Kara cupped the tiny blue stocking, covered in tiny snowflakes and embroidered with Baby's First Christmas across the top, designed to be hung on a Christmas tree. The sight of one of her favorite decorations drawing a smile, but also causing a lump to form in her throat.
On the ladder next to her, Danny leaned back, hand outstretched. "Kara? I need another ornament."
She nodded, reaching down quickly to pluck one from the box blindly. Her hand came back with a large grinch, designed to slip candy canes into his hand. She handed it to Danny, but he didn't move, instead his gaze focused on her face. "Are you okay?"
Glancing up, seeing the concern on his face, Kara felt tears threaten. "Yes. I found the ornament that Carlton gave us the year that Frankie was born. I just..." She trailed off. "We should find a special place for it."
Before she finished speaking, Danny was already climbing down the ladder. A ghost of a smile crossed his face as he reached out to take the tiny stocking. "Did Burk ever tell you how much work he went through to get this? Apparently, he made Miller stop at every Hallmark store they passed on their way to Chicago until he found what he was looking for."
Kara chuckled. "He wanted something special for Frankie. But it had to be blue, for the Navy, and have snowflakes, because we were in the Arctic."
Danny nodded. "I think what he really wanted was something from the Academy store, but the place was destroyed."
"They reopened it," Kara said, biting down on her lip. "I wonder..."
Danny reached out, hand stretching across her no-longer-smooth stomach and the little girl inside. "We could ask Tom if they have ornaments again. Get one for the new baby. Sort of carrying on the tradition that Burk started."
Kara moved her hand on top of Danny's just in time to feel the baby kick. She laughed, then felt a tear roll down her cheek. "I miss him. I miss him a lot."
Wrapping his arms around her, Danny pulled Kara close. "Me too."
