It's a lot quieter without Webber.
Wendy sits by the camp's fire pit, everything around her busy as ever. Things need to be done, almost everybody has a job to fulfill. Even Abigail is busy haunting the fire pit so it stays bright.
But Wendy sits against a tree stump, watching the fire burn. Despite the evening sun, Wendy can't bring herself to do anything but sit. Everything is so much quieter without Webber.
In a haze of moving people, Wendy exists like a statue, lost in time. With almost no incentive to work, she can just exist. And existence is cruel.
The fire grows again, Abigail's efforts bringing some comfort to Wendy. Even in her darkest hour, she remains.
"Thank you Abigail."
The ghostly sister floats to Wendy, giving her the best hug she can. They embrace each other, clinging onto whatever normalcy still exists.
"OoOoOOoo?"
Abigail pulls back from the hug, her ghostly wails quieter than usual.
"I'm fine Abigail, I promise."
"oOoOOoo…"
Abigail glances to the tent Webber resides in. Something in Wendy's chest tightens.
"He's going to be fine. We just… need to wait."
"OoOoo?"
"… I don't know."
Wendy glances to the floor, pulling on the hem of her dress. The chances of Webber getting hurt during his molting process are so low, worrying about it is childish. Even the other survivors have said it, Webber will be fine. Worse case scenario, Wilson can make a telltale heart.
Wendy keeps staring at the fire. Death isn't as simple as all the other survivors say it is. Sometimes she thinks they lie to themselves, that death haunts them like the night haunts the day. But she can never know. All she can do is watch the fire pit burn. It consumes her attention, like a moth to a flame.
Maybe Willow knows something she doesn't. Watching the flame is hypnotizing, almost comforting. Maybe watching the world burn wouldn't be so bad. When death permeates every corner of the world, why reject it? Maybe it's time she embraces death once more…
Wendy shuts her eyes, squeezing her hands tightly. In the absence of light, there is darkness. And in the absence of joy, there is white noise.
When Wendy opens her eyes, Abigail is gone.
Maybe she was wrong…
"OooOoo!"
Before Wendy can think further, something puts pressure on her head. As she blinks in confusion, a face appears before her.
Upside down.
With a giant smile on their face.
"Did ya miss us?"
Wendy goes to speak but Webber falls forward, off her head and onto the ground before her, landing dangerous close to the fire pit. Wendy doesn't hesitate to grab Webber by his head and yank him away from the fire.
Resting his head on her lap, Wendy and Webber look at each other, Webber's head still upside down; he's a goofball through and through. Wendy speaks, happiness lacing her words.
"Yes Webber, I missed you. Abigail missed you too."
On cue, Abigail floats to the duo, looking much more energetic than before.
"We know! She came to see us, we were eating but she reminded us what's really important…"
Webber's eyes soften, it dawns on Wendy that his pupils are bigger than normal.
"You!"
"Oh, shush!"
Wendy smiles brightly, putting her head against Webber's head. They nuzzle foreheads together, closing eyes and smiling with warm sensations throughout. Wendy savors her smile; she wishes it didn't hide so often.
Pulling back, Wendy goes to pet Webber's head. The spider boy remains still, enjoying his upside down view of the world; everything feels right when they're together anyway.
As Wendy rubs Webber's head, she tilts her head.
"Feels weird, right?"
Webber's excitement is almost toxic, Wendy smiles faintly as she keeps feeling the new skin.
"Yeah…" His skin is tough, yet it has some fur. "You feel like a peach."
"We love peaches!"
"Yeah… me too."
Wendy leans down to rub her forehead against Webber's, enjoying the fuzzy feeling. His weird face arms lightly scratch at her head, expressing a desire to feel her soft hair.
Wendy would make a comment about Webber ruining her hair, but her hair is never a topic of concern; he always fixes things Wendy never really thinks about.
As the night draws near, the two are content with staying close, undisturbed by anything else. For Wendy, she has nothing to complain about.
Life is a lot nicer when Webber is here.
