Ethereal Plane

I open my eyes to the sight from the beginning of it all, The Ethereal Plane.

"Field Operator, You have died once more. Though I must say, your end was quite the heroic one."

'I died again, but I can't remember the feeling of dying. Did Lide do this? ...It doesn't matter, I need to go back to save them.'

"I'm sorry if this comes off as rude, but is that all you have to say? Because if it is I don't really have the time for chit-chat."

"No need to be in such a rush my dear Operator. Time has stopped moving since you have died. We have much to discuss."

Making myself comfortable on the ground, I motion with my hand for him to continue.

"I must apologize. When I first sent you off, I didn't really explain anything. I will do so now... If you hadn't noticed, the world of Re:Zero does not have Subaru Natsuki in it, correct?"

"Yeah?" I don't really get the point of mentioning the obvious.

"This only happened due to outside Interference. In a way to counteract this I have sent you to replace him, in a sense. Expect this to happen in future worlds as well."

"If all I'm doing is replacing them, Why can't you just bring them back? I mean, you can bring me back to life. Why not just do the same to them, right?"

"I'm afraid that's not possible."

"Why not?"

"They have not died yet. I believe even if they did die, I doubt I could bring them back."

"What?! Aren't their worlds under your control?"

"Their worlds? Yes, but not them. That is why I have you working under me. Those benefits you have are only there because you and I are connected. Their souls were not connected with me, that is why I have little to no control over them."

"So? What is it that you want me to do?"

"Bring them back to their respective worlds by any means necessary. Do that and I believe this will be fixed. Gather companions to help you on your journey, you will get strong eventually. For now however, you must surround yourself with those stronger than you in order to survive."

"That's everything, right? All this information is giving me a slight headache."

"One last thing before I bring you back, I will be giving you a temporary enhancement to your overall body and abilities everytime you are brought back to life."

"Temporary? How long does temporary mean?"

"Roughly Twelve hours... give or take. Now, that is all. I will be bringing you back, get ready for it."

"Alright! ...Ready!"

Bottom Of The Cliff

"Haah!" I loudly gasp for air, as if I had stuck my head underwater for too long. Not long after I regain my breath, I throw up my stomach acids. Having not eaten anything since lunch.

'Fucking Roswaal, he's the whole reason I'm even in this mess to begin with.' I wipe my mouth and look around.

I briefly scan my surroundings, after the all clear, I check my body out for any injuries.

'Right Arm? Check. No Hole in my Stomach? Check. Beating heart? Check. *sigh* It's so nice not being dead.'

"Now, how do I get back up?" That cliff is too high to climb up, maybe there's a way around?

"Hey Lil buddy do you know the way back? ...Lil bud? ..Oh right, he's not here." This just got a bit more lonely.

'Guess I'll just wing it then.' I head in a random direction, hoping for the best.

~Break~

'Is that what I think it is?' After passing through some bushes, I start to see lights.

"It's the mansion! ...wait, no it's not. It's... Rem!" The lights I had seen earlier were in fact not lights, they were actually ice stakes that were reflecting the moonlight.

'Woah, Miss Rem is going on a killing spree with these Wolgram.'

"Get down, you idiot! Or are you trying to die?!" I'm suddenly tackled back down behind the bushes.

"What the hell?! Ow, you're heavy." I see a certain pink haired maid laying on me.

"If you wanted to die so eagerly, you should of just said so." 'Man, these oni sisters are too scary.'

I quickly separate myself from her and start bowing my head down. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Please don't kill me."

'I have had about enough death for one lifetime. But knowing my luck, this isn't the last time I die.'

"In fact... shouldn't you be dead?" Huh? How does she know that?

"Where did you hear that from? I'm alive and kicking if you couldn't tell."

"Lady Beatrice was informed by your spirit of your 'death'. After that Rem woke up and ran here to avenge you, honestly... Just what did you do to my sister?" Her tone exasperated.

"Hey! Don't blame me just because your sister is less of a stick in the mud than you. Actually how is it even my fau-"

"DIE! DIE! DAMNED BEASTS!" I'm cut off by Rem's loud yell.

"We should probably do something... I'm not sure if she'll last all that long, if they keep coming at the rate they're coming out."

"Oh? And what do you suggest we do? Mister Know-it-all." She says almost mockingly.

Ignoring that. "I say we split up. I distract the Mabeasts, while you help out Rem and snap her out of that berserk-state." I come up with a quick plan that leaves me doing the more dangerous job.

"Alright, I'll go along with your plan for now ...Just don't die, got it?"

I keep my mouth shut not wanting to make her mad and get to position. After a while I see Ram in a tree behind Rem a couple dozen feet away. I make the first move.

"HEY! I killed your boss, so come and get me!" They took the bait. Whether they understood me or saw me as easy prey, it didn't matter. I get the feeling it's the latter.

"...Ren?" It seems I snapped Rem out of it as well. That'll give Ram an opportunity to get themselves out of here.

"Fura! Is that all you got?! Fura! " Why is there so many? "Fura! Fura!" Like really? The amount that keep on showing up is getting really annoying. I use Spells and my daggers to take them out.

After 25 minutes of wave after wave of Mabeasts coming to get me, they finally call it quits and retreat.

"Phew..." I let out a small sigh and lean on a tree, trying to catch my breath. 'There's no time for me to relax. If Elsa is here, she might be watching us.' I stand up and head towards Rem and Ram in a light jog.

I finally arrive to the spot where Rem was fighting. There I find a sitting Ram holding an unconscious Rem, surrounded by the corpses of a few Mabeasts.

"You alright down there? Or do you need a hand?" She's obviously not fine considering she's breathing a bit heavily. 'Must be Mana Exhaustion.'

"I-I'll be fine. Y-You can carry R-Rem, I'll b-be right behind y-you." I'd believe you, if you weren't having such a hard time talking.

I pick up Rem and put her in a fireman's carry. "I'll make sure not to drop either of you."

"Huh? What do you mean either-" Once Ram is standing I put an arm around her waist and pick her up, carrying her under my shoulder.

"Hey! What do you think you're doing? Put me down, you fool!"

"I'm sorry, but I can't do that. You're too exhausted to even stand, let alone run. Murak, Murak." Casting one for each of them, making them weightless.

"So, Which way is home?"

~Break~

"How long can you keep this up for?" Ram finally speaks up, after a while of silence.

"I'll be fine, You should worry more about yourself and your sister." Honestly? Physically, I'm fine. Mentally is another story however.

"How about you? Did you run out of mana?" I ask, more than anything trying to ease my nerves.

"Yes, I ran out fighting the Mabeasts that didn't go after you." She says, her breathing more normal than before.

"Sorry, I don't really make for the best Mabeasts bait... If you want I can give you some mana through your horn, like I did with Rem."

"...Hmph, You're lucky to even touch me, so don't push it." She scoffs at the Idea, but I get the feeling she considered it.

"Alright then." I feel Rem start to shift around after a while. "Looks like our sleeping beauty has finally woken up."

"W-Where am I?" Rem finally says something after shifting a bit more. "We're currently on our way out of the forest, so try not to move so much. Wouldn't want you falling off and getting hurt."

"Ren?! How are you-"

"Alive? Well you see, I've recently learned that I can survive a fatal wound to the stomach." I'm obviously omitting the fact I died, but it's probably for the best they don't know that... yet.

I start to hear sniffling from Rem. Based off her glare directed at me, I'm guessing Ram also hears it. She stays silent however, leaving me to deal with it.

"Rem? Are you alright?"

"I-I'm just so happy, that y-you're alive." 'Since when did I trigger her flag?!'

"Just what did you do to my sister?" Ram asks again.

"I already to you, I haven't done any-"

"Ren! Behind us!"

'What now?' I look back and all I see is a purple blur. '...Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit. Why can't she just leave me alone!?'

"Listen you two, try to land on your feet. I'll hold her off!" I grab their weightless bodies and throw them forward. Quickly turning around to block the attack from Elsa with my dagger.

*Shatter* *Shink* My dagger breaks under the pressure of Elsa, and in turn I fail to block the attack correctly. "Gah! El Fura!"

My attack creates some distance between us. My left arm however being rendered useless. 'I'd probably be missing it if it weren't for the enhancement.'

"You've improved since we've last met. You truly are quite the prey." She says licking the blood off the Kukri knife. Somehow making it look extremely attractive. 'I'm not one to stick my dick in crazy but God damn ...Well that's if she doesn't stick her knife through my gut first. My stomach has gone through a lot.'

Getting a closer look at her, I notice a wound on her side. It'll probably heal if I don't make a move soon. "What've you been up to Elsa? I doubt your here to profess your love for me... unless?" I try and distract her.

"You're afraid, aren't you? That's why you're acting so confident." It didn't work, thought as much.

'She's not wrong, I'm afraid, Terrified even. I can't show it though, she'll just see me as weak and kill me instantly.'

"If I really was afraid, would I do this?! El Fura! " ...And she dodges it. Man, today is just not my day. "Vita!"

"Oh? What's this? I suddenly feel much heavier than before. You are just filled with surprises." Her interest in me rises more and more, unfortunately it's not the good kind of interest. "Then you'll love this surprise."

I didn't really want to have to do this, Fire and Forests don't mix all that well, or maybe they do depending on who you ask.

"Fell Goa!" I summon a destructive Wind and Fire storm. While strong, it pales in comparison to the original. 'I'm really sorry for copying you Julius, but I'm kind of in a bind right now.'

"Grk! Damn, My gate can't handle two different elements at the same time." I can barely even breathe anymore, standing to fight back isn't even an option. All I can do is sit there hoping I somehow got her with my attack.

"Truly a valiant effort, It's quite unfortunate but it seems our dance will be cut short. I will try and make this enjoyable for both of us." It seems my last ditch effort was for naught. 'My last ace up my sleeve, and she comes out with light burns and small cuts. Talk about pathetic. Damn it, not again. I don't want to die.'

Those were my last thoughts as the embrace of death welcomed me once more.

Ethereal Plane

"Field Operator, you seem to be in a bind of sorts, do not worry. Start once more, there is no shame in failure, there is only shame in giving up."

I am destined to restart once more.

Forest

"Ahh... You truly were beautiful. It's a shame you did not grow to your full potential." I hear Elsa moan out. 'Damn sadistic bitch.'

"Vita." I quickly activate Vita on Elsa to buy as much time as possible. "Oh? You're still alive? Despite the fact I made your death as fast and painless as possible? Are you perhaps like me?"

"Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm nothing like you." I start to stand with the same brave face from before.

"EL Shamak!" ...And quickly backtrack on said bravery. 'Gotta run, Gotta run!' I run towards the mansion, filled with only adrenaline to keep me going.

I know the Shamak and Vita won't hold her for long, but I didn't have any other choice. After a little over a minute of running, I start to hear something approaching from behind.

Trying to ignore what's behind me I focus on what's ahead of me. In front of me I see lights moving around. This time I hope It actually is someone else instead of the mansion.

Once there, I find myself in a small clearing, in that clearing? Everyone from the Emilia Camp excluding Roswaal and Beatrice. They're all standing next to a dead Boss Wolgram.

"Everyone! Get ready for a fight!" I quickly get next to everyone and start to prepare myself.

"But Ren! Your arm it's..." Emilia wears a concerned expression on her face as she sees my left arm.

"Don't worry about me right now! Elsa is here! I need you ready for an attack." I start focusing, trying to summon as much lesser spirits. Specifically Water spirits, in hopes of making a deal with all of them.

8 Water spirits show up. 'Hey Lil guys, are you guys interested in a deal? You guys heal my arm and in exchange I'll give you lots of mana.' I convey my deal to them, they seem unsure at first. Until one agrees to it and the rest follow suit.

We start to hear rustling from the bushes I came from, and out comes Elsa. Her face stoic, her cold as ice.

"El Fura!" I can't let her get close, even if it hurts to even cast a spell.

"For you to be able to come back from death, Just who are you?" Elsa asks me in the most interested tone I've ever heard from her.

"Me? I'm-" I'm cut off by a voice from above.

"Bowel Hunter Elsa Granhiert, For yooou to intrude on myyy territory, you muuust be quite braaave." Of course it's Roswaal.

"I see, one against five is hardly fair, I'll be making my retreat. Ren? Was it? Keep your bowels nice and healthy." She quickly runs away from a fight too difficult to win.

If I had to guess, Roswaal showing up meant her job was over. "Cutting it real close there, Lord Roswaal."

Mathers Manor

Everyone else had gone to bed, Roswaal and I had stayed so that I could explain what happened.

"All of thaaat happened while I waaas away? I thank you fooor saving my staff ooonce again, My dear Ren. The least I caaan do is give yooou another reward of yooour choosing."

"Thank you, Lord Roswaal, but before that. I'd like to get some rest, today has been rather tiring."

"But of cooourse, we shall continue this conversation later."

~Break~

"Talk about exhausting, how did Subaru even have enough energy to do all this?" I was too tired from today's events, my energy at an all time low.

'At the very least I won't have to worry about a sudden attack any time soon. It'll be around a month until Arc 3 starts. More than enough time to get strong enough to beat Petelgeuse. The Whale is a different story however. Future me will worry about it.' Once I finally make it back to the servant quarters, I open the door to my room. Expecting to be alone, I start to take off my clothes to shower before bed.

Having already taken my shirt off, I see a certain blue haired girl in the corner of my eye. We catch each others eyes, maintaining eye contact for a solid ten seconds before she looks away embarrassed.

"So, uh.. Miss Rem, What can I do for you?" I cough into my hand to grab her attention.

"I-It's fine, Rem wouldn't want to bother you after a day as tiring as today." She's right, I am tired, but I don't really have it in me to refuse her.

"I don't mind, you can say whatever you wanted to tell me."

"Then, Rem wanted to ask, Why did you risk so much just for Rem?"

"I did, didn't I? I don't really have a definitive answer, but if I had to guess, it's because I would have been sad if you were gone."

"How can you say that, when we've only known each other for five days?"

"It's because I find you to be very admirable. When we first met you asked me what my intentions were with Emilia. Back then, that showed me despite your cold exterior, that you cared about others. There's also how hard you work, even Ram and I's workload pales in comparison to yours. So, Um.. What I'm trying to say is that despite how long we've known each other, it doesn't change the fact that you're someone worth risking my life for." God... that was probably really corny... but I still meant it.

"Do you really mean it?"

"Of course I do." I'm suddenly enveloped in a hug by a crying Rem. Her murmured 'Thank yous' being drowned out in my chest. The only thing I could do was hug her back and comfort her.

~Break~

"Rem is sorry, if Rem hadn't been bitten, you wouldn't had have to risk your life. Rem truly is a burden on you and sister." ...Oh right, she has a inferiority complex.

"I've never thought of you like that, Rem. I'm sure Ram would say the same."

"You're wrong! Rem is sure that sister hates Rem! After all, it is Rem's fault that sister lost her horn. If Rem wasn't so weak then that should of never have happened." Wow, it's really bad.

"Maybe your right... but it doesn't really matter now, does it? It's already over and done with, those feelings of guilt you have are pointless. Ram would never want you to feel this way, neither would I."

"How would you know?! In order to replace what my sister lost, I must carry all of her burdens!"

"Replace? Just because you sister lost her horn doesn't mean she can no longer do things like before... Let me just say this, you shouldn't try to be Ram or her replacement. I believe you should try and be Rem. While I can't say to have met the Ram from before, I still like the you from right now more than Ram from now." Also Ram likes clowns and that's weird.

"Rem didn't mean to yell, Rem is sorry." She apologizes with a small bow of her head.

"We both got pretty heated, so I'm sorry too." I apologize as well, with a awkward head scratch.

"Rem must be going now." She says heading for the door.

"Goodnight then, Rem." I say back.

"Yes, Goodnight." She leaves, I'm finally left alone in my room.

After waiting a few seconds to make sure she's gone I head towards the toilet to release more stomach acid. 'I died twice, and all I can really feel is neutral about it. What the hell happened to me?'

Our boy is finally done with Arc 2! I'm gonna start working on arc 3. However I want to know if yall want memory snow or not. If you do it'll be a interlude of sorts. Hope I didn't completely butcher Rem's character.

Fell Goa - Experimental at best, weaker than the one casted by Julius' spirits by a lot. Still destructive enough to destroy a couple trees.

None - Lost his contract when he died.
