A couple of days later, Nyx was outside by herself, Evra was still sleeping so she had a moment to herself.
It was still quiet at the time she was out, not many people were up and walking around.
Nyx stared up at the gray skies as she flailed her arms and legs in the snow. In the process of making a snow angel.
I wonder what other cities are like, Nyx thought since this was the first time that she could remember being in a city like this. What are other cities like?
As she made her angel, contemplating herself, this awful smell wafts her nose as the wind shifts, causing her to scrunch up.
"Eww what smells?" She groaned, sitting up and covering her nose.
It wasn't like any other smell she smelt.
She looked around to see what was so smelly, but she couldn't see it.
Nyx then proceeded to get up and follow the stench. Going over to a nearby storm drain.
The closer she got, she began to notice that the scent was similar to that of a vampire but it wasn't it.
When she got to the drain, she knelt down and peered into the dark hole.
"Hello?" Nyx called out into the darkness.
Though the being didn't say anything back, Nyx could feel it watching her.
She called out again and this time she got a response.
"My aren't you a curious kitten." The man in the sewer chuckled.
With a gasp, Nyx grabbed a brick and chunk in the gap of the storm drain as hard as she could.
"OUCH!" The man hissed before she caught a glimpse of what he looked like.
He was a fat looking man with deep purple skin, red hair, eyes were red - reminded herself of her single red eye. His teeth were filed to a point and his nose was bleeding from getting hit.
He snarled. "Murlough will get you for that!"
With a frightening gasp, Nyx got up, ended up breaking one of Larten's rules and flits away.
Leaving the purple creature baffled at what he just saw.
Nyx flits back to the hotel, comes inside and shuts the door.
"Where have you been!" She jumped and turned to see Evra. His eyes widened in panic, rushing over to her.
"T-there's a monster outside." Nyx blurted, teeth chattering.
Evra shook his head. "Nyx you can't wander off like that, especially when this," he went over to the TV and turned it on. "Is happening."
Nyx took her beanie and eye patch off as she watched the news outlet.
The news were calling it a vampire attack, which left Nyx morbidly confused. The news put up the six victims on screen as they detailed their fatal injuries.
"Is… is Larten still asleep?" Nyx quietly asked Evra after the news cut to commercial.
Evra nodded. "He is."
"I-It can't be Larten doing this. V-vampires don't kill when they feed." Nyx said but her voice trembled.
She knew one vampire who would kill those he feeds upon, sometimes forcing her to kill them.
Was that purple creature she just saw might have something to do with this? What a coincidence that may be.
Evra looked at Nyx for the longest time, contemplating what to say to that. He himself hasn't seen Mr. Crepsley acts out, this being the first time hearing any news of vampire-like killings. With what Nyx went through with an evil vampire, it's not something he would want to put her through that again.
Nyx gulped. "I saw something in the sewers, maybe they have something to do with them." she suggested.
"What did you see?" Evra asked her.
"A really big man with purple skin, red hair and red eyes like me." She said, pointing at her red eye. "Very scary looking too."
He frowned. "A man with purple skin….I know I have green scales but really?"
"I saw him." She said a little more loudly.
Evra motioned his hands to have her lower her voice. "Okay, okay, you saw someone in the sewers. You sure it wasn't a homeless person you saw?"
Nyx glared at him in a way that made her single red eye appear to glow.
"Either way, it's best if we don't leave the hotel for a while, while this is going on at least." Evra said. "Okay?"
Nyx let out a deep sigh but nodded.
It was much safer inside….
Or so she thought.
Late that night, the children were deep asleep, a slight click of the window latch and it swung open.
A dark figure slid inside the hotel room. Snow dripped from their boots as they stood in the literal darkness before slowly walking across the area.
Walking towards where the two were asleep. It barely glanced over to the snakeboy before peering over to the child.
Nyx was curled up in her blanket, whimpering softly in her sleep. Face contorting as if she was having a nightmare.
A hand reached out and gently moved a hair from her eyes before the figure smiled widely at her.
The child tossed and turned before a smell hit her nose and caused her to wake up with a startled gasp, sitting upright in fright.
Eyes widened, she quickly scanned the hotel room before looking over to Evra and relaxed somewhat, seeing her friend/brother was still in deep slumber. His eyes were open but that's normal as most snakes sleep with their eyes open.
She rubbed her face with a pant before getting a flash of cold air hitting her. Nyx looked up and saw the window was opened.
Curiously, she got up before freezing, noticing the boot prints from the snow that went from her bed to the window.
A frightened chill went down her spine and her heart began pounding. She went over to the window and closed it back up and locked it.
With an eerie sense, Nyx went over to the kitchen area, hopping on the counter and grabbing a knife - one of which they had bought when they began renting out the hotel room - and jumped down.
Holding the knife close to her chest, she did a quick sweep of the room. She checked the bathroom and found it empty. She checked where Larten had slept and it was empty too.
Nyx gulped before she closed the door and went back out to the main area. She went back over to the window and felt her blood run cold.
The snake doll she had made for Evra was outside in the snow.
She raced over to her bed, knelt down and gasped softly.
Both the snake and the spider were not there.
And yet the snake was outside….
Nyx scarefully looked at the door with a whimper.
She grabbed her jacket, threw on her boots and slowly left the hotel room with knife in tow in her pocket.
No one stopped her as she walked down the hallway and down the two flights of stairs before heading outside. Nyx looked around outside and saw no one in sight.
But she could feel eyes were heavily on her.
Just get it and run back inside. Nyx thought.
With a count of three, Nyx flitted for the snake doll, grabbed it and quickly flitted back inside. She flits back up the stairs, down the hallway and back into the hotel room and locks the door.
…..
Larten came back as dawn was rising. Having not found what he looked for, was just looking for some sleep.
He inserts the key into the lock and opens the door and heads inside.
When he came in, he looked over to the children. Evra was still in bed, however Nyx was not.
With a hum, he looked over to the bathroom, looking for any sign of light or anyone in there, but the lights were still off.
"Where did she go?" He muttered, looking around the small main area and she was not there.
He knelt down on her bedside to look to see if she was underneath but she was not.
He reached over to Evra and gently shook him.
"Uh, wha?" Evra spoke groggy, surprised to see the older vampire was staring at him.
"Where is Nyx?" he asked the boy straight out of the gate.
Evra blinked confused and looked over to see the empty bed. "She's not here?" He quickly got out of bed. "I-I don't know." He responded.
With what they saw on the news, having Nyx missing was something they did not need.
Larten went to his room, thinking she was there. He looked around the corner, underneath his bed before turning his head and saw that the closet was just barely opened.
He quietly stood up and went over to the closet and opened it and he let out a soft gasp.
Nyx was bunched up in the closet, face as white as her hair, shaking from head to toe, holding a knife in one hand and a snake doll in the other, wearing her jacket and boots.
"Evra, I found her." Larten calls out to the panicking boy before kneeling down to Nyx. "Nyx, why are you in here?" He asked her, but she didn't say a word.
Something had definitely frightened her to the point she would be hiding with a weapon.
Evra came in and saw how she was.
"It is alright," Larten said in a soothing manner, "You can come out," He hesitantly raised a hand and reached for the knife with caution.
Nyx didn't resist when he grabbed the knife and took it out of her hand and ushered the child out.
"What happened?" Evra asked her but like Larten, she didn't say a word, seeing her clutching the snake doll in her hands, staring at the ground.
It took Nyx a long time before she looked up at the two and uttered, "Someone was in here…"
