Andy was tugging on her scarf when her cell phone rang. Adrenaline coursed with dread as she saw the caller ID, and sighed.
"Hi, Emily."
"It's me - " Emily let out a drawn out breath, "You've seen the news?"
Andy pulled back the curtain where snow was swiftly blanketing the city.
"I know, right? It's magical."
"Well, it means she can't come into the office - none of us can - so you'll have to help her."
Andy froze. "But Em - she knows I have a doctor's appointment - she knows its critical!"
Emily sighed. "Andrea, until it's confirmed that its cancer, you know she won't let you out of the office."
Andrea gestured in her tiny apartment.
"But Em, I actually need to go to the doctor to check!"
"You shouldn't even be out in the sun so often. It's all that time you spend talking to your boyfriend instead of picking up her Starbucks."
Andy grit her teeth. " You try - "
"OK, so," Emily huffed, "She needs us on a teleconference, because she has to discuss the latest issue."
"Us?"
"Yes, Andy, us ," Emily sighed. "She might need us."
"Oh, joy."
Andy went over to her computer and blew the dust off the keyboard. She blinked and spat and pressed the on button.
Emily's voice was sharp. "Are you joining?"
"Oh my god, yes , hold your horses."
" - good . Don't be late."
Andy clicked the mouse and joined the teleconference. She was the first one there and she smiled. She switched on her webcam and fidgeted in her lap.
"At least I don't have to leave the apartment… "
Andy jumped as her cell phone rang. She saw the caller ID and froze.
"Miranda - "
"I simply do not uhn-der-stand why you are not in this call, Emily."
Andy paused and peered at the session.
"Um, Miranda, I've - "
"I'm not interested in your excuses. I require you to attend this meeting now, do you understand? That's all."
Andy heaved to hear a dial tone, and scratched her chin. She called Emily but received no response. A pop up appeared and Andy clicked it, and saw a dozen faces, including Emily and Miranda.
" - it's not suitable for a layout. I expect it to be revised and messengered to my home tonight, do you understand?"
Several of the girls on the call were already red, and Jocelyn in particular had her head bowed. Everyone looked fantastic, and Andy glanced down at her attire which was as casual as it needed to be to go to the doctor. Miranda's voice barked and Andy glanced up.
"Ahn-dre-ah. I require to show my girls the website ."
Andy paused, and the people stared back, and the veins in Miranda's neck grew tighter.
"Well?"
Andy saw a pop up message from Emily, and grabbed her mouse.
"Oh, of course, Miranda - I'll just bring it up now."
Emily put her fist in front of her mouth. Miranda sighed as though this was more taxing than anything.
"Ahn-dre-ah. The people at the department inform me it is not live ."
Andy paused.
"Oh. Um, can we still show it, then?"
Miranda snarled, then Emily interrupted,
"Andrea, perhaps you could remote into Miranda's session, and walk us through the points?"
Miranda was momentarily mollified, and nodded.
"Do it now , Ahn-dre-ah."
Andy nodded and requested access. She could feel sweat under her arms as nothing happened.
"Erm, Miranda, you'll need to accept - "
There was a figure in Miranda's background, and there was B-DAD holding a mug of coffee in one hand and papers under his arm, took Miranda's mouse. Everyone on the call kept their faces carefully blank as Andy's cursor developed an avatar on Miranda's share-screen. Andy coughed.
"Um, hi, Mr Tomlinson."
B-DAD walked away whistling, the girls found sudden interest all around them, and Miranda raised her chin. Andy, in Miranda's share-screen, opened the website. The girls chirped in sudden agreement.
"Oh, it is so - Runway !"
Andy nodded along, forcing a smile, then Miranda's voice was sharp.
"You are no longer required on the call, Ahn-dre-ah. Fetch my lunch."
Andy paused, then saw the faces and hung up the call. She glanced out the window, then waited until Emily was out of the call and rang her.
"What?"
Andy bit her nails. "She wasn't serious, right?"
"Uh, yes, Andrea. She does eat, like the rest of us."
"But doesn't she have a cook? How can I go out in this snow?"
Emily laughed.
"You'll have to find a way, Andrea. If I had to pull out of my birthday party to book her a flight home, then you can learn the hard yards like I did."
Andy heard a dial tone. She rubbed at her wrist, and suddenly she almost hoped for bad news from the doctor. She brought up a website, her mouth hanging open.
"How To Know If … "
Andy blinked from the window. A glare of sunshine poked through, and the snow had stopped. She got to her feet and skidded on the floor.
"Shit - "
Andy tied on her scarf, snatched her keys, grabbed her phone which was ringing.
"Shit! Mir - "
"Emily?" Miranda's voice came in sharp, as Andy ran for the front door. "The snow better not be your excuse for taking so long with my lunch."
"No, Miranda, of course not - "
"Do I see any snow? Do I, Emily?"
"No - "
"Good. That's all."
Andy heard a dial tone, she reached the ground floor, and then the snow picked up again. She closed her eyes and spun around and landed in a pile of snow, and began shifting her arms and legs. A homeless man walked by.
"Lady, you is crazy … "
