The Fowler Anxiety Conclusion

Chapter four

Please come and pick up Stephen xxx

Amy's text to Penny was very matter of fact, a few days had passed since the accident and Penny was started to feel a little bit closer to normal, but still couldn't face going back to work. Sheldon was still in a coma, and the twins in intensive care, but Amy and Stephen had been discharged. Now Sheldon's Mom and Meemaw were coming to see them, and Penny had until 6pm that evening to sort out Amy and Sheldon's part of the house and it was almost 3pm. Leonard had helpfully unhelpfully offered to pick them up from the airport, and now Penny had to go pick up Stephen from the hospital.

Will get Leonard too xx

Penny responded before texting Leonard to ask him to do it.

It had been four days since the accident and, apart from the Uber home from the hospital, Penny hadn't got into a car. She was too frightened that she'd be next. Penny hadn't told anyone about this, even Leonard didn't know, she'd been making little excuses in her mind and kidding herself that these were the reasons, for example, Leonard was back at work so he could take Megan to school, he hadn't been at work so he could do the grocery shopping, and now, Leonard was going to the airport and the hospital was almost on the way.

Sure, heading there now xxx

"Not long now" Connie Tucker was Sheldon's grandmother, who was affectionally known as Meemaw, she had lived opposite Sheldon and his family when they were growing up and was therefore very close to Sheldon and his siblings, Georgie and Missy.

"What are we going to do if he dies, Mom?" Mary was Sheldon's mom, she'd been on her own since her husband, George, had died when Sheldon and his twin sister were 14

"He won't" Connie hoped "he'll be fine"

"I don't know what I'll do if we lose him" Mary put her head in her hands "I've been praying for him"

"Me too" Connie promised "and so has Missy and Georgie"

Leonard had called Connie the morning after the accident, the plan was for Penny to call as they had become quite close since Megan was born, to the point where the whole family had started to call her Meemaw.

"Connie Tucker" Sheldon's Meemaw didn't recognise the number that was calling her, normally she wouldn't answer an unknown caller, but this seemed different

"Hi Meemaw, it's Leonard" he could hear his voice quivering "how are you?"

"I'm fine" Connie responded, "everything okay?"

"Not really" Leonard paused to prepare himself "Meemaw, are you alone?"

"No, actually Georgie has just popped in to see me"

"Oh, thank god" Leonard was pleased she wasn't alone, but even more pleased she wasn't with Mary "are you sitting down?"

"Leonard, you're scaring me" Connie gestured to Georgie to come over

"there's been a car accident" Leonard took a deep breath "Amy was going across and someone jumped a red light and flipped their car. Sheldon is in a coma and the twins are in intensive care"

"right" Connie collapsed down onto the chair, she wasn't expecting that, she felt like she had been punched in the stomach

"Meemaw, are you okay?"

"Yeah, Leonard be honest with me, do you think we need to come down"

"yes" Leonard answered "he's stable at the minute, but its not looking good"

"Okay, what about Amy and Stephen?"

"Cuts and bruises, they'll be sent home in a couple of days"

"okay"

"I'm sorry to put this on you, Meemaw" Leonard wiped away a tear "but I thought it would be better for Mary to be told in person"

"You did the right thing" Connie sighed "Georgie and I will go over now"

"Okay, thanks Meemaw, bye"

Leonard put the phone down and wiped another tear away. That had been the most difficult phone call he had ever had to make.
