Donna sat at her desk, comforted by the familiarity of the way her belongings were laid out neatly and precisely. She tucked her handbag under the desk and logged into her computer. Because both she and Harvey had been off the previous day there was a backlog of emails to read and calls to return, so Donna busied herself with those small tasks for most of the morning. On the whole, people left them both to it and she assumed Jessica hadn't said anything to anybody in the firm because apart from a few polite smiles and nods, nobody said a word to them. In the past, it hadn't been unusual for Donna and Harvey to take an impromptu day off, typically when Harvey was apologising to her with his credit card and a shopping day. However they had long since stopped doing those after Jessica had made it clear that they had to give advance warning for holidays.
Every hour or so, if he wasn't on a call, Harvey checked on Donna via their intercom. Without her realising, he had spent a large portion of his day so far studying her, noticing how she was jiggling her leg and playing with her hair more than she normally did. Though she told him she was absolutely fine, he could see how stressed she was despite her efforts to push the fears and anxieties away. By the time it was lunchtime, he called her into his office and told her he would order some food for them and that they should both take their lunch hour, for a change. Donna smiled, readily agreeing because she could do with the break. Even though she knew it was irrational, she found herself looking up from her computer every minute or so, scanning the corridors for Stephen or anybody else that didn't belong and she thought lunch with Harvey would take her mind off it.
They ordered from her favourite place, choosing two of whatever Donna recommended because Harvey was clueless. For the most part, he preferred something more filling and usually just picked up a bagel and coffee from outside, but he wanted to do something nice for her and so he found himself eating a Buddha bowl, whatever the hell that was. He picked doubtfully at some kale and potato and found it tasted surprisingly good. Though he wasn't too sure about the chickpeas, Harvey tucked into his salad and finished before Donna.
She saw how he watched her eat which made her feel slightly uncomfortable, but she knew he just wanted to make sure she was eating enough. The thought brought a smile to her face, as well as the delicious food. With a cheeky look on her face, she swiped a few of his chickpeas as she could tell he wasn't keen. Besides, they were her favourites so she knew he wouldn't mind.
'Enjoy that, did you?' she smirked, picking up the empty containers and disposing of them. Usually, he turned his nose up at her 'rabbit food', so she was both surprised and pleased to see him enjoying something healthy for a change. Not that it mattered to her what he ate, because he was perfectly in shape, but she appreciated it was something else they could enjoy together.
Harvey smirked back, knowing exactly what was going through her head. It was a cliche he'd often dismissed, but his girlfriend really was always right.
'What time do you want to go home tonight?' he asked casually enough, taking a swig of water but keeping his eyes fixed on hers.
'Home?' she asked. 'Do you mean back to yours?'
Harvey paused for a minute. 'Well, you practically live at mine anyway and now most of your stuff will be there. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is, I'd like it if we both called the same place home and if you'd move in with me, Donna. I love you, and I have done for years. For some people this might be too quick, but I already know that I'm going to spend the rest of my life doing whatever I can to make you happy. I want to be the man you say goodnight to and wake up with in the morning. I want to be there when you've had a bad day at work and I want to cook you dinner in the evenings. I love you, Donna Paulsen, so will you move in with me?'
He held his breath, worried it was too much too soon, especially given the events of the previous days.
A small smile spread across Donna's face, reaching her eyes and making them gleam with delight. She nodded,
'I'd love to, Harvey.'
They both stood up and Harvey walked around the desk to where she stood, taking her in his arms and kissing her deeply. He tried to put a thousand unsaid words into that kiss, conscious that he still wasn't always able to express his thoughts exactly how he wanted to, despite the progress he'd made recently.
'Harvey, what if everyone sees?' Donna whispered.
'I don't care,' he replied, kissing her again.
She pulled away again. 'That's not what you said when we first got together,' she said doubtfully.
They'd both agreed that, after the Huntley and Darby fiasco and the firm still trying to find its feet, they'd keep their relationship secret until things were better. Even though Donna wasn't happy with it, she understood and so she had agreed to Harvey's proposition.
Harvey paused and stood straighter. He made his way to the office door and opened it, shouting into the corridor: 'Donna Paulsen is my girlfriend and she's just agreed to move in with me!'
The people he hadn't completely alienated at the firm clapped and cheered, which Harvey joined in with, turning to a shocked Donna, beaming. The celebratory mood was catching and soon she made her way over to him, allowing him to wrap an arm around her waist and proudly show her off to his friends.
…
'Harvey?' Donna called to him from her desk later that evening. 'Harvey, I've got Joy McAfferty on the phone. She sounds upset.'
She tried not to sound too dejected. It was late and they hadn't eaten yet; all she wanted to do was go home and go to bed.
'Thanks, Don.'
She closed her computer down, feeling exhausted after a long day and deciding she'd done enough. There wasn't much left to do and she reasoned that it would be easy to finish in the morning. She picked up her phone, checking to see if anyone had called her with an update about Stephen. When she saw that they hadn't, she scrolled through the news headlines to see if there was anything out of the ordinary. Unfortunately, in New York there were often multiple murders in the news and so even if Huntley had been involved, she had no way of telling.
Harvey came out of his office and Donna stood up, hoping their day was done.
'Donna, I'm so sorry. Joy is having a crisis and she needs me to sort it now. I've got to go over there, but it won't be long at all. You can come and stay in the car with Ray, he won't mind.'
Harvey took her hand, squeezing it apologetically.
'No, it's fine. I'm starving anyway and I've got a couple other things I can do. I'll stay here and grab some food until you come back.'
She could tell he looked uncomfortable.
'Don-'
'Harvey, it's fine. The firm isn't empty, Jessica's in her office and there's security at the door anyway. I'll be fine.' She kissed his cheek reassuringly, hoping he would leave because she really wanted to go home.
'Ok, fine,' he conceded, still visibly unhappy with the situation but he accepted that the risk was small. 'Why don't you work in my office? Just push the mess aside and then you're out of the way a bit more. Just in case.'
She smiled, looking forward to taking her heels off and relaxing on his couch with a glass of scotch. He kissed her cheek and promised to be back as soon as he could before disappearing in an elevator and calling Ray to pick him up.
