A few days have passed since Chara had been adopted, it is seven-thirty A.M. Toriel just woke Asriel up and Chara heard Asriel's voice, "Good morning Chara!"
"Morning Azzy. The Human replies as she rubs her eyes.
"Azzy? You've never called me that before."
"Oh! Uh… I like it as your nickname."
"Sweet" The Prince jumps up and down, "I have a nickname!"
"Good morning Chara!"
Chara jumps off her bed to her feet, "Mrs. Toriel!"
The Queen chuckles, "He-ha. Asgore's in the kitchen setting out the dining room chairs and table. We've decided to leave them out."
"Yay! Cereal!" Asriel jumps into the air and scaddles to the kitchen.
Chara speaks, "You guys have cereal?"
"Mhm. We have industrial factories down here, such as on the surface. We had to order specifically physical foo for you, with a hint of magic for us!"
"Why do you need magic in your food?"
"Haha! My Child, Monsters are made of magic! We need a source of energy to feed our bodies. They're maintained twenty-four-seven by our souls. And since we, Boss Monsters are more physical than the average Monster we need both!"
The Human Child frowns, "I don't understand…"
Toriel lifts a finger, "Monster physiology is quite hard to understand my child. It's not an easy task. You see Monsters are attuned to their souls by magic or a few say, Grace. Humans on the other hand are mostly physical. Water. Were you not taught Human physiology my child?"
"I was taught Human physiology."
"How old are you Chara?"
"Ten."
"Do they not teach about us on the surface?"
The Human Child shakes her head, "No. You guys are just folk legends."
"What a shame, is it not? That Monster History has disappeared from Man."
"That war, can I know more about it?"
"You will eventually my child. But not today. Today you will show me what you know in Math and English."
"Will Asriel be joining us?"
"Unfortunately not. He goes to a public school. We'd let you go but not now. You shouldn't be around other Monsters yet."
"Because they'll hurt me?"
"I will be honest with you my child. We have no idea how other Monsters would react to your arrival. It's best to be on the safe side. Not that we believe you'd be in any real danger. We must be off now." She says as she walks to the door.
Chara stretches her legs and walks out with Toriel and The Queen asks, "What are your favorite subjects?"
"History and Science. I'm dying to know about The Great Human and Monster war."
"As I said another time dear. There's too much to go over."
Both arrive at the dining room table, Asriel is seen putting a spoonful of Count Counto puffs (brown flakes shaped like a vampire's head) into his mouth. "Chara!" Asriel screams.
"You've got to try this. It's amazing! A bite packed with Chocolate flavor!"
Chara doesn't hesitate to climb into the huge chair and grabs a bowl, then she grabs the box and dumps the Count Counto puffs into her bowl. Taking a spoonful, she puts it into her mouth. Her eyes widen, never had she tasted chocolate so sweet and rich. Putting her spoon back in, she takes another bite, swallowing, rinsing, and repeating. Eventually finishing, she pours another bowl and consumes this one twice as fast.
Asriel, stunned, that he hadn't finished his first bowl, "Wow Chara. You like chocolate."
"I love chocolate Azzy. On the surface, it is my favorite but this! The crunchy flake heads are so sweet! It must be the magic!"
Asgore comes walking out of the kitchen with a pastry and pulls his chair out. Toriel walks out of the kitchen with a pastry and a hot chocolate, "So Chara" Both THe King and Queen speak."
The lovely couple pauses and stares at each other, then put their fingers over their mouths and laughs. "Go ahead, Tori."
"No, you got a head, Gorey!"
"Ok." The King replies, "So Chara, we saw you inhale the cereal. Did you love it that much!"
"I did! I have never tasted any chocolate like this. Is it the magic?"
"Yes. Toriel and I had many great Human chefs cook for us and it was delicious. But even magic spells in the food enhance the taste beyond physical limitations." The King smiles.
Chara stands up on the chair and leans over the dining table with one hand and waving the other in the air, "What does a chocolate bar taste like?"
"Hmmm! " Toriel smilies while ignoring the temptation to tell Chara not to stand in her chair as she did Asriel. "You can find out later my child."
"I can't wait!"
Minutes pass and Toriel and Asgore stand up, "Asriel." Asgore says.
Asriel was just finishing his second bowl, "Yes Dad?"
"Pack your things. Today I'm taking you to school."
"Why isn't Mom?"
"Your Mother has handed some responsibility to me so that she can teach Chara."
"Why can't Chara come with me?"
"Because we are not ready for her to be seen. You can absolutely not tell anyone you now have a sibling."
"Yes, Dad."
"Oh, Chara!" Toriel yells."
"Yes, Mrs. Toriel?"
"Your classroom will be here on the dining room table. Say goodbye Asriel."
Asriel runs up to Chara and wraps his arms around her and squeezes her. Chara sits paralyzed, her pupils shrink, and sweat drips from her face just for a moment. Chara raises her arms around Asriel's waist and returns the hug. Closing her eyes, she squeezes and lets go and hides the tears that are trying to pry their way out, to seem strong to Asriel.
"Bye Chara." Asriel waves and puts on his backpack.
"Bye Asriel."
Chara's head looks to the ground and her long shades her eyes. Toriel, by the entrance waving goodbye, when coming back inside she finds tears hitting the monochrome floor by a pair of small legs.
"My child?" Toriel says as she slowly approaches with a palm covering her mouth."
Chara looks the other way, "Please don't look at me."
"Oh, my child. It's ok. You need not be embarrassed."
"Mmmfffttt. Don't tell Asriel."
"Chara… Asriel won't make fun of you."
"Not that… I want to be a big kid. Big kids don't cry."
"Chara…" Toriel finally arrives and puts one hand over Chara's shoulder, "Big kids are allowed to cry."
'No, they aren't…"
"Who said that?"
"The S.C.U.M on the surface."
Toriel gasps, "Ch-Chara…"
"I'm sorry!" Chara screams while looking the other way."
The Queen, rising to her feet and putting both hands into her sleeves, "My child it will be ok. No one down here will bully you anymore."
"They won't?"
"No. And if someone does I will handle it."
At this point Chara's face is red and small streams of tears run down her rosy cheeks, "Y-you will?"
The Human Child lunges forward and hugs Toriel, "Thank you M-Mo." Chara stops herself.
Toriel's eyes widen, "My Child? It's ok… If you feel comfortable calling me Mom. Go ahead."
"No… I can't. I have a Mother."
"Oh… I see… Tht-that's ok. Let us start class." The Queen says as her body stiffens.
"Mrs. Toriel! I'm-I'm sorry…"
"It's ok. If you're not comfortable calling me Mom. This is ok."
"Ok…" Toriel enters her bedroom and Chara starts to rub her arm. Her face falls to the ground again, thinking to herself, "My mother never did anything to stop those mean kids. But… Mrs. Toriel said she would handle my bullies…"
Toriel comes out with four workbooks two in each arm, "First we will begin with Math. Standard addition and Multiplication." She says cheerfully."
"Let's start with something easy, two times two equals?"
"Four."
'Good Chara. Three times two equals?"
"Six."
"Excellent let's do something a little more challenging, ten times two equals?"
Chara counts her fingers, "Two, four, six, eight, ten, twelve, fourteen, sixteen, eighteen, twenty."
"Very good. Time for addition, thirty-seven plus sixty-one?"
"Ninety-eight."
"One hundred and thirteen plus one hundred and twenty-five?"
"Two hundred and thirty-eight?"
"One hundred and nineteen plus two hundred and thirty-four?"
Chara begins to add nine and four, she gets thirteen, she carries the one and gets five, and then adds two plus one.
"Three hundred and fifty-three."
"I want you to multiply three hundred and sixty-seven times three."
"I haven't multiplied that high before."
"Let me teach you, we start with seven times three and get a twenty-one. Put the one down now carry the two over the six, and put a plus sign. Now six times three equals eighteen, now add two, and that equals twenty, carry that two over the three. Excellent Chara. Three times three equals nine, now add the two. You now have one thousand, one hundred and one. It's that simple."
"Ok."
Time to subtract and divide. Chara what is three minus two?"
"One."
"Twnty-four minus twenty-two?"
"Two."
"What is three hundred and sixty-seven-three hundred and twenty-two?"
"Forty-five."
"Excellent. Now let's try simple division. Three divided by one."
"Three."
"Two divided by two."
"One."
"Twelve divided by three."
"Uh…" She multiplies with her fingers, "Four."
"Two hundred divided by four."
'I don't know my division that high."
"This is where I can teach you. First, write the problem out like this. Now can you divide a two?"
"No. Two is smaller than four."
"Ok. Then we divide the twenty. What multiplication problem equals twenty?"
"Five."
"Ok. Now put the five up there, now subtract twenty, and You get zero. Very good. Now you drag that zero down and now place it up there. You get fifty. Now let's try this, two hundred thirty-one."
"Seven."
"Good Chara. Now?"
"Another seven. Seventy-seven."
"Good Chara! Now two hundred thirty-five divided by three."
"Seven."
"Now?" Toriel points.
"Eight. I have one left over."
"Put it as a remainder of one. Now what I want you to do is, solve these one hundred questions in your workbook."
Chara opens her workbook and begins to answer the questions. Toriel stands up, and walks to sit on Chairel, the living room chair, and puts a book out and reading glasses. Two hours pass and Chara calls out, "Mrs. Toriel."
Toriel puts her reading glasses away and her book, "You're done, are you not?"
"Here." Chara hands the book over.
"Good Chara. I will see the answers you have written in your workbook. Go find something to do as I grade this."
As Toriel begins to grade, she grows a smile slowly as she goes through. By the time she reaches the end, her smile is wide as the moon's crescent, "Oh, Chara!"
Chara opens the bedroom door and leans out, "Yes, ?"
"You did exceptionally well! You got a one hundred percent!"
Chara smiles, "I did?"
"Yes! I'm curious how well you will do with your English. Today we will be learning nouns and adjectives!"
"Ok."
Chara and Toriel open their workbooks both, taking their seats, Toriel at the end and Chara to her left, "So Chara, what is a noun?"
"A person, place, or thing."
'Excellent, my child! Now what we're going to do is identify nouns in sentences. This sentence should be easy. Mrs. Toriel went to the Kingdom's bakery."
"Mrs. Toriel, Kingdom's, bakery."
"Good job Chara! Now this one, Knight Knight is easily put to sleep tonight."
"Knight Knight, and sleep."
"Excellent my child. I'm going to amp up the challenge to find the adjectives too. Asgore's trident is red."
"Asgore, trident, red."
"Good job Chara, now answer these fifty questions and find all the nouns and adjectives."
Two more hours pass; Chara turns in her workbook, and Toriel begins to grade it. Once halfway through, her same grin appears, and once finished, her smile is shaped as the moon's crescent again.
"Chara! You also excelled in your English!"
Chara smiles, "Thank you."
"Your parents must be so proud."
Chara's eyes shrink, and sweat drips from her face again, "Y-yeah…"
"Amazing, Chara! Outstanding! I can't wait to see what else you've learned. "Holding the workbook up to her face, not being able to see Chara's reaction.
"Ok."
"For today, that will be enough. Asriel will be home soon!"
Chara packs her things up and walks to her bedroom; arriving, she places the workbooks under her bed. Chara climbs into her bed and falls asleep. Nighttime falls, and Chara wakes up to find Asriel in his yellow pajama; climbing into his bed, Asriel says, "Hi Chara, how was your day?"
"It was alright. I got to show Mrs. Toriel what I already knew, and she taught me how to multiply and divide big numbers. I passed both English and Math with one hundred's."
"That's amazing =! We learned Monster currency."
"Monster currency?"
"Yeah, how we mine for gold and why we call it G for short."
"Where do you get your gold from?"
"We mine it deep underground in Waterfall. We pan it too in the river canals."
"Oh…" Chara turns to face the wall and thinks to herself, "Why do I feel weird… something in my gut feels like deep knots."
Chara sighs, "Huh…"
She turns over to the other side of the bed, "Asriel…"
Asriel switched sides after Chara stopped talking and faced her side, turning on his left shoulder, "Yes, Chara?"
"I don't feel so good."
"Want me to get Mom and Dad?"
"No. Not that kind of feeling. The one where something isn't settling right."
"Oh. What's bugging you?"
"I feel bad… feel bad about…"
"About what?"
"About getting your Mom's hope up."
"How so?"
Chara raises her head and rests it on the back of her hands, "By almost calling her Mom."
"You almost called her Mom? Why?"
The Human Child; sheds a tear, "She said she would stop anyone from bullying me."
"Oh. What made you stop?"
Turning on her left shoulder, "I have a mother…"
"You miss her?"
"I don't know… I don't think so…"
"Chara, what did your Mother do to you?"
"Nevermind, Asriel. Go to sleep."
"Chara?"
"I S.A.I.D G.O T.O S.L.E.E.P A.S.R.I.E.L"
Asriel sits up with the blanket covering half his body, "Oh… Ok."
Lying back in bed, tucking himself in, and facing his wall. Chara lays in bed with tears flowing from her eyes, reminiscing, "Chara you useless child! You can't do anything right!"
"Chara you little shit!"
A sound hard enough to leave a red mark across the face and tears pouring from the eyes. "Why Mom? Why didn't you ever love me?"
