Meanwhile, down the street.
Mike stepped out of his bedroom and immediately cursed. He looked down at the line of small, plastic blocks scattered across the hall. "Damn kids and their Legos."
On his way through the living room, Mike grabbed the remote — planning to snap on the lights of the Christmas tree — puzzled to find that the remote was wet. He glanced around the sidetable, but nothing else seemed to be wet. Mike sighed internally, assuming that either Kaito or Logan was responsible. Neither was what might call neat. He went to set the remote down, only to realize that his hand was blue. Clearly the boys were up to something.
He had just crossed the threshold into the kitchen, planning to grab a rag to clean off the remote, when he felt something hit his head, immediately followed by a cascade of water and foam. Mike gasped, managing to inhale a mouthful of foam.
"Kaito! Logan!"
Mike's roar brought every member of his household into the kitchen. Christine's mouth fell open as she took in the sight of Mike, covered in water and foam and dripping everywhere. Whitney started laughing, followed almost instantly by her brothers, and even Shaylyn giggled.
Mike narrowed his eyes when Whitney lifted her phone to take a picture. "This is not funny."
"Yes it is," Whitney retorted.
"That's not the way to treat your father," Christine scolded, before cracking a smile. "Although it is a little funny."
Ignoring them, Mike turned his attention to his two young sons. "Do either of you have something to tell me?"
"We weren't trying to get you, Daddy," Kaito began. "We wanted to catch the Grinch."
"Yeah, so he wouldn't steal our presents," Logan confirmed.
Mike glanced up, noting the hook just above the top of the doorframe. "And how did the two of you get a balloon up there?"
Kaito and Logan exchanged looks. Kaito was the first to speak. "With a ladder?"
Switching his attention to his daughters, Mike arched an eyebrow. He expected Shalyn to cave first, but Whitney was the one to heave a sigh and flip her hair over her shoulder. "Like I said, it's funny."
"I expect you to clean this up," Mike responded.
"Of course," Whitney seemed unperturbed. She headed towards the closet with the mop. "Oh, and Dad?"
"Yes?"
Whitney's eyes sparkled mischievously. "Your hair is blue."
