Ajax ran as fast as he could to catch Enid before she left, but it was no use.
Of course it was no use, he'd been three hours late, he hadn't expected her to wait so long no matter how much she may have liked him. It was just... On the off chance that she was still there he didn't want her to wait even a second longer than she had to. He'd have apologized profusely and told her the truth no matter how embarrassing it was.
Instead, because Enid had already left, he went back to his dorm with his head hung low. He berated himself half the way back. He really should have gotten rid of that mirror regardless of his roommate's complaints.
It took him a while to fall asleep, but eventually it came for him and his hair stopped stirring.
Ajax smelled something, not with his nose but with his hair. It smelled dangerous and almost woke him from his sleep. Then something soft settled on his face and he drifted off again.
Ajax was woken by a bucket of water, ice cold with some cubes still frozen in it for good measure.
He jolted, and would have stood up if it weren't for the ropes tying him to the chair. Half naked, in only boxers and a tank top. As if the ice cold water and light draft wasn't enough.
When he turned to examine his surroundings all he saw were wooden walls and jars filled with something, it was hard to tell with the dim light shining through the gaps in the walls. He was wearing his beanie, he noticed, and considered freeing the snakes; but that would just buy him some time to think and freeze, it wouldn't free him from the ropes.
"Don't even bother," a cold voice said as heavy steps fell on the old wooden floor, "I wouldn't be able to see them anyways."
Wednesday stepped into his field of view, a blindfold on full display as she stepped through a moonbeam.
"Wednesday? Wh- what are you doing?"
"I think you'll find that I'm the one who'll ask the questions here." She picked something up from a table, he couldn't tell what. "Let's start with something simple. Where were you earlier tonight, when the monster attacked me?"
"I- I don't know. How am I supposed to know when you were attacked?"
"Fair. Why don't we start at eight and move through the evening from there?"
He swallowed thickly. Everyone knew Wednesday was obsessed with that monster, but he hadn't heard of her doing anything like that before. That must mean she was sure he was behind it, and he did not want to know what being Wednesday Addams' prime suspect was like.
"I- I think I was in the dining hall, finishing up dinner. After that I went to my room to get ready for a date. Picked an outfit, prepared flowers, and got into the shower. When I left the shower, must have been around half nine, I accidentally looked in the mirror and turned to stone.
"I usually have a towel over it but I guess it must have slipped since it was under the mirror when it finally wore off.
"After that I rushed out to the greenhouse, I was supposed to meet my date behind it, but she was already gone so I went back to my room and went straight to bed."
"And you did nothing else?"
"I swear to god."
"Can your roommate confirm your story?"
"He saw me running out of the bathroom but I don't think he saw me in there."
"That'll have to do." Wednesday turned around, heading for the door.
"Are you going to untie me? Or at least give me a towel?"
"I'll confirm with your roommate first. Even if your story's true, you still made Enid cry so you deserve this much at least."
"This is about Enid?" He knew they were roommates, and that Enid seemed to like Wednesday enough, but he hadn't gotten the impression that the feeling was mutual until that moment.
"Yes. I suggest you apologize as soon as you get a chance." She opened the door. "And not a word about our meeting, not to Enid or anybody else, understand?"
He nodded before remembering her blindfold. "Y- yeah. You're just looking out for your friend, in your own psychotic way. I understand."
And he did understand. He understood that he never wanted to cross Wednesday again. And he pitied any boy that broke Enid's heart for any reason other than by complete accident.
