The Fowler Anxiety Conclusion
Chapter Three
Penny glanced at her watch, it was 3.30am, they had left to go to the party at 6.30pm, nine hours ago, a lot had happened in that nine hours. Bernadette and Howard had taken the kids back to Leonard and Penny's and settled them down for the night. It had taken the fire service nearly four hours to cut them all out of the car and now they were at the hospital.
"Auntie Bernie" Megan shook Bernadette awake "where's my Mommy?"
"She's at the hospital, sweetheart" Bernadette told her truthfully, there was no point lying to Megan Hofstadter, she was too clever for that "she needed to see if everyone's okay, and to speak to the police"
"Why?" Megan plonked herself down on Bernadette's lap "is she in trouble?"
"of course, not" Bernadette stroked her hair with reassurance "she needs to talk to them about what happened"
"okay" Megan yawned
"now, back to bed cutie pie" Bernadette smiled "Mommy and Daddy will be home before you know it"
Bernadette must've fallen back to sleep because the next thing she knew, Leonard and Penny were home.
"What happened?" Bernadette asked as she woke up "is everyone okay?"
"no" Penny sobbed "Sheldon and Melody are really poorly"
"there's not much hope for them" Leonard finished for her, knowing she wouldn't be able to "Sheldon's in a coma"
"How about Amy?" Howard didn't really know what to say "and the other kids?"
"Amy and Stephen will live" Leonard responded with a little bit of hope in his voice "we don't know about Harmony"
"Have you seen Amy" Bernadette asked Penny "have you spoken to her"
"yes" Penny sobbed again "she feels so guilty, she doesn't know what happened"
Amy curled up in her hospital bed and sobbed, what a night, this time yesterday she had been looking forward to the party, a little apprehensive about what enchanting conversations she would be having with her family, if she was honest, she had been dreading them, but now she'd have given anything to have those conversations
"Mrs Cooper" in walked the nurse, Amy thought she looked tired, years and years of working on the children's ward was etched into her face, and she looked sad, Amy wondered what those eyes had seen, and what they would see in the future "I've got someone to see you"
"Stephen" Amy grabbed her son and sobbed, deeper and yet quieter than she ever thought possible "are you okay?"
"where's Daddy" little Leonard Stephen Cooper was just like his Daddy, brighter than the brightest star in the sky but severely lacking in social and emotional intelligence
"he's asleep" Amy didn't want to have to explain to a five year old what a coma was "are you okay?"
Stephen didn't answer, just relaxed into his mother's chest and cried
Leonard sat down with another cup of tea and handed one to his wife. He had lost count of the number of cups they had drank in the last few hours. Sleep eluded him, every time he closed his eyes, he relived it. The noise of the car crashing into the road, the screech of the breaks of other cars trying to make sure they didn't reach the same fate. Then when he made it to the car, the smell of the blood and the gas, the painful screams of Harmony, the look of utter horror on Stephen's face, Amy's pain mixed with fear and guilt, the silence that radiated from Melody and worst of all, the fact that Sheldon wasn't breathing.
