Chapter 3

Cair Paravel was a big place, but the crowd that had gathered for the coronation ceremony made it feel small. That — and other reasons — were why Sédgae perched on the cliffs outside. Many of the Narnians seemed nervous around the huge dragon, but he paid them no mind.

With his sharp eyesight he could make out the four young rulers as they approached the four thrones. Of course, it also helped that the crowd parted to make way for them.

The drake waited until the coronation ceremony was over, then he flapped his way to a balcony that overlooked the sea. Sédgae had something he wanted to offer the royal siblings. Unfortunately he nearly didn't get his chance…but after the party the four came out onto the balcony.

Peter and Edmund had been nervous around him at first, but now they were just as friendly toward the dragon as Susan and Lucy were. They watched as the red drake flew in closer.

Sédgae could hardly contain his excitement as he asked the four royals: "Would you like to fly?"

Peter stared at him blankly, as did Susan. Edmund and Lucy were silent. It was finally the Just King who broke the silence.

"What do you mean?" He asked. "We can't grow wings."

As he spoke, understanding dawned on Lucy's face. "You mean a ride on your back!" She interjected.

Sédgae nodded, delighted at the astonishment on the faces of the royal four. Crouching down he let them settle — as comfortably as they could — between the many spines running down his back. Rearing his head back he checked to see if they had a tight hold. Once he was satisfied, the red drake launched himself into the darkening sky.

The dragon could feel their delight as he circled around Cair Paravel, then leveled out and headed northward. He glided over the forest and marshland before turning west. Sédgae could hear the siblings' exclamations of delight as the forest spread out below them in a thick carpet of green. Then banking south, the mountains dividing Archenland and Narnia loomed before them.

With his superior eyesight the red drake could see all the little details of the mountain, from the waterfall to the herd of sheep settling down for the night. Then, as the last of the daylight faded, he turned to face the ocean once again.

"Oh wow!" He heard Peter say as they flew over the simmering water. In the fading light the ocean was alive with colors of deep blue and purple.

Turning once more, the dragon landed by the same balcony where the royal four had started their ride. He waited until he was certain they were all off, then readied himself to fly away.

"Thank you!" Lucy called as he glided down to the beach. Sédgae roared in response, and then warmed the cold sand with his fiery breath. As the dragon settled to sleep, he had only one thought. These four will bring a Golden Age to Narnia that was never before seen, I'm sure of it.

The end.

Note: my theory on why the dragon was a statue in the first place (i.e. a good dragon) is purely speculative. This was just something I wrote for fun.
