The Doctor's In

I paced back and forth around my small apartment. "Kendall just called me." My thoughts ran through my head like a bullet train. "He hasn't spoken to me in years and the first time he calls, he's being chased down by… something… and warning me about the danger of not only my life, but Logan and Carlos's lives as well. I bet he called me because I'm now a P.I, but why didn't he call up Kaite? Or Mrs. Knight? Why was I his first, and probably only, phone call?"

The moon was shining through my 3 story apartment building, making the room glow. But even though the view of L.A is pretty, I couldn't shake off the feeling my old bandmates are in trouble. Someone is out to get them, and possibly me as well.

Who could do this? I didn't think we had any enemies, at least public ones. From what I've gathered, we were pop darlings. We rarely got into any scandals, and our music was pretty family friendly. We also got along well with everyone we collabed and met up with.

These thoughts were racking my brain. I usually can come to conclusions pretty quickly, but this has me stumped. I'm not sure if it's just the personal connection, but I don't even know where to start. Did Kendall make an enemy and now is targeting him? If so, why did he mention the whole band's in trouble? Is it some kind of sick prank he's playing on me? It isn't even the Day of Pranks!

Wow, I can't believe I remembered when the Day of Pranks was.

I stared out the window once again, wondering what I was going to do. As I looked outside, some construction workers were hard at work replacing a billboard. I usually would think nothing of it, they would do things like this all the time. But once I read the billboard they were actually putting up.

The billboard was an ad for a hospital in L.A, trying to get more people to go there. Some little girl was showing a toothy smile holding a little bear. It was honestly adorable, but she wasn't the one I was focusing on…. It was the doctor in the ad.

"L.A General Hospital…. Where your care is always treated with a smile!"

The caption was right next to a very familiar face. Logan Mitchall was right smack dab in the middle, putting his arm around the little girl flashing a smile. I always knew he would become a doctor, but I never expected to see him on a billboard right outside my apartment.

I decided the first place to start would be Logan, since he and Kendall were close. If Kendall was in any sort of danger, Logan would be one of the first to know. I called the number on the billboard, scheduled an appointment, and waited until morning. I just hope he shows up tomorrow.

You know, when getting ready to visit Logan this morning, I think I found a medical excuse I could use. I ran out of contacts. Logan knows I'm legally blind without them, so I don't think he'll be that surprised seeing me in glasses. I understand he can't prescribe me contact lenses, but at least I can try.

I arrived at the hospital casually. There were lots of patients around, waiting to see Dr. Logan Mitchall. I checked in and waited right next to another guy. He was all banged up, covered in scratches, and dried blood stained his side of his head.

"What happened to you?" I happen to say out loud. The guy looked at me strangely.

"I was in a fight." He answered, slurring his words. "You should see the other guy."

The dude was fairly tall, had some muscle, and could take a person down in a fight.

"Did you win?" I asked.

"What are you a cop?" he answered.

Technically yes, but if I said that he probably would shut up.

"No," I lied. "I'm not. Just a guy who needs a checkup. Who exactly were you fighting?"

The guy shifted a little. "Some lanky guy. He was trying to do something and I had to put a stop to it."

Since this case was stuck on my brain, I could only think of Kendall. He was a tall, lanky guy, but I'm sure it wasn't him. Fights happen all the time in L.A, so it could have been any lanky guy. But I did keep this tibet in the back of my mind, just in case.

"So," I started but stopped since while I was thinking to myself, the guy vanished.

"James." The nurse said. I got up and made my way over to the door. I patiently waited for Logan to walk through that door. Minutes felt like hours. At least the office room was nice to look at.

"Alright, Mr." I hear a voice pop in. He turns towards me and just stops. "James?"

"Hey buddy." I said. "Long time no see."

He locked the door behind him and sat down. "What are you doing here?"

"Can't I see my favorite doctor to help me get contact lenses?"

He stared daggers at me. "Not funny dude. Why are you actually here?"

I pull out my card "James Diamond, Private Investigator. I got a warning for yo ya man. Last night, I got a call from Kendall and he was in danger."

That got his attention. "Kendall's in trouble?"

I shake my head. "I know it sounds weird and crazy, but he said that the band was in danger too. Since I haven't been in contact with him since we've split, I thought you would know something that I didn't. Have you been in contact with Kendall?"

Logan swivels in his chair. "Kendall and I are still friends, but I don't think he's gotten himself in trouble. Maybe it has something to do with us."

"That's what I'm trying to get at. Who would try to potentially kill Kendall and maybe us too? Do you think we angered someone back in the past?"

Logan got up and started pacing around the office room. "Our image was very clean, so I highly doubt it. If anyone would put us in danger, it would be Gustavo, even if it wasn't on purpose. Remember getting kidnapped by Hawk at our first actual concert?"

As he rambled on, an idea popped into my brain.

"Logan, you're a genius!" I yelled.

He looked at me stupidly. "Yeah… thanks. How am I a genius again?"

I start to theorize. "Who would have the capabilities to not only get rid of a major money making band, but also have some kind of motive to do so? Hawk would!"

"Isn't he still in jail?" Logan questions.

"Yes, but that doesn't mean he's not loaded! He has those connections, especially in jail."

Logan ponders quietly. "I guess you have a point."

"So then will you come help me?" I blurt out.

"I don't know, James." He starts. "I have a wife and kid now. Sticking my nose in things like this are going to put them in danger and that's the last thing I want. I want to help you find Kendall, I really do. But I just can't take that risk."

I understood what he was getting at. He and Camille are happy together, and their daughter is adorable. If I had a wife and kid, I probably would think the same thing.

"Alright," I sigh. "You can stay here and do your job. But please keep in contact with me if anything happens. We might have already lost Kendall, I don't want to lose you and Carlos too."

"Ok. If you want to check up on Carlos, you'll find him at the police station. He's a cop now."

"He always says he wants to be a superhero. I guess this is the closest he's gonna get. Thanks for the advice man. I'll call you later with more information."

"Anytime man," I hear his voice trail off. "Anytime"

As I walked out of the hospital, I had a feeling of comfort inside me. I was thinking that Logan would go off on me for what I did, but surprisingly he was chill. But even though we are somewhat on good terms, I got a feeling he's still mad at me. I mean…. I would be too if I was him.

But I shake that off and catch a taxi. I make my way to the local prison to ask a certain bird brain if he knew anything about Kendall.

And hopefully he does so I have more of a chance to find him alive.
