Chapter 4: Something in Common
"Hey guys, it's Bella again. In the last part, Jim and I decided to give Ed and Ellie the benefit of the doubt. We accepted the car and house they were lending us, while we were staying in the city. Then it was time for me to have my first doctor's appointment with Dr. Landon. But while we were waiting to be called we got another surprise."
Jim and I were shocked when we saw Ed and Ellie come through the door. And in turn, they were surprised to see us.
"Ed, Ellie, what are you guys doing here?" I asked.
"We came for my doctor's appointment." Ellie told us.
So both Ellie's and my doctors worked in the same building? Man this was a small world. Then the door opened, a nurse called us.
"Bella and Jim, Dr. Landon will see you now."
When Ed and Ellie heard that, they were surprised.
"You're seeing Dr. Landon? That's Ellie's doctor." Ed told us.
As the nurse took us back, I couldn't stop thinking about all the coincidences. First we get assigned to work with Ed and Ellie, then they're married and pregnant, and now we're seeing the same doctor?
This was too crazy.
We waited for a little while longer in the examination room, and then a woman wearing a white lab coat came in.
"Hi, you must be Bella and Jim. I'm Dr. Landon. Dr. Jones sent over all your paperwork."
We greeted her back, and she started examining me. She was a pretty nice woman, and a good doctor. When she finished, she went over to wash her hands, when Jim spoke up.
"Hey, Dr. Landon, you know Ed and Ellie?"
"Well I can't disclose that." Dr. Landon told.
"Well we know them. And it's a real coincidence." I added.
"Life is full of coincidences." Dr. Landon told us smiling.
When we left, Ed and Ellie looked at us.
"Guys wait. Bella you're pregnant?" asked Ed.
"Yes, we are." I told him.
They were completely shocked. We then left the clinic, and went back to the house.
While I was working the next day, I got a text from Ellie. She wanted to talk, and asked if we could have lunch together. I texted back okay, and got back to my work. When it came time for lunch, I told Jim that I'd be having mine with Ellie.
I met her in a cafe, where she was alone.
"Over here, Bella." she called.
"Hi, Ellie." I told her quietly.
I sat down across from her, and the waiter took our order. At first we were quiet, but then I spoke up.
"So what is it Ellie?"
"I was hoping we could have a chance to talk." she replied.
I was a little concerned, the last time she wanted to have a talk like this, it was part of a plan to get me back with Ed.
"I know I've apologized for a lot of things, but I've never apologized to you for stealing Ed from you."
I was a little surprised to hear that.
"Well I guess it did hurt me. But truth be told, Ed's not for me. And you two are more meant for each other."
"Well...like it or not, we're stuck together for five months, we're both pregnant, and we're even sharing the same doctor. So I was hoping we could try and start over." Ellie told me.
I thought for a little bit. I guess I should've expected something like this, but it was still shocking to hear.
"Well..."
I didn't have time to answer, when our food was brought to us.
After we finished, I spoke up.
"Listen Ellie, I'm willing to give you and Ed a chance. But I don't think I'm ready to fully trust you guys yet."
Ellie looked a little disappointed, but she nodded.
"I understand. I can't say I wouldn't be the same way."
Soon our lunch break was over, and it was time to get back to work. As I got up from the table, I noticed Ellie was having a hard time getting herself up with her large belly.
"Here let me help you."
I helped Ellie get to her feet, and then we left the cafe.
That evening, I told Jim about my lunch with Ellie.
"Do you think we're being too harsh with Ed and Ellie?" I asked.
"Well...maybe. I mean Ed tried to talk to me, but I didn't really want to listen."
"Well they're being friendly towards us, we should at least try and accept their apologies rather than just take their stuff."
We agreed. And from then on, we were more friendly towards Ed and Ellie. We greeted them in the morning, said goodbye when they were leaving, and I smiled at them sometimes. The project was going smoothly, and that was good for both our companies.
When month three came around, my nausea was starting to go away, which I was very thankful for. When Jim and I went to my next appointment, and not surprisingly Ed and Ellie were there too.
"You know, Dr. Landon's a great doctor." Ellie told me.
"She is?" I asked.
"I mean my other doctor recommended her."
"And she was right to. She's really nice, funny, and a good doctor."
The door opened, and the nurse called Ed and Ellie. Ed tenderly helped Ellie get to her feet, and they followed the nurse back. After a while, the nurse brought them back out.
"Bella."
Jim and I then followed her back.
In the examination room, I lied down on the examination table, as Dr. Landon was getting ready to do an ultrasound.
"So how're you feeling, Bella?" she asked.
"I'm been feeling pretty good." I answered.
She asked me to pull up my shirt, and as I did, I noticed that my belly was started to stick out a little. Dr. Landon then squirted some gel on my stomach, turned on the screen monitor, and waved the medical wand over my belly.
She faced the monitor, and made sure everything was okay.
"Everything's looking good and normal. Would you like to hear the baby's heart?"
Jim and I answered eagerly. And with a special stethoscope, we heard our baby's heart. And it was the most beautiful sound we ever heard.
