, race against Cavaliere, the right way. Just between them, no masters to hold them back. T-vehicle to t-vehicle.
Blanc sighed at knowing what Karuta wanted. To race against that Cavaliere, given it did issue that challenge. At the same time, she didn't know what to think about that woman.
Seemly wanting to know who she is, and what brought her into being. The same as her.
"A soul brought with no way of knowing," Blanc said softly. "Born with nothing but with a will to live. Find what she is."
She pondered this on her drive. She gets thoughtful at times, muttering phases. On what she knows or problems to think about.
After a few minutes, she arrived at a grove. It is off highways, just a dirt road leading to it. Her t-vehicle can handle this road.
This place should have at least a monster or two. The reason why she is here.
Is mercenaries don't go hunting as this, leaving them alone. Unless monsters start invading, have someone hire them to take care of the problem.
More like pests in a sense.
Blanc frowned while getting out of her t-vehicle, on edge. She hasn't faced a monster, only read about them.
But getting closer, she felt something is wrong. Like a change is taking place.
"Karuta, be ready to leave," Blanc ordered, getting her hammer out.
The t-vehicle stayed on and backed up. It turned to where its master could leave here. The t-vehicle felt the danger of this place.
Blanc slowly walked toward what felt wrong. Her eyes looked at the trees, in case a monster is hiding there.
Then, she reached a small clearing. Her eyes narrowed at spotting two nesting lizards.
Both are gray with tails. Not that big, but felt off. They had a frill around their neck. Each had a bigger front left paw, still able to walk and run.
Blanc slowly moved behind a tree. Her hammer was still in hand, no point in underestimating these things.
Okay, just normal assaults, Blanc thought, knowing the names of these monsters.
Still, a nagging feeling is coming to her. She has read the current guide on monsters but found an old one.
In the old one, the monsters did have the same names but looked different. Even a few haven't been seen. As if they were made up. But then why did they share names? That nagged Blanc.
Her ears picked up a noise. She lowered while slowly looking around. Then cursed as a shadow came at her.
She leaped out of the way. Dodging a claw. Then glared at what attacked her, expecting an assault. But gasped at seeing a different monster.
It was a lite gray, standing hunched. A reptile appearance, its yellow eyes looking at Blanc. Around four feet tall.
Blanc frowned, this looks like an assault. It is a different type. A Riot, but not the one that is in the current guides, no. This one looks far more dangerous.
The Riot hissed while removing its hand from the tree. Showing a good thunk removed. It has a wicked-looking set of claws on its three fingers.
"It is strong," Blanc muttered, not sure about this.
She has read about monsters, and it seemed good. She can't but feel this Riot is different. It is fast and stronger than what is said.
The Riot leaped at Blanc with its talons. Its mouth is open to show rows of sharp teeth with a blue tongue.
Blanc growled, not going to back down from this monster. She attacked the leaping monster, knocking it up. But the Riot growled, going with the force.
Blanc narrowed her eyes, her opponent is showing intellect. As it grabbed a tree, climbing it to hiss at her. "Clever, bastard."
She sensed a presence behind her, she reacted with a hammer strike. Landing on a Riot that nearly blindsided her. It hissed, but with an overhead slam. Blanc bashed its skull in.
A bit of blood came out, a twitch but it didn't move.
Blanc nearly hurled at killing a life. But could hear a hiss, she looked at the tree. Seeing the Riot landing on all fours, glaring with its yellow eyes.
Blanc slowly moved to the side, her hammer ready for any attack. It seemed this monster didn't take kindly to her killing its own.
The brown-haired woman frowned, even if this was a monster. Why does it feel like a person is watching this? But she should be alone. Those thoughts were stopped by the monster leaping in the air.
This time, Blanc charged at her attacker. Instead of using her hammer, she dropped it and got her desert eagle. With a leap and twist. She went under the Riot, missing the talons by a few inches. She landed on her back and fired.
She felt the recoil of her pistol, thankfully her training helped. For the desert eagle fired two shots. One in the chest and head.
The Riot crashed, limp as it died from gunshots. Good-sized holes from those bullets as blood leaked onto the ground.
Blanc breathed from the fight and from taking their lives. But it needed to be done. Those monsters could have killed her. Her ears heard hissing.
She groaned and got up, her pistol at ready. It must be those two assaults. Her eyes widened to their limits when looking at them.
Seeing the two assaults getting bigger. Glowing yellow as this was taking place.
Blanc shot at them, killing them before they did anything. Best to be safe.
"What in hell is going on?" She didn't understand this. Those riots alone looked different.
Stronger than what mercenaries have reported. Not leaping high as that, looking as in her old bestiary.
As if they, she stopped thinking. She might've heard something.
Sure it might be nothing, but it's best to get hell out of here. She retrieved her hammer and put it away with her pistol. Rushed out of the grove.
Thankfully, she wasn't that far from Karuta. The motor ran, waiting for its master.
Blanc hopped in and pushed the gas. Leaving the area. Leaving a dust trail, given her t-vehicle is faster than a normal kart.
She growled while her eyes turned red. "Okay, things are getting odd. How could they evolve?" A shiver went down her spine. "What if it is backward?
"The monsters today are going back to what they were. As in that old book. If so, what in hell is causing it?"
Is that part of the reason why she was born? Because monsters are getting tougher, no, it has to be more than that. Like a menace is returning.
Her dreams did say a thing that needed to be taken care of.
Maybe it could even be the thing that the former goddess fought, but then. How is it still around? Or is it a new threat showing its influence?
Blanc clenched her teeth. Things might take a turn for the worse. Could the rulers know about this?
As the signs pointed to them hunting goddess. If so, why?
"I'm getting pissed off," Blanc growled, gripping the wheel hard. "Not only do I have to worry about being hunted. I have monsters getting stronger! If there is some way of meeting fate, I'm kicking its ass."
Blanc drove home. Maybe even start looking into a different place. Given the stakes are getting higher.
She needs a backup place to live or just move now. Things could have been stirred with that black-haired woman. She gasped, feeling a call.
Asking her to free it, she gulped.
"I can't," Blanc muttered. "If I do it. It could harm people. Please, can't we find another way? One that won't…"
Even if it was gone, the thing left her with a bad feeling. She cursed, knowing what it is asking to do.
Not only if she did it. How could she live up to that responsibility?
That weighed on her mind. Being a ruler, caring for the people under her. How would she even start?
Blanc's eyes went back to normal. Only now, a pulse is given off. Sending waves that started a change.
At a room in K-city. A lone female was standing by a floating power icon, housed in this room.
She seemed of medium height with blue eyes. Her hair was in braids and was playing with one.
This room was large with consoles. Controls, regulars, and gauges. For this room housed the power source of K-city. The other cities have their version.
The share crystal, or a sharicte as it could be called.
This crystal could also power a goddess, being it was made by them. Given that faith is needed to keep it powering stuff.
The female's eyes looked at that the crystal. She clicked her tongue at seeing the share crystal change color.
At first, it was a pale yellow, then became a dark blue. As if something was fighting her control of it. It slowly went back to yellow.
Given she is a human, she couldn't control it. Only by special means, it was possible. Without a goddess to claim it.
Which is taking place. Not just in K-city, but others are facing this.
"It was about ten years since you did this," the female hissed, speaking to the crystal. "So you don't like humans controlling you? Or is it something else?"
That was possible, after all. Their benefactor did help them all those years ago. Giving insight into taming a sharicte. With enough power to keep things stable.
But a crack has appeared. One that could ruin things.
Goddesses have come back, despite all done to prevent that. It was as if this damn crystal is fighting her. Even if it was a piece from the previous goddess who ruled.
As it broke from her death. And even then, it took a lot to reform it. As only a goddess could do that. Not even their benefactor could do that, and she does have the means. But her hands are tied.
Thankfully, they all found a way to remake them. Each of the cities lost it. As they need that power.
Leaving one question, why has it made a goddess? One that shouldn't be walking around. Did it revive the last one? She can't say for sure but has a good idea who it is.
A blush came to her cheeks. "Maybe fate is being kind. This goddess is such a beauty. Red eyes as velvet, silky black hair. The right curves.
"I can't help but want to make her mine," she moaned, at the thought of having her.
It filled her with joy. With the two of them working together, nothing could stop them. The war to come and keeping this rule. It would be better to have a pleasant companion.
On a console are pictures of Noire. Having her information close by. For she is the top pick for being the goddess that was created by the share crystal.
After all, she did apply for living in K-city months ago. Only no one thought to dig deep, until now.
Now, it is only a matter of time to capture her. Find out if she's the goddess. If not, at least have a companion for a while.
The woman giggled, her eyes flashing yellow. "Oh yes, Noire. I would love to know you better. Hopefully, the others won't interfere. As they have some idea of where the other two are at. I just have be to quick enough."
With that said, the woman turned and walked off collecting Noire's information. Planning to capture her prize. Her forces should do it before Noire gets too strong.
And then, her giggles almost sounded unhinged at thought of having Noire in her arms. Talking sweet things with each other, all of it would be perfect.
That brought so much joy to her.
A/N Read and review.
