Candle disposed of and the kitchen aired out, Ravit allowed Carlton to lead her into the dining room and seat her at the table. She squinted in the dim light. "How many gifts did you buy?"
"Oh, those," Carlton waved a hand in the direction of the wrapped boxes that covered their entire sidetable. "A few people dropped off Hanukkah gifts. The guys, Sasha, Kara — mostly because she said Danny wanted to keep the thing for himself — and Mike."
Reminding herself that they meant well, even if they didn't seem to understand that Hanukkah wasn't actually Christmas, Ravit smiled. "That was thoughtful of everyone." She was just picking up the matchbox to light the shamash candle when she noticed something sitting to her right. "Are those oysters?"
"Yup, Bacon got some in today and I grabbed them right up," Carlton wiggled his eyebrows at her. "You know what they say about oysters, don't you?"
"That they aren't kosher?" Ravit replied.
"They, what?" Carlton asked. Then he sighed. "Shellfish, right. But you've had oysters before."
Ravit shrugged. "Not for Hanukkah. Well, possibly. I've had MREs a few times and God himself doesn't know what's in those things." She wavered. After all, oysters did sound delicious, but she could hear her mother shrieking at the mere suggestion. "Maybe Danny and Kara will want them?"
"I'll put them away," Carlton replied, disappearing into the kitchen. He returned a minute later, his puppy dog mug almost too much for Ravit.
"We'll have oysters for Christmas," Ravit offered.
Carlton's face brightened for a second, before he shook his head. "Nah, I want us to both have things to eat that we like."
Smiling, Ravit leaned forward to take Carlton's hand. "Let's light the candle together."
