Nicole, Richard, Gumball, Penny, Ember, Alana, Alex, Ken, Carrie, Anais, Greyson, Naima, and Isabella were all gathered around the orange fish, known as Darwin, singing 'Happy Birthday', but this day was not as special as he expected.
The morning started off great! Darwin was awoken by his girlfriend's kiss, as she told him Happy Birthday. He met everyone downstairs to see a party for him.
"Happy Birthday, Darwin!"
"Thanks, everyone!"
Everyone gathered around Darwin and sang, "Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Darwin, Happy birthday to you!"
"Blow out your candles!" Gumball demanded. Darwin did and saw the cake was a circle, and two stands on the top. It was two statues of him and Gumball, meeting adventures.
"This is a nice little cake!" Darwin noted, "Who made it?"
Everyone moved out of the way except for Ember, who was in full view. She waved, "Hi."
"Oh yeah, the artist made it!"
Ember blushed, "O-Oh, ne? Artist? Pfft, I'm no artist! You're thinking about Ken."
"I am the Artist King," Ken claimed, with his hands on his hips, "No one can defeat me. I have too much power!"
"Oh, but you're wrong, King," Darwin said, playing along, "I have the power of...friendship!" Darwin smiled and hugged Ken.
"Nooo! My powers are fading!" Ken giggled. Darwin let go and joined him, along with the rest of the household.
"So, let's some cake and get to the presents!" Gumball shouted in excitement.
"Yeah!"
When Darwin went to cut the cake, he accidently cut his fin. He yelped and shook it, "Ow!"
"Darwin, are you okay??" Carrie asked.
Darwin shook his head, "Yeah, I'm okay!" He was not okay—he was internally screaming.
Darwin continued to cut the cake and hand everyone their cakes, after getting his, and they all sat by the couch and dining table, chatting with each other. Carrie and Darwin sat with each other, sharing their cakes. Gumball and Penny watched in awe, as they thought aloud, together, "We should do that. Jinx! Jinx! You owe me a soda!" They both giggled.
"So, guess what's coming up soon?"
"Our anniversary!"
"Yep! Have any ideas?"
"I have one," he smiled, "And it's perfect!"
"Hm, where is it?"
"I can't tell you yet, silly, it's a surprise!"
She giggled, "Alright, then."
"Alright peoples! There is one last part of my surprise from yesterday," Ember announced, "Darwin, I found a potion."
"Don't you make potions?" Darwin teased.
"I found a potion that Carrie can use."
"What's it do?" Darwin asked.
"You know how she always has to possess someone to eat, and you can't kiss her or anything because...well, she's see-through and go-through?"
"Yeah...?"
"I made a potion using Penny's piece that will let her eat, and let her kiss you!" Ember exclaimed, "Happy birthday, Darwin."
"You...did...what?" Carrie froze.
"I guess it was a surprise for both of you," Ember chuckled, "And it's permanent. No side effects, nothing," she handed the potion bottle to Carrie, "Drink the whole thing and when you eat, it won't go straight through!"
"Alright, let's do this," Carrie said, grabbing the potion and gulping it down.
Darwin handed her some cake, "Try it."
Carrie nodded, grabbed the cake, and took a bite. Everyone looked at her until she smiled for the first time.
"I guess that means it worked!" Darwin declared.
Carrie nodded, "It worked! Thank you, Ember!"
"No problem," Ember smiled in response.
"Okay, everyone, time for presents!" Nicole said with a smile. Darwin sat on the couch as everyone gathered around him with gifts and bags.
"Open mine first!" Carrie requested. Darwin smiled and opened it, to see a card, customized with hearts and glitter, and skulls, because, well duh, it's carrie.
"I-It took a while," Carrie claimed, "B-But it was worth it! Open it."
Darwin smiled and opened the card, reading the letters on the inside.
He was like a roaring sports car, and you're more like a shopping cart. Sure, the convertible looks cool, sounds cool, and everyone wants one, but...the shopping cart is filled with all the stuff you love.
Darwin smiled in a smuggy way, "Nheh!"
"I love that face of his," Ember giggled, "In that one drama episode, you had said that and he was like 'Nheh'."
"Why is it called drama?" Darwin asked.
"Uh," Gumball butted in, trying to change the subject, "Who's next for their gift?"
"Gumball was doubting y'all's relationship, some because she's 327 years old and you were ten, she likes hard rock, you don't, the meeting with Azrael," Ember explained.
"You did what?" Carrie said, glaring at Gumball.
Gumball scratched his head and smiled nervously, "Heh, it's not my fault, it was Lesile and Masmi who told me to doubt it!"
"No we did not!!" Lesile argued.
"And this is exactly why I tried to change the subject," Gumball said, "Bye," he ran toward the stairs but ran into them instead, sending him on the ground.
"O...kay," Carrie continued, "So, anyways, that will always remind you of how strong our love is," she held his hand, "and how you should never doubt it. And that means you, Lesile, Masami, and Gumball!"
"Okay, next gift?" Ember asked the crowd.
"That will be me," Anais said walking to Darwin, "Okay, dear brother," she said, giving Darwin a bag, he then opened and found nothin. She smiled, "Your gift is me being here!" Anais hugged Darwin with a smile.
"That's all I need," Darwin smiled, hugging her back.
Everyone went through their gifts, some were sketchbooks, some were Zelmore games, and some were socks. Darwin loved all of the gifts he received, but apparently there was one more, from all of them. When Gumball woke up from his unconscious episode, he was greeted by Penny, who helped him up.
"You good?" she asked.
"Yeah, I think," he replied, "Now we have to give Darwin that gift before everyone starts leaving."
"I'll go quieten down everyone," Penny said as she made her way back to the crowd. Gumball ran upstairs and back down after a minute. Everyone was quiet and Darwin was talking with Carrie.
"Ahem," Gumball started, with a gift bag held behind his back, "There is one more gift."
Everyone moved out of the way as Gumball walked in front of Darwin.
"This, buddy, is from everyone," he smiled as he handed Darwin the bag. Darwin took the colored paper out and saw a book titled "Book of Memories". When he opened it, there was moving photos of the adventures him and Gumball went through. From the chase with the DVD, to the end. Episodes like "The Faith" and "The Bros". Darwin could feel himself tear up as he flipped through each page of memories, and when he saw the first page, he started crying. It was the hug they did in "The Origins", when they met once again.
"I-It's the time w-we reunited..."
"All the times we've had together, they were very special to me, so I'm sure they were all special to you."
Darwin hugged Gumball tight, "They are pretty special."
After everyone at the party left, instead of hanging with Darwin, Gumball decided to hang with Penny. When they left, Darwin didn't know he went with her, so we called out, but Nicole told him that Gumball was with Penny.
"He went with Penny, sweetheart."
"But it's my birthday, why did he go with her?"
"Said he had to take care of some business, I dunno."
"Hm..." Darwin walked up the stairs and went into his bedroom, only to be startled by his little sister.
"Oh, sorry, Darwin," she apologized, "Didn't mean to startle you."
"It's fine," Darwin accepted, "Hey, do you know what Gumball went to Penny's for?"
"Didn't he go to Ember's house?"
"Do you mean?"
"He told me that he was going to Ember's house."
"Wow, he told you but not me?"
"It's not that serious, Darwin," she assured.
"He's always hanging out with her! Ever since she entered this stupid world, Ember this, Ember that, I'm sick of it!"
"Darwin, you're overreacting. She's your fan, cousin, and friend," she reminded him.
"I am aware."
"Just wait for him to get back, I'm sure it's all a misunderstanding," she demanded, leaving the room.
"Maybe Anais is right...maybe I am overreacting. I'm sure it's something to do with my birthday! Or...something...maybe I should go eavesdrop."
At Ember's house, Gumball was ranting about someone to Ember and Penny.
"He thinks he can follow me around. He's like Sarah on her 'kooky' days."
"I'm sure it's not that serious."
"Easy for you to say. He's not a sidekick, h-he's like some sort of stalker that wants to be included in everything."
Darwin had arrived, uncontrollably hearing everything he said.
"Rob is like...how should I say this...oh right, he's a stalker."
Darwin sighed in relief. At least Gumball wasn't talking to him. He opened the door and invited himself in, "Hello!"
"Oh, hi, Darwin!" Gumball waved.
"Hey, birthday boy!" Ember greeted.
"Why we ranting about Rob?"
"Oh, just mad about the fact he's nothing but a stalker. I'm surprised he's not in jail yet."
"Why is he not in jail?" Penny wondered.
"Good question," Gumball replied, "I think the police don't care about stalkers."
"That's lame," Darwin noted.
"So, whatcha come here for?" Gumball asked.
"Well, it's my birthday," he reminded him, "but you're here with Ember."
Oh-Oh, that, well, I-I thought I could, uh, a-ask for..." Gumball tried coming up with an excuse, "r-relationship advice."
Ember slowly nodded her head, "Sorry dude, you are a pretty bad liar."
Gumball groaned, "At least I'm not gay."
"You kissed Darwin in the treehouse."
"Wait? Pfft, no, I kissed Penny!"
"And I kissed Masmi!"
"Uh, no," Ember told them, "Tobias and Banana Joe cut the tree, and you slid down the tree house and landed on Darwin's lips, not Penny's."
Gumball turned to Penny, "You never told me this?"
"You never gave me the chance," she declared.
"Oh, right," Gumball reminded himself. He had remembered that he left before Penny or Masmi could tell him the truth.
"That wouldn't be the first time we kissed," Darwin replied.
"Yeah, well..." Gumball cleared his throat, "Anyways—"
"Wait, what's the real reason you're here?" Darwin asked, trying to get the real truth from his brother.
"Uh," Gumball replied, "I...uh..."
"I need him to help me with something," Ember interrupted.
"Can I help?"
"I only need two people."
"Bye, Penny."
"No, I need her, we need dragon power."
Darwin groaned, "Fine!" he shouted, walking to the front door, "Well, I don't need you people either!" He slammed the door behind him and angrily walked down the sidewalk.
"What just happened?" Gumball asked.
"We really need to come up with better excuses," Ember suggested. Penny and Gumball nodded, "Yeah."
Darwin opened the front door to his own house, and when he closed it, a hole appeared. Nicole, Richard, and Anais on the couch, but they had froze when Darwin stomped up the stairs.
"Anybody want to talk to him?" Anais asked.
"I-I'd rather not," Nicole replied, "He seems...angry."
"I'm sure he'll get over it," Richard claimed, "Now, where were we?"
"I don't know about you, but I'm going to check on my brother—"
Gumball ran inside, opening the door, slamming it, and yet another hole appeared. He ran upstairs calling out to the orange fish.
"Darwin, wait!"
"Gumball, what did you do this time?" Anais asked, running after both of his elder brothers. They reached the bedroom and Darwin was facing the window. Gumball walked up to him and Anais was behind them.
"I need context," she said.
"It's not me who ditched his birthday brother to be with that dumb soul of a shape!"
"Hey, Ember's not dumb!"
"Stop trying to save your friend, Gumball!" Darwin argued, "You might as well have been talking about me instead of Rob!"
"WE WERE PLANNING A SPECIAL GIFT FOR YOUR BIRTHDAY!"
Darwin froze, "Wait, what?"
"It was supposed to be a surprise!"
"Oh..."
"Bye," Anais said as she left the room to head back downstairs.
"Come on, buddy, you know I would choose you over her. We're brothers, and best friends for God's sake! I would never choose anyone over you."
"Sorry."
"I should probably have gotten Ember to do it at, like, midnight or something."
"I should probably stop jumping to conclusions."
"Don't worry, buddy," Gumball assured, "We'll work on it."
Darwin smiled, "Thanks, Gumball. Sorry for snapping at you."
"No problem," Gumball replied, before the two hugged tightly.
Ember opened the window, and as usual, she was eavesdropping, "Glad you two made up, but Penny and I have finished the surprise. Follow me."
Ember led them to a huge tunnel. Carrie was at the entrance. She cleared her throat, "Welcome to the Almighty ride of memories!"
"What's this?" Darwin asked with a smug. Carrie took his head and led them down the tunnel where they first came across a screen with "The DVD" memory, then "The Responsible", then "The Third", and basically one photo from each episode. Some memories played were from the times Ember was there.
"T-This is amazing!" Darwin exclaimed, "H-How did you do it?"
"I had a help from a friend," Ember smirked, "His name is Ken."
