Chapter 2

How long he had felt suspended in time Sédgae could not say, but suddenly something changed. Slowly he regained the ability to move. As soon as he was freed he lifted his head and roared. Beating his wings, he shot a blast of flames into the sky. The dragon lowered his head to look for the Witch…and locked eyes with a pair of beautiful, golden orbs.

Sédgae's fury instantly vanished as he stared at the Lion. "Aslan?" He questioned in disbelief.

"Yes," the High King above all kings answered. "I have come, and with me are the Daughters of Eve, Susan and Lucy."

Sédgae swung his head above the crowd of creatures-that-had-one-been-statues and saw two human girls standing with the Lion, both of them with dark hair and lighter colored eyes. The older girl, however, had darker hair than the younger, and they were clearly sisters.

The younger girl–Lucy he assumed–was looking at him with—to a dragon—the most curious expression of wonder, excitement, and (possibly) a hint of fear.

"Your Majesties." The drake said, bowing his head so that his nose touched the ground. Cocking his head to the side, he saw Lucy directly opposite him. Sédgae blew a warm breath out of his nostrils in a sort of greeting to her. The girl's short, golden-brown hair whipped out behind her as she giggled. Repeating the gesture to the older girl, who was most likely Susan, the dragon then turned to see what Aslan wanted of him. (He caught sight of a young lion out of the corner of his eye, but something seemed wrong about its face. It almost looked like someone had drawn on it.)

Aslan was talking to a giant about opening the gates. Sédgae said, "allow me" to the giant and—with a swipe of his tail—blasted the doors of their hinges. He also happened to demolish a section of the wall.

"Thank you," the Lion said to him. "That will make destroying this evil place easier."

"Where are you going?" Ségdae asked as the freed Narnians began arranging themselves into groups.

"We go to battle against the White Witch." A centaur answered. "Will you come?"

The dragon nodded. "I will," he answered, "but I have some business to take care of first."

After the group was safely away, Sédgae began smashing the walls of the castle where a tyrant queen had ruled for so long.

As Ségdae flew toward the battle a tremendous roar filled the air. The very air shook, and the force of it made him pause for just an instant before he resumed his flight. The battlefield spread out below him, and he targeted a fleeing giant. Swooping down he easily grabbed the giant in his claws.

Narnians shrieked in surprise as he flew over, but he paid them no heed. The giant writhed in the dragon's claws as Sédgae soared miles above the battlefield. Gracefully, Sédgae swooped down and smashed the giant against the ground, dropping him and flying up again to search for another victim.

He saw the golden coat of the Lion on the ground, walking among the stone statues scattered on the battlefield. The dragon also saw four figures—two of them being the Daughters of Eve he had met at the Witch's castle—gathered in a small group on the ground.

Swiftly he glided down and landed beside them. The other two, that he now saw were boys, jumped up in surprise. Susan looked up sharply as he landed, but Lucy was up and running toward him by the time his feet touched the ground.

"Lu! What are you doing!" The shout came from the blond-haired boy.

The one with black hair was staring at him like he had seen him before.

Sédgae lowered his head so that his chin rested on the grass. In this position the drake's eye was level with the top of Lucy's head.

Smiling, Lucy reached out her hand–then stopped, looking at the dragon questioningly. Sédgae shifted his head so that the girl's hand rested on his cheek. Susan also came up to him and–rather shyly–wrapped an arm around the horn on his nose.

The red-gold dragon cocked an eye at the two Sons of Adam and said, "My name is Sédgae. I am your Majesties' servant."
