"Uncle Tom and Aunt Sasha sent me ten thousand dollars!"
Kara looked up from the spaghetti sauce she was stirring, exchanging a concerned look with Danny. "Frankie, sweetheart, what are you talking about?"
"Uncle Tom gave me a treasure box full of gold coins!" Frankie explained, jumping around, holding a small brown box that — sure enough — was shaped like a treasure box.
Danny was the first to react. "Hey, buddy, let me see that."
Frankie started handing over the box, only to hesitate, eyeing Danny suspiciously. "Are you going to take it and put it in my college account?"
Kara turned back to the sauce, unable to hide her amusement, so she missed Danny's response. She did, however, get herself under control in time to see Danny open the treasure box and, just as Frankie said, it was full of gold coins. Delicious, gold-foil covered chocolate coins.
Biting her lip, Kara glanced at Danny again, to see that he was practically shaking from the effort not to laugh. Turning down the burner so the sauce didn't get too hot, she knelt down next to her son.
"Frankie, this isn't real money," she said gently. She picked up a coin, using her fingernail to strip off the foil wrapper. "The coin is chocolate."
If possible, Frankie's eyes grew even bigger. "It's chocolate. Do you know how much these are worth? I bet I can get Archie to give me all of his comics for these."
As Frankie disappeared out the door, Kara turned to Danny with a shake of her head. "He's not entirely wrong. Chocolate might be harder to source than money these days."
A slow smile split Danny's face. "Is that so, Mrs. Green? Because it just so happens that I snagged these when Frankie wasn't looking."
Kara tried to look stern as Danny opened his fist to reveal a half dozen gold coins, but when he started wiggling his eyebrows, she gave up. Wrapping her arms around his waist, she leaned up to give him a lingering kiss. "What do I have to do to earn one?"
Scooping Kara up, ignoring her squeal of protest, Danny headed down the hall towards their bedroom. "I'll let you know later."
