I sat in front of the school with another girl digging through her bag. The Vice Principal had gone inside to see to something, leaving us outside. I glanced at her as her phone rang and tried not to eavesdrop on her conversation.

"Mom, three calls on my first day is a little overdoing it," the girl informed her mother. "Everything except a pen. Oh, my God, I didn't actually forget a pen." I nudged her as the VP was walking back to us and she made the call short. "Okay, okay. I gotta go. Love you."

"Sorry to keep you both waiting," he told us and she stopped digging in her bag and stood next to me. "So you were sayin San Francisco isn't where you grew up?"

"No, but we lived there for more than a year, which is unusual in my family," the girl explained to him.

"Well, hopefully Beacon Hills will be your last stop for a while. And you?"

"After the fire, I lived with my brother and sister. Now it's just me and my brother," I told him and he gave me the typical pity look.

"Once again, I'm so sorry for your loss Miss Hale."

"Thanks." We walked into a classroom and the VP introduced us.

"Class, these are our new students, Allison Argent and Zoey Hale. Please do your best to make them feel welcome." He left the room and Allison and I went to the only two empty seats available. I sat in front of a kid with a buzz cut only glancing back at the Argent as she thanked the boy in front of her as he handed her a pen. That must be who Derek and I saw last night. I took a deep breath and sighed.

"We'll begin with Kafka's Metamorphosis on page 133." I pulled out my book and turned to the correct page shaking my head. Metamorphosis, huh? They had no idea.

When the bell rang I left the room after the bitten wolf and followed him to his locker, which was not to far away from mine as well. I put away my things while keeping an eye on him as he watched Allison. Great, teenage hormones on top of new wolf instincts. This was going to be disasterous. I followed Allison and a redhead to the Lacrose Field and sat in front of them.

"Hey, Zoey, right?" I turned and smiled at Allison.

"The one and only." I reached back and shook her hand. "Nice to actually meet you this time."

"I'm Lydia Martin," the redhead introduced and I shook her hand too.

"Nice to meet you. So, what do we know about the team?" I asked the pair.

"They are doing tryouts soon to see who's going to be on the team, but my boyfriend Jackson is the team captain," Lydia informed me as I watched the bitten wolf and his friend talk.

"Interesting." I commented scanning the field before going back to the bitten wolf. "Do you know the names of everyone on the field?"

"Only people who've been on the team." I nodded at Lydia's answer watching the coach toss something at the bitten wolf.

"Who is that?" Allison asked watching the bitten wolf stretch in the goal for a bit.

"Him? I'm not sure who he is," Lydia told her. "Why?"

"He's in my English class." Allison shrugged and I just smiled at her.

"And you have a tiny crush?" I asked as the coach blew the whistle. I held back a laughter as the boy held his ears the best he could. Looks like someone's been getting used to his new hearing abilities. One of the guys threw a ball at him and I cringed as he got hit in the face. Thank you for protective equipment. Everyone laughed at him.

"Hey, way to catch with your face McCall!" One of the boys called out and I now had a name for him. McCall stodd and and prepared to catch the next ball, and seemed surprised when he did so. He must not have been good at the sport before.

"He seems like he's good," Allison commented.

"Yeah, very good," Lydia agreed. Everyone cheered as he caught one of the balls thrown at him.

"That's my friend!" someone called out as Lydia jumped up cheering.

"Everyone seemed suprised he caught every shot," I told Derek at home after school as we walked through the woods making sure there was no trace of Laura's body.

"Must be his reflexes kicking in." We looked up at someone growling jokingly. Buzz cut noticed us first and hit his friend in the shoulder to get his attention.

"What are you doing here?" Derek asked moving towards the boys. "Huh? This is private property."

"Uh, sorry, man, we didn't know," buzz cut told us and I just smiled at him.

"Most don't." Derek gave me a look and I just raised my eyebrow at him.

"We were just looking for something, but..." Derek and McCall stared at each other. "Uh, forget it." Derek pulled out an inhaler from his pocket and tossed it to him before we turned and left them alone.

"Allright, come on I gotta get to work."

"Dude, that was Derek Hale. I knew Zoey's last name was familiar. You remember, right?" Buzz cut asked his friend. "He's only like a few years older than us."

"Remember what?"

"Their family. They all burned to death in a fire, like, 10 years ago."

"I wonder what they're doing back." McCall pondered with his friend before they both left the preserve.

The next day at school, I sat with Lydia and Allison watching the boys tryout for the Lacrose team with a close eye on McCall. Everyone jumped up when he scored and made the team. Everyone except buzz cut. I moved to his side and sat next to him.

"I take it your friend couldn't do that before," I said making the boy jump in shock at me next to him.

"He's been practiciing a lot this summer." I gave him a look and he stared at his friend.

"Hey, that party tonight. Wanna go with me?" I asked him and his stare moved to me. "I need someone to go with and you seem like a safe bet."

"So it's not that my witty charm pulled you in?" he asked me and I laughed at him.

"Keep making a girl laugh and that could be your answer." I got up and went back to the girls I was getting used to.

"Where do you live so I can pick you up?" he asked me and I just smiled at him.

"How about I just meet you there and we'll go in together?" I suggested. "Derek it a bit overprotective."

"Yeah, that sounds good. My name is Stiles, by the way."

"Good to know."

At the party, I smiled at Stiles as I pulled up on my motorcycle and he just stared at me.

"Hey," I greeted and he seemed to snap out of it.

"Hey. You ready to go inside?"

"Yeah." The party wasn't bad. We drank the punch and danced while I kept on eye on Stiles friend. While we danced I watched him keeping an eye on his friend too and I pulled his ear to my lips.

"I know you know," I whispered to him and he just stared at me shocked. I allowed my eyes to flash gold at him before laughing as he jumped away from me slightly. I pulled him close again and held on. "You don't have to be afraid of me. I've had years of practice keeping myself under control. Even during a full moon. Your friend on the other hand..." We both looked at McCall who was now running away from Allison towards us.

"Yo, Scott, you good?" Stiles asked him and the boy just left the room we were in.

"He needs to get somewhere safe. Now." Stiles followed his friend out and I watched from the window as they both drove off, but not before Derek gave Allison a ride back to her house. A short time later I heard a roar and that was when I chose to leave the party.

Monday after school was let out, I met Stiles at his jeep and smiled at him.

"What do you want?" he asked me and I just sighed.

"I just want to help your friend. He's going to need it beore the next full moon." I grabbed his hand and pulled out a pen and wrote my phone number on it. "For when you decide you two need help."
