That night, Donna and Harvey went to bed earlier than usual, laying together and watching a sitcom on Netflix until Donna felt tired.
'How are you feeling about going back to the firm tomorrow?' Harvey asked, stealing a look at Donna.
She pursed her lips, the only indication she gave that she had heard him. She continued watching the show for so long that he wondered if she had heard him, but she eventually turned to face him.
'Ok. I mean, I can't hide up here forever, can I? Besides, it's busy so it's not like anything will happen in broad daylight in a building full of lawyers,' she joked, trying to hide the darkness in her eyes. In reality, the thought of leaving Harvey's condo scared her, but she knew she had to go back to work at some point. And besides, the police were looking for Huntley day and night. She would be perfectly safe.
'You'll be outside my office the entire time too, and the one advantage of having glass everywhere is that I can see you and make sure you're ok.' He squeezed Donna's hand, smiling softly and looking her in the eye to reassure her. His heart ached thinking how scared she must be, knowing that a murder was looking to exact his revenge on her.
Donna yawned, which Harvey took as his cue to turn the TV off and go to bed. He turned the light off and closed their bedroom door, shutting out the rest of the world as he climbed back into bed and put his arm around his girlfriend. It took her a remarkably short time to fall asleep, Harvey guessing it could only have been a few minutes before her breathing slowed and her body fully relaxed. He lay looking at her, the way the sliver of moonlight penetrating the bedroom set her hair alight, shades of amber and red and gold dancing against the white pillowcase and her pale skin. A deep protective instinct stirred inside him and he knew he would do anything for her. He wished he could do more to help her, wished he could go out and find Huntley himself and kill him for what he was putting Donna through. But he couldn't, so he settled for keeping watch over her while she slept, keeping her safe from harm.
…
Donna stirred as the alarm went off, feeling well-rested after their early night the previous night. She pushed down the feeling of anxiety in her stomach and turned to see Harvey laid facing her, one hand at her side as though he was guarding her. Smiling, she gently kissed his forehead to wake him up. His puzzled expression and groan as he realised what time it was made her laugh and she welcomed the sense of normality it brought. This was how most of their mornings began whenever she spent the night, her dragging Harvey out of bed to a point that she wondered how on earth he made it to work when she wasn't there.
'Wake up, sleepyhead,' she murmured in his ear, playfully kissing his neck just below his ear. Thinking he was still half asleep, she was taken by surprise when he rolled over with her so that he was on top of her, gently tickling her until tears of laughter rolled down her cheeks.
'Oh my god, Harvey! Stop it,' she shrieked.
In one swift movement, he kissed her forehead and climbed off the bed, throwing a robe around himself and passing Donna her towel off the back of the door. They resumed their typical morning routine, Donna showering while Harvey made coffee and watched the morning news. When she had finished washing her hair, they swapped places.
Emerging from the bathroom still slightly damp, Harvey stopped in his tracks as he saw Donna. It wasn't that she looked bad without her hair and makeup done, in fact he secretly thought she was more beautiful without all the finery, but there was something about the way she looked that left him speechless. Her hair was curled and bounced around her shoulders, curving over her shoulders and down her back. She'd applied heavier makeup than she normally did in an effort to conceal the marks on her face and neck, but she still looked effortlessly breathtaking.
'I need to go home and grab something to wear. I wore the clothes I had here yesterday to go to the police station,' she explained, gesturing to Harvey's shirt and some leggings she was wearing.
Despite the mis-matched outfit, he struggled to say anything other than 'ok' before quickly getting dressed in a clean suit. The couple finished their coffee and set the glasses in the sink before swiftly leaving the condo, Harvey double-checking the door was locked before they left.
…
Donna studied her wardrobe, trying to decide what to wear and ignoring the internal conflict between a need to pick the perfect outfit to hide everything but also to make her look good enough that nobody questioned whether she was ok. She needed a confidence outfit, power-dressing they called it, she thought. Eventually, her eyes settled on a black cape-sleeve dress and she decided it would do. She tied a belt around her waist, cinching the fabric in, though after a few days of surviving off of coffee and little else she didn't really need to. She strode out of the bedroom in a matching pair of stilettos with the silver bracelet on her wrist that Harvey had bought her for her birthday. Her lips curled in a smile as she saw how Harvey did a double take when he saw her, satisfying her concerns that she didn't look as put-together as she usually did.
'I was going for confident, business-like, I-haven't-recently-survived-a-kidnapping,' she joked, 'what do you think?'
Harvey crossed the room wordlessly and kissed her deeply, one hand in her hair and the other around her waist. He pulled away, smiling at the way her eyes gleamed. Despite having been with her for months, and having known her for years, he still couldn't believe how lucky he was that Donna was his girlfriend, that she loved him. She returned his smile and they left the apartment with a few suitcases filled with things she would need while staying with Harvey.
…
Ray drove the pair to the firm as quickly as he could in the traffic, apologising to Harvey for their unpunctuality. However, Harvey's attention wasn't on Ray, but on Donna, who he noticed was wringing her hands as they drove up to the alley where Steven's men had been. Without saying anything, he took her hand and caressed it with his thumb in small circles, taking her mind off that evening and grounding her in the present. All-too-well he understood the feeling of being caught up in your mind, meaning he knew what to do to try and help her. Donna turned and smiled weakly at him, squeezing his hand in silent thanks.
Finally, the traffic dissipated and they arrived at Pearson Specter. Harvey stepped out of the car first, Donna a beat behind him as they stood by the glass doors together. Her hand in his, they stepped into the building and into an elevator. Harvey watched in awe as she appeared to reconstruct herself, taking a deep breath and plastering a smile on her face. She pushed her shoulders down and her chest out slightly, her chin tilted up and radiating confidence. She let go of Harvey's hand, which quickly took its place in the small of her back as they stepped out of the elevator on their floor. With her heels clicking against the marble floor and Harvey's hand at her back, Donna smirked as she took power-dressing to a whole new level.
