Kara walked outside to find Danny on the front porch, feet propped up on the rail as he stared out at the water. She stopped in the doorway, watching the wind ruffle the no-longer-regulation-length waves of hair, now more salt-and-pepper than sandy. But the line of his chin and the set of his shoulders remained the same as the young man she met so many years ago in the Arctic.
After a moment, she crossed the porch, sitting next to him on the swing. Resting her head on his shoulder, Kara curled her legs up next to her, Danny's arm going around her almost automatically. She closed her eyes, breathing in the fresh, crisp air. Enjoying the quiet, the simplicity of the day, especially following the chaos of yesterday when the house had been stuffed to the rafters with children, young and old. She loved her children dearly, but she had also come to enjoy these days. When it was just the two of them, for the first time ever.
She wasn't sure how much time passed before she spoke. "Happy anniversary."
Danny glanced sideways, his face lighting up in a grin that still made her heart turn over. "Happy anniversary, sweetheart."
"Can you believe that it's been thirty years?" She asked, the question more for herself than for Danny. Memories of those early days now so blurred that there were times when Kara could hardly remember them. Both of them so very different, yet so very much the same people they were today.
Danny's arm tightened, giving her a slight squeeze. "I'm hoping for thirty more."
