"Come on, Sus…come on baby, breathe for mommy" Julia cried as she continued doing chest compressions
William whispered a prayer as he held his daughter's hand, "please God, don't take our little girl from us"
A few seconds later she finally cried and began breathing, "thank God" William said and let out a sigh
Julia checked her pulse and lungs, "pulse is good now, breathing is steady, but we need to keep a 24 hour watch on her, Rebecca"
Rebecca nodded, "what happened, Dr. Ogden? Why did she stop breathing?"
Julia shook her head, "I don't know, but I assume she was seizing."
"But she is breathing now, which is good" William said
Julia nodded, "William, since she is steady for the moment, would you go home and get her an extra blanket and doll?"
"Of course, and I'll bring the picnic basket as well"
"Thank you." she said and kissed him on the cheek
As William got home, he immediately got Susannah's blanket and doll, and placed them on the table. He went to open the closet, took out the picnic basket and made various of Julia's favorite foods and headed back to the hospital.
As he got back to the hospital and headed to Julia's office, he entered quietly and saw Julia sitting down rubbing Susannah stomach.
"How is she?" he asked
"She just woke up from a little nap, we finally got her temperature down with Tylenol"
"That's good, where's Rebecca?"
"Went to the clinic's kitchen to get her some broth."
"If, you want Julia, I can feed her, so you can eat something. I made your favorites"
"I'm fine, William"
"Julia, it's almost 9:00, when did you eat last?"
She sighs, "I don't know, maybe noon?"
He gives her a look, and places a sandwich with a cup of tea on her desk, "please, eat."
She finally gives in, and sits at her desk and eats the sandwich.
When Rebecca returns with the broth, "thanks, Rebecca, I'll feed her."
"Ok, thanks, Detective. I have to attend to a patient" she says and places the bowl of broth onto the desk and runs out of the office.
William feeds Susannah spoonful's, of the broth, as he looks over at Julia and sees she fell asleep, which makes her chuckle.
After Susannah finished, he places her back on the bed, covers her up with her blanket, and tucks her doll beside her, rubs her belly as she falls asleep. He shortly falls asleep beside her within minutes.
It was morning, when Julia woke up at her desk and saw William holding Susannah's hand, while she slept. It was the most precious thing she had ever seen.
Then came the afternoon, William, Julia and Rebecca took turns, giving Susannah, Tylenol, broth and other fluids, which helped.
As Julia rubbed Susannah's stomach and sang her a lullaby, Rebecca went to check on the patient from last night. While William went to the kitchen to make Julia a fresh cup of tea, when he saw Ellie sitting on a bench.
"Ellie?"
She looked up, "Detective. How is Susannah?" as she stood up
"She is doing better"
Ellie does the sign of the cross, "thank the Lord"
"Indeed. But I think it's best, Julia doesn't see you"
"I understand. I was hoping to talk to you"
"Oh, about what?"
"I was curious of why, Dr. Ogden had that outburst with me yesterday?"
"Oh, why she went frantic?"
"Yes, and fired me?"
William nodded and breathed out, "you know Julia and I have been married for now 8 years with Susannah being our only child together…"
"Yes"
"In our first year of marriage, Julia had 5 miscarriages"
"Oh…I…didn't know"
He nodded, "she doesn't like talking about it…but then we adopted a baby boy. But then found out his father was alive and gave him back."
Ellie began tearing up, "that must have been hard on both of you?"
"Yes" he said and rubbed his forehead, "it hurts to this day…then 2 weeks later, Julia found out she was with child. But the next day miscarried again. It wasn't till 2 years later, she got pregnant again, but we lost our little girl at 18 weeks"
"You knew you had a girl?"
He wiped the tears from his eyes, "Julia wanted to see her. We named her Mary after my mother"
Ellie began counting, "that means, Susannah didn't arrive till 4 years later?"
"Yes, that's why were very protective of her…she's our miracle"
"That explains so much of certain things." Ellie said as she fiddles with her gloves
"Yes, and Susannah is going to be our only child together, because we found out recently Julia can't have more children"
Ellie nodded, "I understand, completely now. Thank you for the explanation"
"Well, I should get back to Julia. But thank you for coming by, Ellie"
"Thank you for updating me on Susannah"
"Your welcome, and just wait it out, ok and I can convince Julia to give you the job back"
Ellie nods and waves goodbye as she leaves the clinic.
William heads to Julia's office, with the cup of tea still in his hand, and places it on the desk, "Ellie was here, wasn't she?" Julia said as she holds onto Susannah's hand as she sleeps
He looks at her, and nods, "yes"
