The ride in the Quinjet to the Avengers Mansion was extremely awkward for Jason, as he was given little information regarding the circumstances of his new body. Thankfully, Yelena Belova and Kate Bishop remained predominantly silent throughout the trip.
It was a little disconcerting to think that he was a genetically synthesized human that was meant to be occupied by the Green Goblin of all people. A mix between Peter Parker and Rogue Anna-Marie. In hindsight, because of his headache hadn't been able to notice the difference in strength he had wrapped tightly in his body. Despite being a lot younger than he had previously been, he felt exponentially more powerful physically.
He had been relieved when he found out that neither Peter nor his new Half-sister expected him to be literal family to them, but would still be looking out for him, and supporting him however he believed was good for him. He supposed that was to be expected, the both of them were the pinnacle of Superheroes, selfless till the very end. They were the last people he would have expected to place undue pressure on him, on top of his already confused state.
He had made it clear to them that he did not remember anything from before his awakening in the lab, apart from his name. And while he had lied, he did not want to reveal his transmigration to anyone if he could help it.
"I will need to run some blood tests on him. I need to make sure that he is perfectly stable, considering that he has full consciousness, thoughts, and emotions, I want to make sure he doesn't have any risks of destabilization and genetic disintegration. I also want to run a telepathic and neural scan, so that we can make certain that the Green Goblin didn't insert any triggers in him that would activate should he have failed as he did." The woman, May Parker said as they arrived at the Avengers HQ. Peter and she had been quietly talking among themselves, sneaking glances at Jason who had been taking in the view of the city as it flew by underneath them, the morning sun giving it a very serene and majestic golden hew.
He had no problems with the blood test, but the telepathic checkup had his nerves on edge. He did not know whether that would expose him as a transmigrate, but he had no choice but to comply.
On stepping out of the jet, he followed May and Peter out, and he was greeted with his first sight of the Avengers Mansion and its surrounding area.
The granite landing pad of the Quinjet, led into a stone paved path surrounded by well-groomed bushes dotted with bright flowers. The path twisted its way by the large flowing river that eventually fell into a beautiful misty waterfall, on the other side of the river were large coniferous trees, of pine and white spruce trees. Behind him, as he noticed Hawkeye and the Black Widow get into step with him, he could see another much larger vessel parked, with strange inscriptions on it. By the size, Jason assumed it was a passenger ship, that carried at least a capacity of ten thousand souls.
Noticing the look that Yelena was giving him, as he observed his surroundings, he continued following his two guardian Spiders to the compound.
The compound itself was a massive structure of glass and marble. It was sleek and modern in design, facing the mists of the waterfall, but Jason could see the tree cover on the other side of the building, hiding it away from the view of the public eye. It was a rather secluded location, though the skyline of Manhattan was visible through the mist of the roaring waterfall.
As the company made their way inside the compound, Jason and the spiders were separated from May's rescue parties, as the two women departed for a debrief and to their rooms.
"Dad, why don't you wait in the lounge for a while, I will complete the standard tests for Jason here, and we will join you there," May said to her father indicating the room on one of the upper floors from the courtyard they were in.
Peter nodded at her "Okay, but could you hurry it up a little? I want to talk to you, about your mother, in private." He said and made his exit as he walked up the stairs to the right of the compound, going the same way the two black widows had just headed towards.
"Follow me, please. This won't take much time." She said to Jason finally, who had been silent for the entire walk from the Quinjet till now.
Jason followed her as she led him to a lab using the elevator on their left. Jason could feel as they descended deeper into the compound, having mistaken the lab to be on the upper floors as well. His nerves were steadily increasing, and by the time they were in the large white room with various medical equipment, he was sweating a little.
May led him to a leather chair and asked him to remove the coat he had taken from the Oscorp lab, as she attached a few sticky electronic pads to his torso.
"These are to monitor your vitals," and then she turned and went to the intercom at what he assumed was her workstation based on the name plaque on the white ceramic table.
"Riri, I need you in the lab in five please." She called and turned to him "As I stated before, this will be a very simple blood and tissue sample test. And then I will need you to head into the room to your left. That's a psionic station, as well as a full-body MRI. We want to be as thorough as possible; I don't trust Norman's work at all."
"I understand, and thank you, for looking out for me," Jason replied as he tried to show a little gratitude to the brunette.
It was then the doors to the lab slid open, and a tall black woman wearing a white t-shirt underneath a blue zipper jacket, black pajamas, and slippers walked in.
"How did you know I was up?" She questioned the brunette, and Jason could see dark circles underneath her eyes. "I could have been asleep. And you! I just saw the distress signal, what the hell! Why are you in the lab?"
"Riri, I know 'you'" May replied, rolling her eyes "You never sleep. Well, not for more than three hours at least. And please, like you have any grounds to judge, I have had to pull you out of this lab by force after several missions, heck I remember you started working on that AI of yours with a knife stuck in your thigh!"
Riri snorted, not giving any reply to her accusation, and then smiled as she approached the woman and pulled her in for a kiss.
Jason felt a little uncomfortable watching the two women kissing in front of him, and it seemed that May's mind caught up to his presence as well, and she reluctantly pushed Riri away.
"And now all the sleep's gone away! Thanks, Luv!" Riri said cheerily.
"Really? Did you not see the dude strapped into the chair right there?" May asked sarcastically, her embarrassment getting the better of her for the moment.
"Oh, psshh! Two girls making out, that's basically heaven for a kid like him." Riri rolled her eyes, as she turned to face Jason. "Isn't that right?"
Reluctantly, Jason nodded.
"That's my brother!" May exclaimed.
"Brother?" Riri turned to her incredulously "What the hell are you talking about?"
May filled her in on what happened quickly, as she gathered her syringes and other equipment, to begin testing.
"I see, I told you that the emergency beacons would be handy. Anyway, let's see if your half-brother is going to melt on us or not" Riri commented as she entered a more professional mode, and started managing the computers while May extracted Jason's blood, and placed the vial into a chamber by the wall.
"Please don't say that. That is a horrible possibility to think about. I am still young." Jason shuddered.
"Well, don't worry. May and I will have it all checked out in no time." Riri tried to reassure him. "Natalie, what do you have for me?"
"The blood test has been rendered, Riri. The synthesis of this body is perfectly stable. There are no signs of genetic disintegration. Based on the codon sequence, the process used to synthesize Mr. Jason is the perfected genetic cloning technique developed by Miles Warren, the Jackall. The subject contains a heavily purified form of Spider-Serum, on par if not more than both Peter Parker and Miles Morales. And there is a potential mutant gene, though it hasn't been activated. Based on the reports by Ms. Parker, his DNA is a perfect XY genetic combination from Peter Parker and Rogue Anna-Marie." A disembodied voice sounded from the speakers in the lab.
"Thank you, Natalie. Jason, move to the psionic chamber please." May requested once she parsed through the data, and was certain of the findings. "And Natalie, would you be a dear and destroy the blood sample? We don't need it anymore."
"Of course, Ma'am." The voice, which Jason presumed was an AI replied.
Steeling his nerves, Jason did as he was asked.
He had taken a seat in the center of a large semi-spherical hall. It was dimly lit, by large blew light panels that covered the curved walls of the room, at least they seemed like lights to him. The door to the room was the only perfectly vertical surface of the room. And even that was covered with similar light panels on the inside, he noticed that when the door slid shut behind him.
Jason couldn't see anything on the outside of the room, and that worked even more towards his gradually shaking nerves. He reverted to an old calming technique he had learned to tackle such situations in the field as a spy. Taking a deep breath, he looked to where he guessed the two women were on the outside in the lab and nodded. He believed that there will be a few cameras in this room to monitor anyone inside it.
Soon enough, Riri's voice sounded clear in the room from some hidden speakers, which if Jason's guess was to be considered accurate, were below and around his metallic seat.
"Okay, Jason. Relax, and close your eyes, the lights that you see around you will brighten to a degree and while it will not be blinding, it will cause a lot of discomfort to your eyes. You will feel a prickling sensation behind the bridge between your eyes and the back of your head. That will be May, who will have a somewhat invasive access to your mind. This is solely to look for any triggers or control mechanisms that Norman Osborn may have placed inside your head. Don't worry, it will be done in five minutes." Her voice said.
Little did she know that it only worked to even further rattle him, for he had no wish to reveal the knowledge he had brought along with him after his transmigration.
But he had no choice but to comply, as he had no way of refusing the check without outright antagonizing, what he believed was probably the most powerful group of individuals on the planet. He did not want to say no to the Avengers, he did not fancy the idea of fighting his way out of their base, or having them hunt him.
Steeling his nerves again, he closed his eyes just as he saw the pale blue lights on the walls around him turn a clear yellow, and he leaned back in the chair. Within a few seconds, he felt, what he would later describe as pinpricks along his temple, and between his eyes, he also felt a light heaviness in his head. But both these sensations were so mild, that had he not been actively looking for the feeling, he would have never felt it.
And a moment later, he heard a voice from inside his head.
It was Spider-Girl.
"Relax, Jason." She said "I can feel you're nervous. You have no reason to be, I already know most of what happened after we met, and I only need to look for information from before my dad found you. If it helps, I cannot enter the astral plane or directly into your mind, there is just a connection between our minds, and I can use it to parse through your memories. If you had any practice in blocking telepathy, I would not have been able to see your memories in this machine, without an actual telepath. And we've not had one of those on earth in a while."
That was a little comforting for Jason, and at the same time, it was informative and alarming. While he hadn't expected malicious intent from her when she was sifting through his memories, he understood where she was coming from. She did not yet know why he was so nervous, and she could feel his nervousness and a little fear in waves as dominant emotions in his head.
"Okay, you will see everything that I see, so brace yourself, this may be a little discomforting." She said finally, as she felt his nervousness wane.
It was not a second later, that Jason felt a more powerful prickling sensation between his eyes, and around his temple. The heaviness in his head increased a little more, though he still needed to exert conscious effort to keep feeling it.
The force continued for at least half a minute, and for some reason, Jason felt as though May was straining herself and the device that she was using. But the strain subsided eventually, and Jason was beginning to see visions even though his eyes were still closed. And try as he might, he could no longer open his eyes.
The visions started with the memory of him inside the tube, in Norman Osborne's laboratory. He saw him experiment with his tube, changing the liquid and temperature, he was submerged in. Though, he had no true recollection of it at all. The vision shifted and one by one, the other tubes in the office that he was incubating alongside him either died or burst through their tubes and exploded. Finally, only two remained.
One was him, and the other was an exact replica of Norman if only a lot younger. He heard the original converse with the clone, in hushed tones and then watched the clone leave, while the original chuckled and refocused his attention on Jason.
"Well, now. The plan is almost complete. He will be here, in a couple of hours, but by then I will have taken everything from him, and you my dear shall be by vessel into the new age!" The old man sneered, as he gazed almost lovingly at Jason. "The perfect vessel to destroy everything that – Spider-Man!" he spat "stood for. Utter destruction, at the hands of his own son!"
Jason subdued a shudder at the look he was giving him, even though he knew the man was dead. Then the vision shifted, and Spider-Man arrived. He tried desperately to stop the Green Goblin, and save Jason, as he prepared to switch bodies. He wondered why the machine was showing him these memories, and not memories of his past life. And at the same time, he breathed a sigh of relief.
Though he wouldn't have minded if May knew about his situation, he would rather no one ever know. He did not need the extra attention that people were bound to give him if they knew the knowledge he possessed, sparse though it may be about the world he had found himself in. It was still a form of power he wished to dearly cherish, and guard for however long he could. Yet, his curiosity was piqued, he had no idea why the memories of his previous life were not on display. He was grateful for his fortune, but he was ever the more curious about the reason behind it. He would not merely consider himself lucky, for he knew he was here not because of luck, but because he was put here by someone. Why? He did not know.
After a while, the visions faded, and darkness returned. Jason's eyes were still closed though he knew he had regained the agency to use his eyes.
"Okay, Jason. You're clear. The door will open in a few seconds and you can come out." May's voice sounded again, and he could hear the tiredness that was laced in it. Evidently, using the machine had taken a toll on her.
Opening his eyes, he had to blink a little to adjust to the light in the hemispherical room, dim as though they may be. And with a lighter heart, and a more hopeful step than before he made his way out of the chamber.
When he stepped out, he could hear Riri and May conversing with each other, in hushed tones though he could hear everything they were saying.
"-no triggers were found. You should give him the green light." Riri was saying quietly.
He saw that May was seated in a chair, and there was a red and gold tiara on her lap. Sweat covered her forehead, and she was panting slightly.
"I know, I need to ask him what he wants to do from here on out," May replied, and then she turned to look at him, as she noticed him walk into the laboratory. He picked up a spare T-Shirt, with the Avengers Logo on it, and wore it to cover his previously bare torse.
"Jason, I have asked Natalie to prepare a room for you in our mansion for however you may need. We can talk about your situation later, Natalie will guide you to your room." Riri said, and her tone made room for no arguments, she wanted some time for May to rest, she had been working nonstop for a while, and she needed it.
"Riri –" May began.
"No, May. Plus, we have Lilandra and her people, alongside Nikki and the Xandarians to worry about today. This can wait." Riri replied sternly.
"Hypocrite" May grumbled, and Riri smiled nudging her with her shoulder.
Jason did not mind some rest himself either, he needed to get his thoughts in order anyway, a private room for him to relax in is exactly what he needed. Saying his thanks to the two women, he followed the path that Natalie illuminated for him on the upper floors of the mansion to his room.
"I've taken care of it, she's being airlifted out of Crotonville and will be here in our facility by sundown. I think, it's better if we bring her here, so we can monitor her better, and give her better care. May, Natalie, and I will look after her." Riri said to her girlfriend's father, who was looking better rested than earlier that morning when they had arrived at the Avengers mansion.
Jason was resting in his room, where he had decided it would be worth it to brush up on recent history using the internet. He also wanted to catch up on a small nap.
"I-I suppose, if MJ is being moved here, I will stay on." Peter sighed, and took a sip from his coffee. The bitter taste did nothing to lift his spirits, but the caffeine was something he had built a habit to rely on when he was stressed and MJ wasn't around to help him work it out. "Thank you, Riri. Though I wish you'd taken a small rest too, the dark circles are visible under your eyes."
Riri smiled bitterly, ever since Nadja, her best friend slash emotional therapist from high school died, she had become something of an insomniac. Her work as Iron Heart had become something of an excuse to not sleep, but ever since she'd begun dating May, the habit was waning away. Though, it had reared with a vengeance lately, ever since the news of Galactus' coming had reached Earth. "May said something quite similar, but I find sleeping incredibly boring. Either way, we have a meeting this afternoon with the dignitaries from the alien refugees. I was hoping you would attend the meeting, Steve would appreciate it. He feels alone, being the last of the old guard. A familiar face will help him, and us as well."
Before Peter could reply, a third voice commented "She's right, Pete. Steve would be delighted to have you working with us once again."
Peter craned his head toward the voice and saw the tall form of his old student Miles standing in the doorway. He was wearing a standard military officer uniform, the medals shone brightly on his chest. His years of service, both as an avenger and as Spider-Man had worked significantly towards helping him build a good career as a Marine liaison from the Avengers. He couldn't stop the smile that bloomed on his face, upon seeing him again, and he rushed to envelop him in a hug, who chuckled accepting the warm gesture.
"Miles!" He said releasing him from the hug "It's been so long since we met, how is Phin?"
"She's fine, Pete. She just graduated from MIT and misses her uncle Pete a lot. You should come over for dinner. Cassie and I will cook turkey tonight." He said as they walked back to Riri who was watching them with a smile.
"I-uh, I'll think about it, though maybe after this whole Galactus thing is behind us," Peter replied.
"You'll be at the conference, won't you? What Riri said, she is right. We could do with someone from the old guard helping us out." Miles asked.
"Yeah, I'll be there. Well, as long as I am not needed by my family at any rate." Peter replied.
"This include the kid that's sleeping upstairs in the room beside yours? I read the debrief before coming here, your life is still just the same isn't it?" Miles asked pointedly.
"Yeah, him too. The least I can do is look out for him, in whatever it is that he wants to do. I don't know if he will take me as a dad, or May as a sister, I am pretty sure he won't, he's gotta be confused if anything. But, I will be there for him." Peter replied.
"Never change Peter, you're a good man. Call me if you need help, with anything. Okay?" Miles said, "I need to overlook the relocation of the alien refugees, I'll talk to you later then."
Saying that Miles took his leave.
"I am glad that you're staying for the conference. Let me get you up to speed with the whole situation." Riri smiled at Peter, who nodded.
Jason woke up in a few hours, well-rested and refreshed. He had dreamt peacefully, a first in a long time. His last peaceful dream had been before his long undercover assignment in Russia had begun. The room he was given was comfortable enough to help him doze off into blissful sleep without any issues. The bed was softer than anything he had slept in yet, the white linen-lined sheets were comfortable and provided him the warmth that could easily be associated with home for him. He was adjusting to life in this new world quicker than he had anticipated.
Stretching himself on the bed, he looked out of the window to his right, at the river outside the mansion, and the trees beyond. The Manhattan skyline was visible more clearly than what it had been that morning when he had arrived. The mist from the morning dew, and the waterfall had waned significantly, and the noon sun illuminated the skyline almost majestically.
He had spent a few early hours after his check-up, pondering over the results of the telepathic treatment he had undergone. He had thanked his luck then, but the fear that a power he did not yet know had meddled to protect his mind did not help ease his fears. He had elected to distract himself then by gathering information, as he was wont to do during any of his nerve-wracking assignments.
He had used all possible resources that were available to him. Using the computer provided to him by Natalie, he had managed to gather information rather easily.
The Avengers were facing a threat, in the order of magnitude he hadn't ever deemed possible. Galactus, a celestial responsible for the destruction of a significant portion of the universe to quench his unquenchable hunger. Upon searching for the keywords 'Reed Richards' and 'The Fantastic Four' he had found that both Reed and his wife were dead, having died recently in space. There were protests in the streets, people were accusing the Avengers of being non-transparent with the information they were provided with. He wondered whether Reed's death meant that the Ultimate Nullifier was lost too, but he dared not search on an untrusted network like here in the Avengers tower. Natalie, their AI, had access to everything he searched, or so he assumed, and he did not want to explain how he knew of a weapon so powerful that it could scare Galactus of all people.
What was interesting was that there were Alien refugees on Earth, and there was to be a meeting in the very compound he was residing in, to determine the Avenger's plan of action. It was not going to be televised, unlike many other Avengers conferences, but Jason didn't mean for that to hinder him from at least eavesdropping on it. He did not want to be left out of the loop, especially given that the issue they were going to discuss was going to potentially discuss a matter that could potentially be apocalyptic in nature, should Galactus go unhindered. He had no desire to die so early, having reincarnated only recently, at least without doing whatever it is that he could do to help out.
Getting freshened up, and dressed in a clean set of clothes he found ready for him in the cupboard, he went down and out for a jog. It was around noon, and the sun was high in the sky, glaring at the earth below.
It was on his third lap of the compound grounds when he spotted someone watching him quietly in the shade of a small tree by the river. He could make out clear blue skin covering, and fiery red hair. They were dressed in a light brown jacket and green jeans. The color seemed to have worked well in camouflaging themselves with their surroundings.
When he approached the silent observer, they said "Isn't it a little late to be jogging?"
"Oh, yeah it is. I would have loved to jog in the morning. But, uhmm, I was a little preoccupied then, so I thought that now was a good time as any." He replied. "I am Jason, by the way. Jason Elessar."
The woman scrutinized Jason for a while, looking for something. Jason did not know whether she found it, but before she could reply, a tiny yet gravelly voice sounded right beside his ear.
"I am Groot!"
On his shoulder, was a small wooden creature, it had two small legs, two hands, and a face all made of wood. A type of wood, he did not recognize. But, the creature was easily identifiable to him.
'Groot! Does that mean the Guardians are here too?' He thought, surprised at the little guy's presence.
"That's the first time Groot has willingly interacted with anyone…." The person said, perplexed. Whatever judgment they had for him before was clearly forgotten. "I am Nikki. Nikki Rel-Quill." She introduced herself.
"Groot hasn't taken a liking to anyone, not since..." Nikki trailed off. "Anyway, he likes you. Jason Elessar right?"
"Yeah," Jason replied, not paying attention to her, he was more interested in the little wooden figure pulling at his T-Shirt sleeve, as he dangled his feet off Jason's shoulders.
"I have never really seen you at the compound before," Nikki said, grabbing his attention, and Jason could recognize the question behind it.
"Oh, I came here with May, Spider-Girl," Jason replied, as he took a seat beside her in the shade of the sun. The sweaty T-Shirt clung to him, a little and the cool wind from over the river that flowed under the tree would help him dry off for a while, before he could head back in to shower. "I haven't been here before."
"Oh, you're what? Her son?" She asked.
"No, not her son. I guess you could say her brother. I am technically a genetic clone of her father stabilized using a female mutant's genes. It's weird." He replied, scratching the back of his head.
"The number of weird people I have met over the years surprises me. You're rather mild in comparison." Nikki tried to reassure him. "Are you going to attend the conference today?"
That surprised Jason and he said, "I don't think I was invited, are you?"
"Oh, yeah. I will be representing the Xandarian refugees, today. It's not much of a dignitary meeting, it's more of a war council. And seeing as you can fight, or have abilities of your own, they'll probably not bar you from attending." She said, and then she looked fondly at Groot on his shoulder. "Plus, Groot likes you. You're his first friend, since… well, since me. If you're worried about being permitted, just stick by me. I'll get you in."
Nikki's only reason for helping Jason was Groot. The little fellow hadn't interacted with anybody except her, since the Guardians sacrificed themselves alongside the Nova corps so that the rest of the refugees could escape to Earth. Groot had witnessed his father's death, and his first conscious memory was the forceful and traumatic severance of the connections that Flora Colossus saplings have with their parent tree. All Flora Colossi cherish that connection, and to sever the bond forcefully is one of the most horrible feelings they ever experience.
Groot's socializing with Jason was a good step for him to heal, and she did not want to bereave him of it.
"Thank you, Nikki," Jason replied, he no longer had to worry about sneaking around to eavesdrop on the meeting. While he would have managed, if he had really wanted to, this worked in his favor. "I should go and take a shower."
"Okay, I'll see you in the lobby this afternoon then." She replied, and extended her arm for Groot to take. The little fellow reluctantly latched on to the arm, as he realized his new friend needed to leave. He hoped that he would meet him in the future.
"I am Groot." He waved sadly, as he watched his friend take his leave and walk back to the mansion.
After taking a cold shower, Jason stayed in his room, spending a lot of time just reading what few books that had been left for his leisure. He was especially enthralled yet again by the Lord of the rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. And that also established that the pop culture and art of this world were not so different from the ones in his previous life.
The only major difference was in the comic books, there was no Marvel comics. But that was understandable, though he did find a neat little nugget of information when he looked that up, the company that produced toys, and merchandise about the Avengers, was called Marvel.
It was only around early afternoon, that he prepared to head to the lobby and find Nikki and Groot. Dressing as good as he could with what he had in the cupboard of the room he had been assigned, he left for the lobby.
He found her waiting for him in the Lobby, just as she had promised. She was now wearing a bright yellow and blue leather uniform, with an orange falling star emblazoned as a logo on the crest. Her fiery red hair was tied down under a tiara, and Groot was perched on her shoulder.
Beside her were similarly dressed soldiers, but they seemed to be unarmed. She was in a conversation with them, and did not see him approaching. It was the cute little fellow on Nikki's shoulder that spotted him first. As soon as he had seen him, Groot immediately brightened. He had been terribly disappointed when Jason had left, and wanted to spend more time around his new friend. There was something about him, that felt right to the little flora colossus. He started waving excitably, as he stood on Nikki's shoulder.
The movement caught Nikki's attention as well, and she turned to Jason as well, and a small smile bloomed on her face.
"Hello, Groot! Did you miss me?" Jason said as he approached the pair.
"I am Groot!" Groot nodded excitedly and leaped onto his shoulder when he stretched out of his arm. Jason chuckled at the little guy, as he watched him crawl along his arm to his shoulder. Evidently, He liked his shoulder better than Nikki's.
"Hello, Jason. Are you ready for the conference?" Nikki asked him. Her amusement was clear in her tone, as she watched Groot settle into a comfortable position on his shoulder.
"Yeah, I am. I hope I won't be intruding though." He said and scratched the back of his head.
"Don't worry. Just stick by my side, and no one will question your presence." She reassured him. "Well, follow me if you're ready then."
Jason nodded and followed in step with her. Her soldiers flanked their sides as a protective guard.
She led him into one of the upper floors of the mansion, using the stairs. On the west end of the mansion, toward the end was a large round room, with a dais in the center. The amphitheater-styled room had enough space to seat at least a hundred people.
Jason spotted May, standing in the center, alongside Riri Williams. Her father, Peter Parker, was seated nearest to her with another old man, that Jason did not recognize. The two seemed to have known each other for a while. There were a few holograms that occupied quite a few spaces, with flags of various countries to signify their designation.
Nikki led him to one of the central chairs designated for them, as the flag by her seat was marked by the logo on her crest. Jason took his seat beside Nikki. Behind both of them was another alien designation, a queen by Jason's guess. She had striped golden black tentacles for hair, and slits for nostrils. Her skin was yellow, but she looked as Regal as only a queen could. Yet, sorrow was evident in her, for sadness and fierce determination shone brightly through her eyes. Beside her was an old man, bulky yet strong in build. He was looking sternly at the council that had gathered around in the chamber.
Jason's attention was then stolen away, as the doors through which his and Nikki's group had entered, were opened yet again, and a singular tall man, in a white and green fur coat walked into the room. His entrance had quietened much of the chatter in the room. Though he did not say anything and assumed the seat that was designated for him.
'Dr. Doom.' Jason deduced from the menacing metallic mask that he was sporting. 'Diplomatic representation? Is it truly him? Or has he sent a doom bot?'
Slowly the entire chamber was filled as people and delegates from a lot of countries and groups walked in the chamber. Jason and Nikki drowned out the chatter, as they engaged in idle chatter, with Groot.
Jason found that she was the leader of the refugee group from Xandar and the Nova Corps. The Guardians of the Galaxy alongside many heroes had died across the universe in the onslaught of Galactus the Devourer. And the grim picture of death became all the more clear to Jason.
Finally, just before the conference was to begin, and the council was to convene, a fiery golden ring slowly formed in the center of the chamber. It slowly expanded, to the size where it could easily fit a single person.
'Dr. Strange?' Jason thought internally.
The portal opened, and out walked a tall woman with flowing black hair and a red cape around her shoulder. The sling ring on her hand was shining with eldritch energy.
"Ah, Emily Bright. The sorcerer supreme. I was worried that Kamar Taj would not be joining us." May said as she shook hands with the woman. "Please, find your seat and we will begin discussions."
Sitting in the front row of the council beside Steve Rogers, Peter watched as his daughter and her girlfriend convened the meeting.
He did not have much to comment on the relocation of the alien refugees. He did not have an accurate account of today's politics and demographics to be of any use in that particular discussion. He was mainly here for the discussions of the preparations of the retaliatory actions that the Avengers and its allies were undergoing.
He did find the plight of the aliens sympathetic, and his heart bled for them, but his mind kept straying to what happened to him earlier that morning after he had arrived at the compound with his son.
[Flashback]
Peter Parker stood on the roof of the mansion, as he watched the morning sun, rise far into the horizon, beyond the skyline of Manhattan. The golden rays of the morning sun shadowed by the silhouette of the city fell on the soft mists created by the waterfall of the river by the mansion creating a beautiful dispersion of light that illuminated the river and the green trees by its banks.
Despite the calm visage that nature produced, his thoughts were clouded by the thoughts of his wife. He hoped to return to Crotonville to be by her side. His daughter had promised him to try and bring her to the mansion, but she was weary and tired from the ordeal with the Green Goblin. He would not begrudge her if she wasn't able to follow through when she had so many things to tackle in front of her. Like her new brother for example.
He was uncertain about that as well. He did not know how to interact with Jason without making the conversation awkward. He had noticed that his son? Was very observant, his analysis of his surroundings, his cautious actions, and so many other habits was very clear to him. Whether they were instinctual or trained by the Green Goblin he did not know. And he shuddered at the thought of the torture that the Green Goblin would have subjected him to, that he developed such a high degree of situational awareness.
His musing was cut off when the light that he had been observing dancing above the mists of the waterfall turned gray, and the water of the waterfall stopped flowing. His spider sense did not flare, so he wasn't on edge for he knew an old friend had come to visit.
"The web is changing Peter." A very soft voice came from behind him, and he let out a sigh.
"Madame Web." He said and turned to face his old friend. He leaned on the ledge of the roof lazily and looked at her questioningly. "You haven't visited me in a couple of decades now."
"I didn't need to. Your duty was done. The mantle had been passed on." She replied.
"Taking Karn's power really did suit you didn't it?" Peter commented as he stared up into the sky at the bird frozen mid-air, with its wings outstretched.
"They have grown on me yes, I can see everything. All that is, all that was, and a little of all that will be." She replied.
Peter looked at her blindfolded face, which had been old and weary once upon a time but had become so full of life and vigor when she faced the inheritors all those years ago.
"Is this about Jason?" Peter finally asked, giving her his full attention.
"Partially." She replied, and she stared at him thoughtfully for a few long seconds "He is change, or rather, things have changed, the entire web of life is changing, and I can't see much. Something is blocking me. But, what I have seen,...….. It's horrifying."
And for a moment, Peter saw her calm visage break, and the stress showed clearly on her face. It was as if, the youth that she had acquired after their fight with the inheritors and Karn was suddenly lost. But, she was quick to reel in her emotions, and the calm façade returned.
"Being the Spider at the center of the web, after Karn, The Master Weaver was killed, I could feel a certain connection to every entity that contained a form of your powers. I had an open window into their reality. And I could see everything much more clearly, into the future. I used those powers to stabilize the Web and monitor the stability of the multiverse through my connections to the individual totems. But as I grew accustomed to my position, and your daughter took her mantle, my vision started to get clouded. I started to feel the separation of the connections the totems had to the web, and I investigated."
She took a deep shuddering breath, as she recounted "Realities were imploding, major calamities were causing entire universes to die. And while that is the inevitable end for all universes in the entire multiverse, the ones that died this time, had not reached the end of their cycle. They are an anomaly." She paused again, took a calming breath, and continued "Just like ours."
That caught Peter's attention immediately, and he was on alert. "What do you mean?"
"Galactus." She said, and she weaved her hand to project an image of Galactus in front of Peter. "His existence is essential to the survival of our universe. Of all universes. He is an egg for the birth of the one that follows ours. He consumes life from Planets, devours them, and uses them to incubate for what will be, beyond what I can see. But, that time has not arrived yet. Something has fundamentally changed in him, something that has accelerated his need to devour everything. And at the same time, he is no longer preparing for the next universe. He just consuming. Absorbing, and the energy is not being converted into the matter for the next universe. Where it is going, I do not know. I cannot glean."
Peter sighed, a pensive look on his wrinkled face. "Do you have a plan?"
"I do." She replied, and Peter saw that she was no longer looking at him. She was gazing at the rising sun, its rays illuminating the river beyond them like a mirror reflecting the blue sky. "At the death of a universe, a void is created in the web, which causes adjacent universes to drift into it to fill the space if a new universe is not birthed. If two adjacent universes move to occupy the space left by a dead universe, it causes them to collide. That causes a domino effect in the web, the multiverse is slowly shattered from within. Generally, the powers that be, isolate a small section of the web in which the destructive domino effect has begun and use the energy released by its destruction to rebuild that portion of the multiverse all over again. They are not interfering now. I have no idea why. My plan is simple at its core. What we need is time."
"In essence, it's a simple ritual. Something that will stop the flow of time in our universe. The key to restarting the flow of time here will be sent out with a volunteer to a universe, that is relatively young in its cycle, and far away from the epicenter of the multiversal destruction, buying them time to investigate and fight against whatever entity is causing the multiversal collapse."
Peter listened again, the gears in his brain working as she explained her plan. It was a major risk. That was certain. But desperate times call for desperate measures.
"Why are you telling me this? You can already peer into the multiverse. You have traveled across the multiverse multiple times." Peter asked.
"When I said my vision is clouded, I really did mean it is clouded. I can only see very little a couple of universes outside of our sphere of influence. I cannot travel that way anymore." She replied.
"Why not get that kid Strange was so fond of, America Chavez I think, to open a cross-dimensional portal?" He asked.
"I have tried. She is... lost. After Strange died she went off on a journey in the multiverse, and her interactions with the web have completely stopped. I do not know where to find her, and neither does Emily Bright." Cassandra Webb replied, desperation clear in her tone. "I fear that whatever is preventing me from accessing the web, to its full potential is also stopping her form of inter dimensional travel as well."
"What do you need me to do?" Peter finally asked. "Why come to me, like you said, I am retired. Why not speak to my daughter?"
"I…..I can't. Your daughter... she's stubborn. Young, naïve. She will not understand. The only person that I believe should be sent on this task... Is your son." And the shoe finally dropped.
Peter straightened his back. Anger bubbled in him. And Madame Webb tried to calm him, but he cut her off.
"He's a kid! He doesn't even know what we're up against. Why him? Of course, May wouldn't understand! She won't send her brother on a journey across the damn multiverse!" Peter said, his calm voice betraying his anger easily.
"Peter, he is the only hope. Before his arrival, there was none. Whatever is causing this, they won. His coming is the only last gasp I could see from the web. It is the only way. From now, effectively I am blind." She said desperately.
Peter's anger did not subside, but he could see that she was being honest. This truly was the only hope their universe had for survival.
"I...I will see what I can do." He finally said and walked away into the mansion.
