The Fierce God Given Life
Chapter 2: No Longer a Mortal Man
The sun finally began to rise; this was almost it! Link loosed another arrow at the invaders, Romani just behind him. The two fought Them as a team, but the mysterious beings just kept returning behind the previous ones that were defeated.
And finally, the sun arose to their side, and it marked the end of the invasion. Romani and Link took a moment to look around as Epona finally calmed down.
"We did it… We won!" Romani exclaimed, sharing a look of victory with Link. She then went into the barn to check on the cows.
"Thank you!" she said as she returned from the barn. "Thanks to you, the cows are giving thanks, too!"
Link gave her a brief look of puzzlement, before she finally revealed a bottle from behind her.
"Here's Romani's thanks." She told the boy in green. "When you drink it, put your hand on your hip and take a big gulp like we do at the ranch!"
Romani handed him the bottle of milk, fresh from the cows. Link looked at the bottle, a feeling of earnesty growing within him, and smiled wide when he rose his gaze to meet Romani.
"It's almost time for my sister to get up, so I have to get back to bed…" Romani said in a soft voice, taking a little step towards her friend. "See you later… Little hero."
Link felt a sense of pride when she acknowledged him as a hero, something so rare for a person of his… profession. What he didn't expect was a quick peck on the cheek by Romani, before she ran off back to the house.
Link stood there for a moment, unsure what to think of Romani's bold move. He felt his cheek where her lips had met and made the dopiest grin Tatl had ever seen.
"Uuuugh! Alright, bud, get over yourself! We have work to do!" Tatl berated Link, as he returned to his self-enforced "Hero mode" and rushed to Epona, taking off from the ranch soon after. A look of determination replaced his grin as he raced to his next task in his Bombers Notebook. And on each cycle, he was always granted a kiss from Romani. And he grew happier and happier each time.
Tatl bumped him in the head, bringing Link back to reality.
"Hey! Don't we have a fight to win?!" Tatl yelped, looking at her partner.
Link flinched and looked around again, and then back at himself. Right! He was facing Majora! Everything came back to him, his grand double-helix sword in hand, as the demon witch began to side-step to the right, prompting Link to go to the left.
For a second, Link was unsure what to do. What would the best strategical move for him? Make the first move and get blindsided by a possible new attack from Majora, or wait for her to make the first move and attack accordingly?
He decided not to wait, and charged at Majora, who retaliated with doing the same. When the two combatants were about to meet, he slashed his sword. A terrible screech came from Majora as she fell to the ground, flailing about on the ground like a child who was told they couldn't get a toy they wanted.
Link stepped back on instinct, not knowing if this was a ruse by the mask. What he didn't do on instinct was jab his sword forward. He didn't know why he did so, but what he saw was fascinating. A beam of blue light emerged from the great sword, hitting the mask and causing her to scream. For a brief second he felt some sort familiarity with this move, like he was able to do it before.
Link didn't have much time to be surprised by the new ability, as Majora was back running in no time. He waited for Majora's next attack, watching her do her dances intently. When she paused for a moment and faced him, he knew to get out of her line of sight.
Majora did her energy attack again, barely missing Link as he jumped and rolled. It was by this time Link realized he didn't have a shield with him, only his sword. He foolishly stopped in his tracks for a moment and brought his sword up in a defensive position, only to be met with electrocution courtesy of Majora.
After collecting himself, Link waited once more until Majora attacked again, still using the energy orbs.
"Pretty much a one-trick pony, huh?" Tatl remarked, and Link focused on his opponent. Tatl was usually met with a smirk or a chuckle from Link when she made one of her remarks but was a little confused when she saw no expression from her companion.
It was then Link decided to attack once more, bring Majora to her knee's multiple times with his sword beams and raw slashes. Only when she was brought down for the last time did Link's expression change, it being a brief smile as Majora flailed about helplessly and gravitated to the center of the arena.
Talt and Link shared another look of triumph, until there was a snap from Majora, and her limbs started expanding.
Link showed visible disgust as Majora's arms and legs filled with muscle, and her torso became more defined. She grew visible heels on her feet, and her arms lengthened to what looked like whips. Her eye stalk was replaced with a menacing head, eyes only swirls of what he described as "pure chaos".
With a feminine screech, she lashed her whips in an animalistic pose and faced the Fierce Deity. Link… recognized this form? The memory was somehow new, stuck somewhere in the back of his mind. He brushed the feeling of déjà vu off and stood aggressively.
Majora's new form reminded him of something else, however. Something he knew he truly recognized… her markings all over her body. They resembled the paint on the Stone Tower Temple. Again, he pushed these fleeting memories aside side, focusing only on his battle against Majora's Mask.
Her first move was to swing her arm and lash Link in the chest. He flew a few feet and landed on the ground with a thud. He looked at his now cracked armor, astonished as it sealed and repaired itself in seconds.
"That's some neat trick, that old power of yours…" Majora said, her shrill voice echoing through infinity even thought they were still inside her lair.
Link looked at the demon and rose back to his feet. He fired a beam from his sword, which Majora dodged by somersaulting away. She retaliated by sending her whip to Link, wrapping around his waist. He showed visible fear right until she pulled her arm back, resulting in Link being thrown across the arena.
He landed just feet from Majora, and then she nimbly walked over to him and twirled, ending her display with a powerful kick that again sent him flying. Not as far or as high this time, but he went a good distance before skidding to a stop.
For the first time, Link felt pain in this new form of his, the armor covering him working to repair itself from the damage of Majora's power.
Before the hero could get up, she lashed her whip upon him again, keeping him down before twirling around, whips flying. Link then coughed up some blood, that which made Tatl greatly concerned for him.
When Link finally got up again, he only got a chance to fire his sword beam once when Majora lassoed him up with her arms again. She pulled, but didn't let go, and he sailed right into her grasp, her other tentacle appendage wrapping around him.
"You are not the man I know…" she told the Hero of Termina, looking over at the blood splattered on the floor of her arena. "You are still a mortal. A small mortal boy."
She made a sickening smile and brought him closer, tightening her grip on the boy in a God's clothing, making him wince in pain.
"I'll finish you, and then I'll have all this land for myself once again." Her venomous voice shook Link to the core. "Everyone you've helped, will die by my hand…"
Link opened his eyes, the pupilless orbs of light staring right into Majora's. He nearly went limp and then Majora threw him with all her might, slamming into the wall and falling to the floor.
Link didn't move, the demon witch's cackle echoing through the arena. Link just stared towards the ceiling, and he once again got lost in thought, thinking of a certain moment.
Link was waiting in the Stock Pot Inn, sitting by the table in the employee's room. Anju was just across from him, sitting on the bed. They were both waiting.
"I said that boy should've just come with us…" Tatl complained, remembering her offer to Kafei to just join them with the Song of Soaring. She feared he might be too late to return to Clock Town, the moon looming dangerously close, time running out.
"Hey…" Link warned, a soft tone in his voice. He usually stayed silent, but he knew Anju didn't need any complaining at a time like this.
He didn't need to speak, as just after he said that word, the sound of the door opening caught all three's attention.
Kafei bolted upstairs and opened the door to the employee room. Both Anju and Link stood up as Kafei walked to Anju.
Anju held her wedding mask in her hands and got to her knees to meet Kafei's gaze, seemingly not bothered of his appearance.
"I…I have met you before." She spoke, memories of times long ago flooding back. "What a familiar scene. Long, long ago… Yes. We were still young. We made a promise… Didn't we?"
"The masks of the sun and moon…" Anju told, looking down at the item in her hand, remembering when she made it by hand.
"We were to exchange them on the day of the Carnival of Time..." Anju stated.
Kafei, for the first time, showed a sign of nervousness. All throughout their time in Sakon's hideout, Kafei only bore a look of determination and confidence. Link was astonished, both then, and now.
"Anju… I'm sorry I was late." Kafei replied, looking back at his old friend.
"…Welcome home." Anju said, smiling. It was the only time Link could ever recall her smiling. All the cycles he'd been through, this was the only time. He was filled with pride when he saw Anju and Kafei hug.
"…Teehee! They're lovers, but they look like mother and child." Tatl remarked, recalling the curse put on Kafei by the Skull Kid, reserving him to looking like how he did when he was Link's age.
The two parted, and Kafei retrieved his wedding mask.
"Let us exchange the promised masks." Anju said, before she and Kafei put their masks together, creating the physical embodiment of their dedication to each other, the Couple's Mask.
Link looked at the new mask in awe, and when he returned his view to Anju and Kafei, they were holding hands together.
"We have exchanged our oaths and become a couple." Kafei explained, and Anju followed. "You are our witnesses. Please accept this mask."
Link looked at the two for a second, almost refusing. He didn't feel right taking such an important item from the couple who had earned it. But when he got one look at the happy lovers before him, he took the mask. He beamed from ear to ear as he held the item.
"Please, take refuge. We are fine here." Anju said selflessly. "We shall greet the morning… together."
Even in the darkest of times, when death itself is looming in the sky, people can find peace. Link left without another word; the couple unaware of where he was going, unaware they would truly be able to rest easily tonight.
This cycle was it. He had perfected everything. He'd helped all four regions, saved Romani Ranch from the invaders, rescued the Zora eggs, and gave everyone he could their quantum of solace. This was his last task, and he was happy to leave the two most troubled people he knew with peace.
He suddenly snapped back to reality, this time without the aid of Tatl. The recent memory faded and he saw that Majora was still facing him. What seemed like an eternity of recollection was just a mere five seconds.
Link rose to his feet, a new feeling flowing through his veins.
Majora was ready to lasso him again, and just before she did, Link replaced the Fierce Deity's Mask with the Zora mask. He had an idea on how to stop Majora, without succumbing to the almighty power of a god.
When Majora's tentacle wrapped around Link's Zora form, he immediately discharged his energy shield, sending the current of electricity back to the demon through her appendage. She trembled in pain, as Link then donned the Goron mask and rolled as fast as he could to his enemy.
Before the Zora energy could even dissipate, Goron Link slammed his body into the infernal mask, toppling her to the ground, and with the might of the Goron race, he pummeled her with his powerful fists.
Majora recovered and jumped away, slashing Goron Link once before she left his range, and soon lead into another whip attack. Link switched back to his normal form and quickly rose his shield to block the attack. When the coast was clear, he pulled out his bow and a fire arrow and fired at his tormentor, Majora getting engulfed in flames.
Majora wasn't far from him, so he rolled over to her and jump-slashed with his Gilded Sword, causing a scream of agony to escape her maw. Before the mask of chaos could react, Link put on the Deku Mask and ran to a spot in the ground. Confused, Majora didn't move, and when Link shot into the air and deployed his petal-copter, she could only watch in bewilderment.
Link then dropped some Deku nuts onto the ground, which popped, blinding the demon for a moment, leaving her stunned once again. He wasted no time reverting back into a Hylian and slashed wildly at Majora's Mask.
She let out a scream once again and leaped away, enraged. Instinctively, Link put on the Zora mask in anticipation, and when Majora foolishly tried lassoing the hero again, she was only met with shock. And then a Light arrow to the chest.
Majora spun around, her flying tentacles meeting nothing as she did, and then stopped a few feet away. She was desperate and employed a new attack against her enemy. A spinning top, adorned with spikes around the edges and a single eye on the top. Link didn't know what to make of this but returned to his Hylian form and defended with his shield. What happened to the top was about what he expected, it falling to the ground motionless once it lost its' speed.
What Link didn't expect was to be met with an explosion from behind when he stepped in front of the spinning top. Getting back up and rubbing his back, he was hit by Majora's spin attack and flew about three meters across the room, landing with a groan.
When he got to his feet, he went into his Zora form and sent out his fin boomerangs. Missing Majora at first, she taunted him, only to be met by a smirk from the Zoran warrior.
She was then hit from behind by the returning boomerangs, and Link knew this was the final moment.
Majora, dazed and confused, was about to return to the battle when she felt true pain. She looked down, seeing the Double-Helix sword being plunged through her chest.
Link, in his last moment in the form of the legendary God of the Moon, looked the Sun Goddess in the eyes. She sputtered, an expression of shock across her face.
The Hero of Termina withdrew his weapon from Majora, and she let out a blood-curdling scream as she leaned about. Then, she went limp, her body floating to the center of the arena, tentacle appendages trailing on the floor behind her.
With one last, long scream, she disintegrated, as her lair rumbled and was soon encompassed by light.
He had won.
