Ch. 1 The Kiss that Changed it All
(CLARE)
"Okay Mom," I sigh when the text notification goes off. I huff at my phone as though Mom can hear me. As she's at home and I'm at Adam's she didn't of course, but Adam, Drew, Eli, Bianca, Katie, Owen and Dave did.
"Guess that means you have to go home?" Adam asks.
"Yeah, family dinner so I can give Mom my opinion on floral arrangements," I reply. At the end I let out an exasperated sigh that's big enough to fluff my bangs and I roll my eyes.
"I have to head out too, you want a lift, Clare? It's still pretty hot outside," Owen offers.
"Yeah, thanks," I nod. I'm in no rush to go home but walking in the humid heat doesn't sound appealing either. "I'll see you tomorrow, Adam, bye everyone." I hug Adam and wave to others before grabbing my purse.
"Later," Owen waves before we leave. When we're in the car I text Mom that I'm on my way.
"You know, it's completely unjust that Jake dumps me at prom and then runs off to the cabin. He doesn't get in trouble for it, isn't told to come home, he just gets to disappear for the summer. Meanwhile, I'm stuck here, and Mom is forcing me to take part in almost every decision for the wedding as though I care. Jake doesn't even fight for us, he just runs and who knows what or who he's doing up at the cabin," I rant when Owen starts driving.
"Did you really like Jake that much?" Owen asks.
"Yes," I reply instantly and defensively and then deflate a little, "no. Not really, not as much as Eli, but more than K.C. still it would have been nice if Jake had fought for us a little. He dropped us so easily; we didn't even talk about it and now he's gone all summer. He'll get over me with some bikini clad girl at the lake, while I spend all summer at Adam's."
"You know, instead of bitching about it you could find a guy and get over Jake," Owen remarks. I giggle and he looks at me cocking an eyebrow. "You think that's funny?"
"No, it just reminded me of something Jake said. Right after the dance and Eli's car crash when Jake and Glen first moved, he was with me and helping me get over Eli. Jake said the best way to get over someone was to kiss someone new."
"Well, he had a good point, kiss someone," Owen shrugs.
"Easy for you to say. I'm sure you could easily kiss just about any girl. I'm sure Drew can do the same, if I were Alli, Bianca or Jenna I'd find a guy and just say "Hi, mind if I kiss you?" only I'm not that kind of girl," I say as Owen pulls up to my house. I realize I didn't even have to tell him where to go. "How'd you know where my house was?"
Owen clears his throat and rubs the back of his neck before answering. "Fitz, he pointed it out a couple of times, wasn't hard to remember because I don't live that far."
"Oh, how's he doing? I haven't seen him at The Dot recently."
"If you see him let me know, no one has seen him in a couple of months. He worked at The Dot through March break and then put in two weeks notice, and just vanished. No one's seen or heard from him since March."
"That's too bad, I hope he's okay. Well, thanks for the ride, Owen," I comment as I reach for the doorhandle.
"No problem, and Clare," Owen says.
I look back at him, he leans forward, his hand cups my face and he crushes our lips together. I grip his shirt parting my lips, his tongue slips between my lips and caresses mine. His mouth on mine sends this electric tingle through my body. My breath hitches in my throat while my heart begins to beat faster. His hand slides from my cheek to the back of my neck while his tongue probes my mouth. After a moment he pulls his lips away and I release a breath. Owen's eyes stay locked onto mine, his hand caresses around my neck again, resting at the front of my neck and his thumb brushes my lower lip.
"Don't let Jake being gone get to you. Trust me he's not worth it."
I have no response, all I can do is blush, bite my lower lip and slip out of the car. I wipe the smile from my lips before my mom asks questions. Yet, the kiss with Owen keeps my mood bright through an agonizing dinner. I can't stop thinking of the kiss and even dream of kissing Owen that night, this may present a problem.
As I have done for nearly the past month, since the morning Adam got released from the hospital, I get up after Mom leaves for work. I eat breakfast and walk to Adam's before it's too warm. The Torres house has always been a sort of hub, but since Adam was shot at prom (officially making it the worst night ever) even more so. Especially for those that, like me, don't have summer plans. When I arrive, I find Katie here, hanging off Drew as usual, and Eli is here. I smile at Eli; we're walking a delicate tightrope of friendship again. Though, the only time we've spent together so far is with Adam and others at The Torres house.
"How was dinner?" Adam questions.
"It was okay, though I didn't really pay attention to the floral arrangements. Pretty sure I just pointed at one," I remark, and the others laugh. "I'll just be glad when this whole wedding is over. Though I don't know how happy I'll be to have Jake back," I sigh.
Eli pats my back sympathetically just as Owen comes through the door. At the sight of him I intrinsically bite my lip, thinking of our kiss last night. My dream of kissing Owen comes back to my mind and my cheeks flush. I look away from Owen, looking at my hands as Owen greets Drew and says hi to the rest of us. Owen and Drew turn on the video game system and start playing. Katie huffs because Drew is ignoring her, while Adam, Eli and I are kind of watching the game but also talking.
When Bianca shows up Katie demands Drew's attention, by stealing his controller and then they go outside to fight. Bianca takes Drew's controller and Owen makes it four player giving the other controllers to Eli and Adam. Now I have nothing to do but watch them play. Although Adam isn't doing very well one-handed. Drew and Katie either makeup and disappear somewhere or storm off separately, because at some point I realize they are not out back any longer. They don't return at lunch and aren't even home a few hours later when Mom texts me to be home for dinner.
"I better get going, Mom wants me home for dinner," I sigh when she texts again that she's on her way home.
"I can give you a lift Clare, I need to pick my brother up and you're on my way," Owen offers.
"Uh, sure thanks," I reply slowly. I wonder if he's making an excuse to leave with me or if he actually needs to leave to pick up his brother. I didn't even know Owen had a brother, but honestly I don't know all that much about him.
"I should probably head out too," Bianca comments.
"I'll stick around, at least until Drew gets back," Eli says.
I hug Adam goodbye and we say goodbye to Eli. Bianca waves to us before getting in her car and taking off. I get into Owen's car and we're silent for the first couple of minutes, when the silence becomes uncomfortable, I break it with the first thing that comes to mind.
"You know, for how much you hassled Adam you've been hanging at his house a lot this summer, even when Drew isn't around."
"I felt really bad about hassling Adam, it got out of hand fast. I always did act without thinking though. I don't have much going on this summer and do want to be there for Adam but Drew also asked me to be around to play referee between Bianca and Katie."
"Yeah, that's understandable, Katie has her claws dug in deep to Drew and she gets pretty petty about it any time Bianca shows up," I remark and then there's a few more seconds of silence. There's something I need to know though, so I take a breath and broach the subject. "The kiss last night, did you kiss me to prove a point or because you wanted to?"
"Both," Owen smirks, "and I liked it in case you were wondering."
"I liked it too," I smile and then my smile fades into a frown, "but a relationship would be bad. I'm not over Jake, and not in a good place for a relationship. Not to mention still figuring out things with Eli. Also, my friends would freak out."
"I don't want a relationship right now either. Things were great with Anya, but she left for the army, and I haven't heard anything from her. She's probably forgotten about me, but I'm not entirely over her," Owen admits as he pulls up to my house, "but what about friends with benefits?"
"Doesn't that generally mean sex? I'm not giving you my virginity," I state flatly. I've been told my whole life to wait for marriage. When my parents divorced because my dad was having an affair that belief started to crumble. It entirely disappeared when I overheard them argue early one morning, back when Mom and Dad were still sharing the house and he hadn't decided to give up custody and completely move in with Elaine. Dad told Mom he was never happy with her, and he wouldn't have been tempted by Elaine if Mom had satisfied him in bed. I wasn't waiting until marriage, but I wasn't just ready to let go of something so precious either.
"It doesn't have to mean sex, you set the pace. Your mom thinks you're walking home, right?" Owen asks glancing at my house.
"Yeah, I didn't tell her I had a ride," I reply.
"I can be a bit late picking up Tris," Owen comments as he begins driving again. Guess he really was picking up his brother.
"Uh, where are we going?"
"My house it isn't far. We can discuss rules there, I'll show you how to get to my room, there's a private entrance to it. That is, I'm assuming we're keeping the whole thing secret if your friends would freak that we went on a date."
"Yeah, secret would be best," I nod. A moment later we pull up to a house and Owen parks in the driveway. I follow Owen out of the car and around the back, he opens a back door and we come into his room.
"It doesn't have to go any farther than kissing, I'm happy to just have someone to make out with and that kiss was pretty electrifying. If you feel the urge or I do, we contact each other and get together as soon as possible. If you ever want to do more than kissing then know that I'm here, and I'll make sure it's a safe and pleasant experience for you. As I said though, I'm more than happy to just make out," Owen tells me, and I bite my lip. I have to admit it's an enticing offer.
"Okay, that all sounds good. How do we contact each other though? If we exchange numbers someone could see."
"We can use a messaging app on our phones, something that allows us to use screen names instead of real names. Something we don't already use, that way if there's a notification in it, we know who it is, and can be careful about opening the app around others."
"Clever," I grin.
We both look on our phones and I find an app that looks good. Owen looks at it, agrees and so we both download it, choose names, and add the other to our contacts. We are able to mark ourselves private so no one else can randomly find us.
"I should get you home, and pick up Tris," Owen says after sending me a message in the app to make sure it works.
"Yeah, just one more caveat to this deal. This may sound funny seeing as we aren't dating, but I want to be exclusive. I mean I don't want you fooling around with other girls. I won't do anything with other guys either. If one of us wants to get into an actual relationship with someone else, then we end this."
"That was two caveats, but I can agree to both of those," Owen nods.
"Good," I smile letting out a breath I didn't know I was holding.
"Now, just one more thing before I get you home," Owen remarks with a smirk. He stands up, combs his fingers into my hair and crushes our lips together. His tongue slides over my lips requesting access and I grant it, parting my lips for him. His tongue slides in, caressing my tongue, his hand gripping the back of my neck and my waist. I grip his t-shirt, standing on my tiptoes to meet his lips. We both let out a breath as we simultaneously pull away. "Okay, let's get you home," Owen replies.
We go back out to his car, and I wear a secret smile the rest of the night thinking about Owen, our kiss and our new friends with benefits deal.
(OWEN)
"Come get some food kids," Mrs. Torres says poking her head in the basement door.
It's Saturday, it also happens to be Canada Day and the Torres family is having a BBQ at their house. Audra invited some people from the school board and some neighbors. Omar invited people from his office. Aside from myself, Bianca, Katie, Marisol, Julian, Eli, Dave, Wes, K.C. and Clare are all here. That's pretty much all of Drew and Adam's friends considering Connor and Jenna went home for the summer, and Alli is at science camp.
So far, the adults are all outside and us teenagers have escaped the humid heat by staying indoors. The younger kids, from the neighborhood or kids of people that work with Audra and Omar, are playing games outside. The only unfamiliar kids inside are a couple preteen girls that have tried to flirt with almost every guy. I forget their names and whether they are neighbors or not.
"Stay here Adam, I'll bring you some food," Drew tells his brother as we all get up.
Adam and his friends have been sitting on the sofa, the rest of us on the floor or chairs. I watch Clare get up off the sofa, as her summer dress which is somehow both sexy and demure falls into place at her knees. It's sky blue with pink roses on it, buttons up the front and seems to accentuate her breasts. You can't see her generous breasts, just a salivating peek at a tiny bit of cleavage. As soon as she walked in wearing that dress though all I've been able to think about is ripping the dress off of her and taking her breasts in my hands. Teasing her nipples with my tongue, kissing every inch of each breast.
Not that I've actually seen her breasts, we've been friends with benefits for two whole days, and all we've done is make out. I managed to leave with her and take her home yesterday, spending twenty minutes making out in my car down the street from her house. Dave is taking her home today, he brought them all too. That isn't stopping me from thinking of her breasts or hoping I can find a way to get her alone.
I don't get my chance for over four hours, it's almost time for fireworks and I'm starting to think I won't get her alone. I go inside to use the washroom before the fireworks start, I find the downstairs one occupied, so I go upstairs. Clare is leaving the washroom as I'm coming up the stairs and deciding this is probably my only opportunity, I bound up the last few stairs, take her hand and pull her into Drew's room. I sit on his bed, pulling her into my lap, combing my fingers into her hair and circling one arm around her waist as I clasp our lips together. Her lips part for me automatically and I smile into the kiss. I would happily stay here kissing her all night, but I know we can't stay long. Eli or Dave or Adam is bound to come looking for Clare before too long. When I hear the fireworks going off, I break the kiss with a deep sigh.
"I wasn't sure we'd get another chance tonight," I tell Clare and she smiles. "I want to keep kissing you, but you should probably get out there."
"Yeah, they're going to wonder where I was as it is," she nods.
I snatch one more kiss from her lips and stand up putting her on her feet. Peeking out the bedroom door to make sure no one is around I usher her out and she goes downstairs. I use the washroom before joining the others outside. I don't really see Clare the rest of the night, after the fireworks she goes inside with Adam and their friends. I stay outside with Bianca, Julian, Drew, Katie and Marisol, but Katie stayed because of Bianca and Marisol stayed for Katie. Clare leaves a short time later with Dave, K.C. and Wes.
She might be gone, but she stays on my mind the rest of the night. I think about her on my drive home, when I'm in the shower, when I get into bed. I have trouble sleeping because I'm thinking about Clare. I'm tempted to message her, to ask her to come over and make out with me on my bed. It's almost two in the morning though, she may still be awake, but I'd feel bad about asking at this hour. Plus, I'd likely have to sneak her out and back in, something I don't think Clare has much experience with. Which means the possibility of getting caught by her mom and maybe Glen. I know he's been sleeping some nights there.
When I finally do fall asleep, I have a sexy dream about Clare, about her sitting on my lap as we make out on my bed. Her shirt disappears revealing her wonderfully beautiful breasts and she begs me to touch her. It's just a dream but it feels real, I wake up extremely horny and dying to see Clare, to kiss her and have her on my lap. I doubt she'll get topless, but I will be extremely happy to hold her and kiss her if that's all I get. I grab my phone and send her a message through the app. We chose names appropriate to the other person's interest. Just in case someone ever does see the app it would make it that much harder to know who we're messaging.
Vampire Boy: Can you meet me this morning?
I wait anxiously for her reply, it feels like it takes an eternity. It was less than a minute, but the fact that it felt like it took so long shows how much I want to be with her.
Hockey Honey: You can come over. Mom and Glen are gone all day with wedding stuff and dinner with friends.
I smile, message back that I'll be over shortly and hop up to get ready. I still park a couple houses down from Clare's to be safe. If her parents do come home, I can always say I'm picking her up to go to Adam's. Checking myself in the mirror one more time I get out of the car and ring her doorbell. She answers the door wearing yoga pants and a loose shirt, it hangs off one shoulder and shows her bra strap. This does not help the fact that I've been thinking about her breasts since last night.
"Hey, come on in," she smiles stepping aside to let me in. "Are you hungry? I was just making pancakes."
"Starved, but I'd rather devour your mouth. I've been thinking of kissing you all night," I tell her. She bites her lip as her cheeks go scarlet red.
"Eat now, kiss later," she remarks grabbing my shirt and pulling me toward the kitchen.
"Mmm, it's hot when you're demanding," I grin.
"OWEN!" She squeaks tossing some flour at me. It gets on my shirt and Clare giggles.
"Alright, alright, I'll behave until after breakfast, what can I do to help?"
She tells me where the plates and silverware are, and I set the table. Then she offers me coffee and asks me to get out the syrup and butter. I am hungry and eat four pancakes and outwardly behave myself, even though inside I'm having thoughts about ripping off her clothes. At least, I behave myself until we're done eating and she starts to clear our plates. I have a small puddle of syrup left on my plate and I dip my finger into it before Clare takes my plate. She stands at the sink turning on the water, I come up behind her dragging my finger along the nape of her neck and leaving a small trail of syrup behind.
"Owen," she giggles and kind of squeals. After sucking my finger clean of the remaining syrup, I lick her neck clean of the syrup. Clare sucks in a breath and goes still. Clasping my lips over the largest pool of syrup on her skin I suck, and she moans slightly. It's a small mewling moan, but it makes my dick twitch. I don't suck hard enough to leave a hickey and clean the rest with my tongue.
Before she has time to think I swoop her into my arms, carrying her to the sofa and setting her in my lap. I brush my hand into her hair, cradling the back of her head. My other hand resting on her hip, her arms linked behind my neck and our lips join. I could do this all day, even with my erection strained in my jeans, which I do my best to keep her from feeling. She's moving a little on my lap creating some friction and if we do this long enough I will just cum in my pants. Our lips stay connected until we both get text notifications; she breaks the kiss first to grab her phone, so I release her and look at my phone.
"It was Drew, he's asking if I'm coming over because it's awkward with just Katie and Bianca," I tell her.
"Adam wants me to come over too. I need to clean up and change, I'll walk over when I'm done," she replies.
"Not in this heat, you go change, I can clean up and I'll give you a ride over. We're leaving from the same place anyway. If they ask, I'll say I saw you walking there."
She smiles and we both reply to our friends. Clare runs upstairs and I go into the kitchen to start cleaning, all I can think about though is the next time I'll have Clare alone.
(CLARE)
"Drew let's go to the beach," Katie whines again, "it's so beautiful out!"
It's been two weeks since Owen and I made our friends with benefits arrangement. We've been meeting about once day since to make out. There have been a few days in the last two weeks where either he or I couldn't meet up. Usually, though, we don't actually meet up because we're already at the Torres house together. In which case when Owen takes me home, we drive somewhere decently secluded and make out in his car before he drops me off. After a few days of Owen offering to drop me off on his way home everyone got used to us leaving together. They're used to us coming together as well as Owen usually picks me up to save me from walking in the heat. No one has any suspicions about our relationship or un relationship I suppose.
It's mid-July and the summer heat and humidity have kept us all cloistered inside. Dave, Eli, and I are here playing Settlers of Catan with Adam. Katie showed up an hour ago, but Drew and Owen have done nothing but play a video game since just about the moment Owen and I came in. Aside from Katie wanting Drew's attention I'm sure that the fact that Bianca, currently working her community service, will be off in nearly an hour and likely come here, is part of what's making Katie so anxious to get Drew out of here.
"It's too hot Katie," Drew replies.
"We'll be at the water. I have a new bikini," she says in a flirty voice.
"What about Adam?" Drew asks.
"We'll hang out with Adam, don't worry," Eli says. Though he seems to mostly just want Katie gone.
"See, Adam is fine. We'll pick up Marisol and Owen can come," Katie grins.
I didn't really expect Owen to hang out if Drew wasn't here. Yet, my stomach drops a little at the thought of him going. I can't help but glance at him when Katie says his name.
"I have some extra board shorts; you feel like the beach?" Drew asks sounding more defeated than excited.
"Sure, always down for honeys in skimpy swimsuits," Owen says with a grin.
My stomach drops again, it's not jealousy really, and we're not in a relationship. We just make out, secretly make out. And it's not as though I wasn't aware of Owen's reputation when we began this little arrangement.
They turn off the video game and go upstairs, Katie goes into the washroom with her bag so she must be changing. The three of them leave a few minutes later. The four of us finish our game sometime later, Adam wins but I come in a close second.
"So, what do you guys want to do now?" Adam questions.
"You know, the beach does sound kind of good," Dave remarks. "Cool water, hot girls, we can stop and get some ice cream, cold drinks."
"I wouldn't mind a swim in the cool water," Eli agrees, and all the guys look at me.
"Sure, the beach sounds good," I respond looking at Adam.
"It would be nice to get out of the house. I have some board shorts you two can borrow but we'll have to swing by Clare's house," Adam replies.
"No problem," Dave grins.
Adam, Dave, and Eli go upstairs to Adam's room, they all change and return downstairs a short time later. We get in Dave's car, and he stops at my house, I run upstairs changing into my one-piece swimsuit and putting on a summer dress over it. I grab a towel and sunscreen as well and return to Dave's car. We stop at a store on the way to the beach for a tub of ice cream and cold drinks. There are several beaches in Toronto so it's entirely possible that we won't end up at the same beach as the others. However, when we park at the beach, I see Owen's car is here, still it's a long beach.
We take our stuff and walk down to the sand, finding an open spot to lay out our towels. Adam brought sunscreen too and we start getting that on. Eli volunteers to get my back before I can ask Adam or Dave. Then Dave gets out the ice cream and we start digging in with our spoons. I eat the ice cream, savoring the coldness of it when it hits my tongue, and the tingling mint flavor as it slides down my throat. I'm just thinking my next spoonful will be my last when a boy misses a frisbee and falls at my feet, kicking up sand on me.
"Sorry about that beautiful, I got distracted by those lovely legs of yours," the guy says. Even with sunglasses on I know Adam is rolling his eyes and Eli stiffens beside me.
"Does that corny line ever work?" Dave asks.
"Also, she's with three guys, how do you know one of us isn't her boyfriend?" Eli questions through gritted teeth.
"One of these geeks your boyfriend?" The guy asks and Eli clenches his fist.
"No, just friends," I reply.
"Then why don't you come hang with me and my friends," the guy suggests holding out his hands.
"Thanks, but I came to the beach with my friends and I'm going to stay with them. I'm sure there are lots of other girls in skimpier swimsuits you can use that line on," I respond. The guy shrugs and runs off again, Eli lowers his sunglasses to look at me.
"You know there was no way we would have let you go off with some random guy on the beach," Eli comments.
"Eli, you know me well enough to know I am not that impetuous," I reply. Impetuous enough to make out with Owen, yes. Impetuous enough to go with a mildly cute guy hitting on me on the beach, no. "I'm hot, I'm going in the water. Come with me Adam," I assert standing up.
"I'm good," he shakes his head.
"Adam," I fake whine tugging at his good arm, "I'm only going in up to my knees, come on."
Adam sighs but gets up, Eli and Dave come with us. We can see our stuff from where we are, and we left wallets and all that in the car. After splashing in the water, we return to our towels for a short time, and splash in the water again. None of us really go swimming, but it feels good to be in the cool water.
"I'm starved, let's grab some food," Adam says walking out of the water.
"Yeah, I'm hungry too, and Mom isn't insisting I come home for dinner," I remark.
"There's a great pizza place up the road," Dave suggests.
We start packing and dry off, rinsing our feet before we get our shoes back on and back in Dave's car. He takes us to the pizza place and as soon as we come in, we see Drew, Owen, Katie, and Marisol. We decide to eat together, and then split up to get everyone home. Dave takes Katie, Marisol, and Eli since they live close while Owen takes Drew, Adam, and me. Technically, Drew and Adam were slightly out of his way, but closer than it would have been Dave.
"Do you need to be home, or do you want to come to my place for a bit?" Owen asks when we're alone in his car. "I've been dying to kiss you all day."
I bite my lip and feel my cheeks blush, "Let's go to your place."
