Usea, Moscow

"What?!" A bright light with no apparent source blinded Usean President Alexei Markov. When it faded, three of his guards rushed into his office. "Sir! Are you alright?"

"I'm fine. Did you also see the flash?"

"Yes, sir."

Markov reached for the intercom on his desk to contact Minister of Defense Oleg Naoumov when the minister burst through the door. "President Markov! We've lost all contact with the outside! I can't reach any of our bases!"

"What?! I'm heading over to the Central Command. Reestablish communications as quickly as you can!"

It was total chaos at Command. The staff was running around with stacks of paper or sat at their stations frantically trying to get in contact with satellites and armed forces. "Minister Naoumov, we've got in contact with the Black Sea Fleet! They are reporting that all non-Usean lands have been replaced by seas! They are sending longer-range aircraft now to search for land now!"

Principality of Qua Toyne, Outskirts of Maihark

March 1st, 1639

It was a new month. The early morning weather was good, with dark but brightening blue skies, few clouds, and calm waters. Wyvern Knight Marl Patima relaxed on the back of his wyvern during a routine patrol. There wasn't anything around here. Still, tensions with the nearby Kingdom of Louria necessitated these patrols, to prevent potential surprise attacks by Lourian warships.

He heard a faint droning noise but dismissed it. It grew in volume until it began to irritate him, then suddenly a shadow moved over his eyes and caught his attention. He looked towards the rising sun, spotting the source of the droning, now thundering, noise, which was rapidly heading toward him.

"What is that?"

It was like a wyvern, but it was not. It was clearly far away, but it was already large. Its wings did not flap, and as it grew closer, Marl could see that it had four objects spinning loudly. The not-wyvern was gray, with lights flashing on its body and wingtips. It rushed past some distance above him, the buffeting threatening to throw him off his mount. He chased after it, only to find that it was incredibly fast and his wyvern had no chance of catching up. Wyverns were fast, with the fastest reaching 235km/h, but this thing was more than twice, possibly three times, as fast.

He pulled out his manacom to warn his command about the object. "HQ! There is a high-speed object flying towards Maihark! I can't confirm what it is, but it's about 40 kilometers away and flying at nearly 600km/h!"

"Acknowledged, Knight Patima. We are sending the rest of Sixth Squadron to intercept."

"Unidentified object entering Maihark's airspace! Sixth Wyvern Squadron, all wyverns fly!"

Wyverns lined up, opening their wings and running down the runway, and launching into the sky. According to reports, the object was extremely fast, thus they had only a short window of opportunity to shoot it down. As the object approached, the wyverns opened their mouths and generated balls of fire. Just as they were about to fire, the object swiftly ascended. The wyverns had already reached their maximum altitude and couldn't hope to catch the object as it flew on toward Maihark.

"Unidentified object has evaded wyvern squadron. Object continues to fly towards Maihark."

Captain Inne of Maihark's defense order looked towards the sky. Wyverns generally couldn't carry heavy weapons so a singular enemy was likely a reconnaissance unit.

But what was it? It significantly outperformed a wyvern and was far larger. And it was about to fly over the now-defenseless city.

As Captain Inne continued pondering the question, a droning sound began, and shortly after, the object itself appeared. It descended and banked, revealing an inorganic-looking, highly geometric thing, clearly from a technologically-superior nation. But what would such a nation be doing in these lands? They were outside the civilized zones. Moreover, the insignia painted on the object's body, a horizontal dark blue stripe above a yellow stripe with a thin vertical green line in the center and a triangle of three red stars, did not match any of the nations she knew of. The object lazily circled four times and flew off in the direction it came, climbing as it did so.

Prime Minister Kanata was worried. Yesterday's incident, the penetration of Maihark's airspace by an unknown intruder, indicated a superior potential enemy. The military reported that the unknown object was faster and could fly higher than any of their wyverns. Its origin was completely unknown, entering from the supposedly empty east and the complex insignia it possessed belonged to no known country in the world.

"What do you all think of this report?" he asked the other government officials. "How should we interpret it?"

The intelligence representative raised his hand.

"According to our intelligence, Mu, the second largest country in this world and part of the highly civilized zones, has developed a flying device that bears resemblance to the intruder. However, reports state that Mu's device only reaches 300 km/h and has two sets of wings while the intruder reached 600 or more km/h and only has one set. However, there are other reports that there is an emerging nation to the far west, calling themselves the Gra Valkas Empire. They have subjugated their neighboring countries and declared war on an alliance of Second Civilization nations. The weapons they possess are completely unknown."

Light laughter rippled across the room. An emerging nation outside the civilized regions declaring war on Second Civilization countries? It must have been a joke.

"The Gra Valkas Empire is likely unrelated to the incident here, being over 15,000km away. It is difficult to believe that they can send an object from that far away to here."

The meeting went back to the fact they knew nothing. If the object were an ally, they could simply make contact. However, the deliberate impingement of their airspace pointed to the object being from a likely enemy. This was disastrous, as they were already being threatened by the Kingdom of Louria, and fighting two enemies would crush their nation.
