Jay sat in a chair outside of Fairy Godmother's office, with his hands buried in his face. He wasn't sure how much longer he could listen to his best friend cry behind the closed door. He had seen the school counselor, Cogsworth, and Ben go into the office as well. God. he wishes he could be in there right now.
Finally, after about 15 minutes, Carlos comes out with Cogsworth, where they walk across the hall to the counselor's office. Jay notices he no longer has his sweatshirt on, but just a tee-shirt. Hundreds of red cuts run along his arms. Ben comes and stands in Fairy Godmother's doorway while Jay's eyes are glued to his best friend.
"Jay. Come have a seat." There are three chairs in front of Fairy Godmother's desk, where she sits, rubbing her temples.
At this moment, Evie shows up in the doorway, along with Lonnie. They sit in the remaining two chairs that Jay hasn't taken.
"Alright, we all understand that there was a confrontation at breakfast. Do any of you know what might have caused Mal to react in such a way?" Ben starts. Complete silence echoes in the room.
"Did any of you know that Carlos was cutting himself?"
Jay immediately shakes his head no. Lonnie and Evie look at each other in shock.
"Wh-what?"
"Did any of you know he was planning on killing himself?"
This was the part that shocked everyone. Jay turned to the two girls. Lonnie let out a sharp gasp. Evie started to tear up almost immediately.
Ben softens. "We know this is a hard conversation for all of you, but we need answers. Did he ever joke about hurting or killing himself? Jay, did you ever find knives or blades in your dorm?" This was the breaking point.
Evie breaks down sobbing. Jay feels a tear fall down his face, but brushes it away before Ben or Fairy Godmother see.
"I mean, sometimes he would take apart razors… I just assumed…" Jay's voice trails off. Lonnie grabs his hand and squeezes it.
"Evie, has he ever opened up to you about these thoughts?"
"I mean… once. It was years ago, and he said he was better… I'm sorry." Evie chokes. Fairy Godmother reaches into her blazer and hands her a handkerchief, before speaking.
"I understand this is a very sensitive topic for you all. Carlos is being transferred to a hospital right now, and then you three are allowed to stay in the counselor's office as long as you'd like. He'll be leaving in about ten minutes, so how about you stay in here until then, and then you all head across the hall for at least a little bit."
Lonnie has surprisingly held herself together well, and nods in understanding. Evie shakes her head in agreement as she dries her eyes. Jay doesn't move, and the clock seems to stop with him.
Finally, after an eternity of sitting in the quiet office, they're cleared to go to Cogsworth's office.
"So Jay, what are your thoughts?"
He zones back in. Cogsworth's office is pretty boring. There's a bookshelf full of fidget toys, coloring books, picture frames and snacks. Him, Evie and Lonnie all sat at a circular table, with a box of tissues in the middle.
Jay looks over at Lonnie, who nods at him.
"Um, well… I weirdly feel like it's my fault because… I could have noticed because I'm his… best friend?" Jay stops because he feels his eyes start to water. Lonnie wraps him in a hug and he finally begins to sob.
