Chapter 3: Truce?

"Hey, it's Bella again. So Jim and I went to our old company to work on a project, and met Ed and Ellie again. And to our surprise they were married, and Ellie was heavily pregnant. It was awkward at first, but Jim and I decided to just stick to our work. But then when we were leaving one day, Ed and Ellie invited us to dinner."

Jim and I were still a little in shock.

"We can understand if you say no, but we really want to talk you in private." said Ed.

I was surprised at hearing this. I glanced over at Jim, who looked skeptical.

"Please." begged Ellie.

Jim was about to answer, when I quickly spoke.

"Okay, we'll go." I said.

Ed and Ellie looked happy to hear that, and told us to come to the restaurant around 6, and then they left. Jim looked at me surprised.

"What are you doing?" he asked me in disbelief.

"Look Jim, I know you don't trust Ed and Ellie, but we should hear them out. After all hearing them out is how I found you."

Jim thought about it for a minute, but then agreed, but only for me.

So we dressed up in some nice clothes, and went to the restaurant. We found Ed and Ellie waiting for us at the entrance. They greeted us, and we all went inside. Ed got us a nice table, and I noticed how he pulled Ellie's chair out for her, and helped her sit down.

Jim did the same for me, and at first it was a little awkward, as we just stared at each other. Luckily the waiter came, and took our drink orders. After he left, Ed spoke up.

"Listen, I know you both are skeptical of us after what we did. But while you're here we wanted to apologize again."

"We recently learned that it was John who took those pictures of us and showed them to Ed's parents." Elli informed.

"And you're going to fire my brother now?" Jim asked sharply.

I quickly calmed him down. Ed and Ellie explained that when they confronted John about what he did, he told them that someone had to stop them because they were ruining too many lives.

"That made us realize what monsters we were acting like."

Ed turned to me.

"Bella, I'm really sorry about how I treated you. I was cruel, cold, unfair, and selfish. I guess I was so caught up in my new feelings for Ellie, I didn't care about anything else."

"And it's just as much my fault too." added Ellie.

"It was my idea to use your dad's illness against you."

Then Ed turned to Jim.

"And Jim, I was a really bad friend to you. I didn't think about your feelings, and I basically stole Bella from you."

Jim and I were still a little stunned at this sincere apology. I didn't know Ed and Ellie felt that bad about what they had done.

"So while you're here we want to make it up to you, both of you." Ellie piped up.

Ed then pulled out two pairs of keys.

"This is the key to one of our spare houses. And this is the key to one of our nice cars. They're both yours while you're here."

After the waiter came and brought us our drinks, we told him we needed a minute before we ordered. Jim then spoke up.

"Ed, I'm not sure if I can truly forgive you or not for what you did. But I'll think about it."

"And I will too."

Ed and Ellie smiled at hearing that, and we ordered our dinner. I ordered some spaghetti, Jim got some fish, Ed had a salad, and Ellie ordered some chicken and a pork chop. I chuckled, knowing that would be me in a few months.

When we finished dinner, Jim and I went back to the hotel. Then we started talking about Ed and Ellie.

"It sorta sounds like they're trying to bribe us to get our forgiveness." Jim told me.

"That may be. But staying in a real house would be better than staying in a hotel for five months."

Jim agreed to that. So we called Ed and Ellie. And while we told them we weren't ready to truly forgive them we would at least let them try. They were happy to hear that, and told us we'd get the keys at work tomorrow.

So that morning, we check out of the hotel,

The next day at work, we met up with Ed and Ellie, and they gave us the keys. At lunch, we sat with John and told him what Ed and Ellie were doing for us.

"It sounds like they're trying to kiss up to you guys." he said.

I admitted that they were, but it was just because they felt bad.

"Well just be sure to be on your toes. You know how sneaky those two can be." John warned.

Though I didn't like how John was comparing Ed and Ellie to dangerous gang members, I understood why he felt the way he did.

After we finished our work day, we found the car the car keys went to. And to our surprise, it was a bright red sports car. Jim opened the car door for me, and I got in. As Jim drove away from the building, I put the directions for the house into my phone GPS.

We drove for a while, until we finally reached the our destination. You can mention our shock when we pulled up. We were expecting a simple house, but instead we were in front of a three story mansion.

Upon entering, we realized the inside was just as fancy as the outside. On the table by the front door, was a gift basket filled with wine, perfume, cologne, some fancy soaps, and air fresheners. There was also a note.

I picked it up, and read it.

"Dear Bella and Jim, welcome to our spare home. Everything's already been taken care of, we've had the pantry, and fridge stocked today, and there are fresh towels, pillows, blankets, and other necessities in the bedrooms." From Ed and Ellie."

It was true, the pantry and cupboards were filled with food, plates, cups, and utensils, and the fridge was filled with fresh food. We managed to find a bedroom, and started to settle in. We had a nice dinner, and then we went to sleep.

The next month came, and living in the house was definitely more comfortable than being in the hotel. Then it was time for me to meet my new doctor. We drove into the city, and found the building where I'd be having my appointments for the next four months.

It was a pretty nice clinic, with many other expectant mothers with their husbands and kids with them. After checking in, we took and seat and waited our turn. As we did, we heard some else come in, and couldn't believe our eyes.
