Kevin grinned strangely as he came out of the locker room. He took one look at Kim and nearly lost it. He'd only just managed to stop looking at him and laughing. His cheeks were actually starting to hurt. "What?"

"You'll see." He sat down at his desk and waited.

"Oh My God." The moment Kim saw Adam she flew out of her seat and across the bullpen. "Are you okay? You are hurt? Where are you hurt?"

Adam touched his forehead gingerly where a giant egg was forming as he limped to his desk. "I'll be okay." He whine a little pathetically, clearly making the most of the attention he was getting from Kim and Kevin scoffed loudly.

"He's fine."

Kim tilted his head up to look at the rapidly growing red lump. It looked painful and his eye was starting to look puffy. There was no way he was getting out of this without a black eye. "He's clearly not okay Kevin. Did you get it checked out?" Kim snapped. She literally couldn't control himself as far as Adam was concerned. He was hurt and that sent her stomach spiralling.

"He's fine." Kevin asserted. "Wasn't even limping until a minute ago."

"It's swelling, and you made me walk from the far end of the parking lot. You could've pulled up out front." He winced when Kim lifted his leg up onto the chair she had dragged over from her desk. It wasn't unusual that nobody else made an effort. Unless you were actually dying it was business as usual and Adam clearly wasn't dying.

"What happened to you?" Voight emerged from his office. He'd seen the two of them come back and was waiting for the brief to start. Taking one look at Adam he visibly sighed. The paper work for a workplace injury was a thorn in his side. It was these boring tasks that nobody told you about.

"Nothing Boss, it's fine. Just took a spill."

"See Trudy, fill out the paperwork and head over to Med to get it checked out. I'm not having concussion on my watch if you go down in a screaming heap."

"Too late Boss, he already was a screaming heap." Kevin couldn't hold it in any longer. It was the funniest shit he'd seen in a long time. Even the thought of it made him laugh and every time he'd looked at Ruzek in the car rear vision mirror he let out a chuckle.

"Thanks Kev."

Kim folded her arms across her chest and tapped her foot. She should've known this wasn't all as it seemed. They weren't actually out on a case, but that wasn't to say that things didn't jump off when you were out doing even the most mundane tasks. These two couldn't help themselves, they could find trouble like nobody else.

"I slipped over." Adam waved his hand. "It was nothing I am fine."

"You walked into a power pole and twisted your knee." Kevin chuckled. "And managed to piss off the sweetest old lady known to man."

"He was on his phone wasn't he?" Kim rolled her eyes while Adam sat sulking at his desk. He knew as soon as it happened that he would never live it down and that Kevin would absolutely throw him under the nearest bus. It was what friends do, when he stopped laughing that was.

After holding the door open for a patron to enter the coffee shop he felt his phone buzz and reached for it quickly. It might've been work. Balancing the tray of coffee in one hand with a bag of donuts he opened the message from his nephew, who had gotten a phone for his birthday and loved sending him videos.

Out of the corner of his eye he saw someone approaching in a hurry and stepped aside, smashing head first into the light pole. The coffee and donuts flew out of his hand, covering a very unsuspecting elderly lady with the hot coffee. Quickly she turned around and whacked him with her handbag, yelling obscenities and as Adam gathered his balance the shock of the bag hitting him forced him backwards and he missed the gutter and twisted his knee and ankle as he crashed to the ground between two parked cars and his phone skidded across the road into the path of a passing car.

"Stupid man." The elderly lady berated him. "Why don't you watch where you are going?"

"Sorry."

She then saw his badge and continued. "As a cop you should know better. What sort of cop are you?"

Looking around for his phone he spied the mangled mess on the road a couple of feet away and groaned. Forcing himself into a sitting position his head throbbed as much as his knee did and thankfully one person helped him sit up on the gutter.

But still the berating came. "Who's going to pay for my cleaning bill? It's ruined." She reefed off her jacket and tossed it at him. "Where you at? Which District?"

"21st Mam." Adam grabbed the jacket and held it up to indicate he'd take care of it. "I'll sort it out."

By the time Kevin arrived, after seeing the commotion it took him a second to find out what was going on. "What's going on Bro?" he asked Adam.

"This man threw his coffee at me." He was reliably informed.

"Come on Ruze." Atwater sniggered. "Why you do that?"

"I clearly didn't mean it." He pointed to the lump he could feel on his head.

Kevin switched into gear and preceded to schmooze the victim of Ruzek's crime as only he could. They ended up buying her lunch, agreeing to dry clean her jacket and hand deliver it back to her house and give her a lift home. Or at least Kevin assured her that that's what Adam was going to do. "You know, he's really a pretty good guy. Probably looking at a video of his kid because he loves her so much. I've told him to watch where he's walking but he's not learnin."

As they hobbled back to the car, with his shattered phone in one hand Julia, as they now knew her continued to fawn over Kevin and ignore Adam. "Here, let me get the door." Adam offered when they got to Kevin's car.

"I am quite capable thank you." She hissed at him.

Kevin smirked at him. "Of course you are." He winked at Julia. "My Mumma always raised me to be a gentleman." He nudged Adam out of the way. "She'd turn in her grave Julia if she saw me not helping a young lady like yourself into my car."

She took Kevin's hand and allowed him to help her into the front seat while Adam was left to the back seat.

They dropped Julia at home and Adam stayed in the car while Kevin walked her to the door. Adam had been told many times his input wasn't required so he sat in the back and sulked all the way back to the District while Kevin laughed hysterically from the front seat.

"Ruze, man, what the hell?"

"Shut up Kev."

Now it was Kim's turn to laugh when Kevin explained his run in with Julia. Even Voight managed a rare chuckle. "Now Julia was sweet as, but she had a mouth on her like a sailor on leave and a mean swing."

"I should charge her with assault a Police Officer."

"Really?" Voight queried, highly amused by it all.

"She hit me with her bag." He rubbed his shoulder. "I swear it's got bricks in it."

"I would've hit you too." Voight muttered. "Go get it checked out."

Adam tried to blow it off, he was fine but Voight insisted he needed medical clearance to come back to work with a head injury. Kim went with him because he couldn't drive until cleared and if he needed to be dropped at home she could do that.

"Are you okay?" Kim did ask seriously when she helped him into his jeep. They'd come to work in the one car that morning after dropping Mack off at school. He rested his head on the headrest and closed his eyes. All he needed was an Advil and a coffee.

"Yep. This feels like overkill."

Kim ignored his complaint. It wasn't even as if she didn't agree with him because she never wanted to get checked out either. Nothing ever good came from it. It was a massive over reaction and no doubt she was going to hear about it for days. "Did she really hit you with her bag?"

"Three times."

He rolled his head to the side as Kim tried to supress a giggle. "What?"

"You got beaten up by an old woman. That's kinda sad Adam."

He was never living this down. "She caught me off guard."

Despite his whining and insistence that he was fine he was sent home for the rest of the day, both for the whack on his head and the swollen knee which he needed to stay off. Kim grinned the best she could, he was going to be such a man baby about this and as he reminded her several times already his phone was in pieces and tech would need to get him a new one. "Can you call them and pick it up?"

"I'm sure it will be on your desk tomorrow."

"What the hell am I supposed to do before then. What if the school calls? If Mack has an emergency, of if you do?" He sounded a little hysterical. Life without a phone wasn't a pleasant thought for either Adam or anyone in his path. Boredom made him unbearable. "Or work needs me?"

"The school will call me, or the Nanny, everyone knows where we live if I need you, which I won't and you are not working today. Lie on the couch, watch TV or sports or something, like you do every Sunday night. It's not that hard."

"Easy for you to say. You aren't stuck at home, alone, all by yourself with a head injury and unable to walk…."

"Adam Ruzek, no wonder Julia hit you." Kim held up one hand to stop him speaking. It was going to be a long day and night. "I'd do it myself if I had a bag."

"Be careful Burgess, I won't be able to climb the stairs to my bedroom, so you know what that means." He winked playfully. "Hey roomie."

"No."

"Yes."

"No."

Makayla just about melted down when Kim picked her up from school. Adam was supposed to pick her up to take her to soccer practice. One thing they knew she did like was routine, if something was out she worried. Managing that was one of their challenges but as long as she knew what was going on it was okay. If things changed they usually called ahead and gave the teacher the heads up so Makayla wasn't surprised and she could process the change. "Where's Adam?"

Kim took her bag from her shoulder and nudged her towards the parking lot. They hadn't had the chance to call ahead this time. "He's at home." Kim smiled. "I'm taking you to practice then we'll pick up pizza on the way home, how does that sound?"

"Cool." Makayla climbed into the car. "So why isn't Adam here? He loves soccer practice and the coach really likes him. He runs around and picks up all the witches hats and balls."

"He had a little bit of an accident at work."

"Oh goodness." Makayla shrieked. "Is he okay? Is he gonna die?"

"No, he's not. He has a bump on his head and a sore knee, that's all." Her mother assured her. It still shocked her some days how extreme Makayla went, but then again this kid had been through a lot in her short life. "He's fine."

Makayla was keen to get home as soon as practice was finished. She would've just skipped it all together if Kim had let her and finding out that they couldn't call him from the car was a little dramatic. "Because his phone was broken and he's waiting for a new one."

"Oh, he's not gonna like that." Makayla had him pegged. "This isn't good is it?"

Running through the backdoor she had tears in her eyes as she flung herself onto him as he lay on the couch with his leg propped up. "Are you okay? Are you hurt? What do you need? I was so worried."

"A hug."

Makayla promised to hug him all night long, and she didn't lie. She smothered him with love and attention, bringing him ice packs for his head and knee, holding his water bottle for him and giving him a foot massage. Adam drew the line when she offered to help him to the bathroom when he needed to pee. "It's okay Sweet cheeks, I'm pretty sure I can handle this myself." He kissed her forehead. "Thanks though."

By the time he returned she had puffed up the pillows, refilled his water bottle and was perched on the edge of the couch waiting for him. "Was it okay? No blood?"

Clearly she'd overheard them one too many times when Kim first came home from hospital and was still experiencing some bleeding and developed a mild kidney infection. Adam often asked her about any bleeding when she came out of the bathroom and they were surprised that Makayla picked it up

"It was fine sweetie, no problemo. My job is done." It was sweet and intense and her concern for him going back to work the next day was lovely. She offered to stay home from school to make sure he was feeling better and she was a little concerned about Adam's insistence that he was going back to work today.

Once they'd dropped her off at school Kim finally laughed as Adam sighed. "She's sweet, but intense."

"Oh you loved it."

"I did. You could learn a few things from our daughter."

Kim assured him that she had. One thing she had learned was that she had ears like a bat.

She'd also learnt that black handbags on Adam's desk were really quite hilarious.

Just something small to hopefully blow out some cobwebs. I do have a couple of stories in the works, they are just proving a little challenging to knock into shape & finish off. Hopefully I will get one of them finished soon so I can share.
