Castlevania: Dark Night Prelude

Written by Mark Moore

Author's note: This fanfic is based on my script for a fan film based on the game Castlevania Legends that I had written back in 2012-2015, back when I had the lofty ambition of trying to bring Sonia Belmont's story to life. That didn't happen, but, in honor of the 25th anniversary of the game's release (in Japan), I'm novelizing it and sharing it with all of you. Enjoy.

Chapter 1: Death and Birth

1433

Transylvania, the land beyond the forest. It is not an easy place to live in. Most people here have a hard life. There is warfare and almost daily violence.

One man obtained the powers of the Devil to change this world into one of darkness - and to gain eternal life...

Not long ago, that man, who became the Demon King, used his supernatural powers and loyal followers of evil called forth from the Otherworld to spread darkness and despair across all of Europe.

Count Dracula. The people feared the name of the Demon King, yet they could do nothing but voice their worries of a Dark Age the likes of which have never been seen.

Meanwhile, a young girl with mysterious powers was born to an aristocratic family in the countryside...

...me. My name is Sonia. I am the forerunner, who leaves behind to this world the name of the Belmont clan of vampire hunters.

In her bed chamber in Belmont Manor, a luxurious mansion, Lady Vasilisa Belmont, surrounded by two female attendants, was in labor. Lord Jean Belmont, her husband, stood by and watched. Vasilisa screamed in pain.

"Push, my lady! Push!" one of the attendants told her.

Vasilisa screamed.

"Here it comes!" The second attendant took hold of the baby. "I have it! It's a girl!"

She slapped the baby girl, who started crying. Vasilisa laughed in joy.

Jean rushed to her side. "You did it, Vasilisa!"

"Jean, what shall we name her?" Vasilisa asked.

"What do you wish to name her?" he asked her.

Vasilisa paused in consideration. "Sonia...after my mother."

Jean smiled. "Sonia it is. Lady Sonia Belmont."

This is the tale of a young girl's struggle to single-handedly provide Transylvania, a place ruled by madness and despair, with the light of hope.
