Kain

Kain woke with a start, grabbing the handle of his great sword. He shot up off the ground and drew the massive weapon. Something was wrong, two things to be specific. One, where was Ronin? Two, why was he in a city of some sort? Kain felt his body tense as he slowly put the sword away. He whistled into the air. The sun was just coming down, so it couldn't have been more than a day since he and Ronin fought those monsters

"Rex, come!" he yelled. There was no bark, no noise, nothing to indicate his palamute was there. He walked out of the alley and was met with the unusual sight of a massive city, one that put even Dundorma to shame. As he walked down the brightly lit streets people stared, it was odd. Most people would know a hunter when they see them, why were they acting so weird. He walked up to a man at a small cart with skewers of meat.

"What do you want?" the man asked. Kain looked at the skewers with some apprehension.

"Do you have any Anjanath Tail?" Kain asked. The man bent down to the cart before slowly rising with a brow raised in confusion.

"An... what?" he asked. Kain's brow furrowed.

"Anjanath? 20-foot tall, monstrous lizard?" the man at the cart seemed to have recognized something.

"A grimm? You can't eat those. Just answer the question, do you want a skewer?" he asked hotly. Kain raised his arms in surrender before nodding slowly. The man at the cart sighed before grabbing a skewer of meat and placing it over an open flame.

"That'll be about 5 lien." the man said. Kain placed 5 silver zenny coins, much to the man's surprise.

"That's a little much, kid. I won't be able to give you change." Kain looked at the man in confusion.

"You said five, didn't you?" he asked. The man opened his mouth the speak, but quickly closed it before shrugging.

"You're right, I said 5. Here you go, one beef skewer." the man said with a smile as he swiped the coins off the cart. Kain smiled and bowed slightly before walking back down the street with his meal. He stopped suddenly and turned to the man.

"Do you know where I can find a map? I'm a little lost."

"Keep going down the street, you'll see a building called 'From Dust Til Dawn'. They sell maps to you huntsman all the time." the man said before taking his cart further down the street. Kain waved in thanks and turned back down the street and began walking. The skewer he got wasn't bad. Very much like aptanoth, but way more tender.

Moonlight crested the buildings behind him as he came upon a well-lit building. He looked up at the sign and frowned. Unfamiliar symbols stared at him, though he could only guess this was the building the man told him about.

"When did the language change." he whispered to himself before walking in. As he entered four men in black and red suits and one in white turned to him. Kain looked at them wide eyed as they drew their weapons.

"Whoa, whoa. Let's all calm down." Kain said while grabbing the handle of his great sword. The man in white moved to speak before another man in black and red flew through the window on their right. Kain quickly grabbed the nearest goon, headbutting him and tossing him at the other three goons. A red blur shot past them as Kain ran out the door. He turned to see a young girl, a year or two younger than him, wielding a scythe. The two locked eyes for a second before the sound of slow clapping was heard. Kain and the girl looked at the source. It was the white clad man slowly walking out while twirling his cane.

"Not bad. Unfortunately, it's time for me to go." he said as he pointed the cane at them. A small crosshair popped up at the end as a flare shot out and towards the two. Kain whipped the sword in front of him and slammed it into the ground, blocking him from whatever it would do. A bright flash erupted, blinding Kain and the girl momentarily before the light faded. The man was gone. Kain looked around for the assailant and spotted him climbing a ladder.

"There!" he shouted. The girl looked up and smiled before vanishing into a cloud of rose petals. Kain would be surprised, but he was too busy climbing the same ladder. The two crested the edge of the building revealing the man.

"Stop right there!" the girl shouted with her weapon ready to attack. Kain stood next to her with his weapon drawn as well. The man turned around with a roll of his eyes.

"End of the line kids!" he said as a massive metal... something flew up from between the buildings and flashed a bright light at them. The man jumped up through a door in the contraption before flipping something in his hands.

"I'd say I'm impressed. But I don't like lying. Good luck kids!" he shouted before tossing the crystal, which pinged at their feet. Kain noticed the cane rise again. He grabbed the girl and brought her behind him and he slammed the great sword into the ground. A flare shot out again at the crystal. Kain braced behind his weapon expecting another bright flash.

An explosion sounded off, but no force hit his sword. Kain looked up to reveal a blonde woman with a purple cape and a weird purple sigil in front of them. Kain could see frustration on the criminal's face as the woman then continued an assault, using what Kain could only think, with magic. The girl behind him leapt out as she changed her scythe into some sort of bowgun and began firing at the machine. Kain shrugged slightly before grabbing the throwing knives on his forearm and throwing them at the machine. The machine flew away, leaving the three fighters on the top of a building.

"You're a huntress," the girl stated while looking at the woman with wide eyes, "can I get an autograph?" she asked with stars in her eyes. The woman looked at the younger fighters and frowned.

20 minutes later

"I hope you realize that your actions tonight will not be taken lightly you two." the woman scolded. Kain and the girl winced as the woman paced around them. After the fight they had gone to a building they called a "police station." Once they were inside, they were placed in a room with a table and a singular light and told to sit.

"You put yourself and others in great danger!" the woman continued to scold.

"They started it!" the girl cried. Kain sat there silently, this not being his first ribbing.

"If it were up to be you'd be sent home. With a pat on the back," the woman started, causing the girl to smile. Kain looked up in time to see the woman scowling at him before slapping a riding crop next to his hand, "And a slap on the wrist." Kain flinched.

"But someone would like to speak with you two." the woman stated as an older man with grey hair walked in with a tray of cookies. The girl seemed to cheer up at the sight of the small snacks, while Kain watched the man with a keen eye. He set the plate of cookies down before the two.

"Ruby Rose." the older man stated before leaning in closer. "You have silver eyes." he spoke to himself. The newly named Ruby scooted back in her chair slightly as the man looked at Kain. Kain and the man had a small staring contest for only a moment when he turned back to Ruby.

"So, where did you learn to do this?" he asked while gesturing to a screen with footage of the fight.

"S-Signal academy." Ruby answered meekly. The man then glanced at Kain.

"Kamura." he said simply. The man accepted the answer and looked back at Ruby.

"They taught you how to use one of the most dangerous weapons ever designed?"

"Well, one teacher in particular." Ruby chuckled quietly. The man looked back at Kain, who stared back and shrugged.

"I see." the man said as Ruby began to munch on cookies. Kain, however, only grabbed one and took a small bite.

"It's just that I've seen only one other scythe wielder of that skill before. A dusty old crow." the man stated. Ruby said something with cookie in her mouth before swallowing.

"Sorry. That's my uncle Qrow. He's a teacher at Signal. I was complete garbage until he took me under his wing, and now I'm like." Ruby then imitated ninja noises. Kain laughed quietly, thinking about Utsushi for a moment.

"So, I've noticed." the man said before sitting down across from them. Kain glanced at the woman who was silently staring at him from the corner of the room. The two locked eyes, causing Kain to look away quickly.

"Yeah, I only have two more years of training left at Signal, and then I'm going to apply to Beacon. You see my sister is starting there this year, and she's trying to become a huntress. And I want to be a huntress so I can help people. My parents always told us to help others, so I thought 'well might as well make a career out of it.' I mean the police are alright, but huntsman and huntresses are just so much more romantic, and exciting, and cool! You know?!" Ruby fawned. The woman in the corner stared at her blankly as Kain laughed silently once again. The man seemed amused before he spoke.

"Do you know who I am?" he asked.

"You're Professor Ozpin. You're the headmaster at Beacon." Ruby answered. The man hummed with a grin.

"Hello." Ozpin said.

"Nice to meet you." Ruby replied.

"You want to come to my school?" Ozpin asked. Ruby smiled.

"More than anything." she said. Ozpin looked at the woman, she rolled her eyes and shrugged.

"Well okay." He said with a smile. Ruby's face split into a huge grin.

"Your sister will be arriving shortly. Go wait in the lobby." Ozpin told Ruby before looking at Kain with a critical eye. Ruby nodded and moved to speed out the door before looking at Kain.

"Thanks for the help." she said before speeding off. Ozpin, Kain, and the woman all sat silently in the poorly lit room.

"Might I ask your name?" Ozpin spoke first. Kain bowed slightly in his seat.

"Kain." he said simply. Ozpin nodded as silence covered the room again.

"What were you doing in that building?" the woman asked.

"I walked in to get a map. I got lost, I'm not big on cities." Kain answered simply. Ozpin glanced at the woman. She rolled her eyes once more.

"Would you tell me how you got into Vale?" Ozpin asked.

"Is that this city?" Kain answered with his own question. Ozpin and the woman glanced at each other briefly.

"Yes." Ozpin answered.

"I don't know. I woke up in an alley." Kain spoke simply. The woman's eyes narrowed as her hand hovered over her riding crop. Ozpin tensed slightly.

"Really?" Ozpin asked with a brow raised.

"I have no reason to lie. All I want to do is find my master and go home." Kain shrugged. Ozpin seemed to relax as Kain grabbed another cookie.

"Who is your master?" Ozpin asked.

"A master rank hunter named Ronin. Hes wearing a full set of Master Rank Rathalos Armor, if that helps you find him." Kain asnwered quickly before taking a bite. Ozpin's brow furrowed in confusion.

"It should help a little, though I've never heard of a Rathalos." Ozpin said.

"Really? The King of the skies? A flying wyvern known for spitting fire and being an all-around pain for hunters?"

"Is it a type of Grimm?"

"Thats the second time I've heard that word tonight. What is a Grimm?" Kain asked. The woman suddenly rose and slammed her hands on the table. Kain and Ozpin jumped and looked at her.

"We're getting nowhere with this. Could you please start speaking plainly!" the woman shouted. Ozpin gave her a slight glare.

"Glynda, that's enough." Ozpin spoke with authority. The woman, Glynda, crumpled slightly under Ozpin's gaze before taking a deep breath.

"I apologize for my assistant, though she is right. Do you have a place to stay for the night?" Ozpin asked Kain.

"No."

"Then how about you come with me and Glynda to Beacon. We have some open rooms for you to use, until after orientation that is." Ozpin offered. Glynda's head snapped towards Ozpin as she opened her mouth to retort, Kain answered.

"I think I will. Thank you, Ozpin." Kain spoke sincerely. Ozpin smiled and rose from his seat.

"Then please. Follow me." he said.
