hey y'all!
here is part five, i'm sorry part four was a little disturbing...but i thought it was a cool thing to work in!
here's all y'all's tadashi heroics, he's such a brave boy!
silvie: thanks so much for your reviews! in my opinion, a cerebrectomy could be used when someone had a brain disease, and we could possibly transplant lobes from a brain donor to whoever needs them. i think it would be a cool procedure-but doctors wouldn't take the brain from a perfectly healthy person. Obake is just terrible.
and i think tadashi would be a great med student! ik he's a robotics major, but it seems like he'd have to have at least a little bit of medical knowledge to program baymax. we see in the series that he did have help from doctors, but to even have an idea of it, i think he would have studied some medicine.
thanks y'all! i hope you like this chapter, i personally love it!
I strap on my armor, tighten my braces, and put on my goggles. I'm going back. I have to save my parents, and I'm not letting Hiro or Honey come with me—we can't risk anything happening to the baby, and Hiro's already hurt. Maybe not badly, but it could get a lot worse. I don't want that to happen to him.
I scribble another note to my family, making sure they know what I've done. I don't tell them where I'm going, though, trying to discourage them from following me. But Hiro and Honey are both very determined people, and they will definitely follow me if they see this. So I just stick it on Aunt Cass's nightstand and quietly shut her door.
Hiro fixed the thrusters on my braces, so I step outside, push the button, and soar into the sky. I'm only going to use the braces until I get to the woods, then turn them off and walk the rest of the way. I really don't want to crash through the trees and kill myself halfway through my flight.
The trip passes quickly, and I land just outside the woods, quietly powering off my thrusters. It's time to save my parents—and maybe Baymax, too, since I have no idea where he is.
As I walk quietly through the woods, a voice cuts through the darkness. "Tadashi?"
I jump so badly I fall over on my tailbone, thankfully managing to keep back a scream. "B-baymax?"
"Tadashi," Baymax states again, emerging from the shadows. The robot grabs me under the arms and sets me back on my feet. "I am sorry I startled you. I will scan you for injury."
Baymax's scanner whirs. "You have sustained no new injuries. However, my scan indicates that your spine is still broken. You should not be able to stand up."
"Yeah, well, Hiro fixed me. Aren't these cool?"
Baymax studies my braces. "They are cool. They allow you to walk, so they are very useful. Where is Hiro now?"
"Don't contact him," I whisper. "He's at home. Resting."
"I will not contact Hiro. Resting will be beneficial for his health. Are you going to retrieve your parents from Obake? I am sorry I was not able to do so. I was forced to retreat so that Obake could not use me to scan for Hiro."
"That's okay, big guy. I'm gonna go rescue them now, and I want you to go back to the café and make sure Hiro and Honey don't leave—since they'll definitely try to. They're like that."
"But what about you, Tadashi? You are not capable of fighting off large robots such as the ones Obake has."
I smile up at the robot. "I'll be fine. Seriously, go home and protect them. You can physically restrain Hiro if you need to."
Baymax gives me a fist bump, then walks away down the road. I take a deep breath and continue on, walking for several more minutes before I finally come to the cave.
Stepping cautiously inside, I descend the stairs as quietly as possible, unconsciously rubbing my cheek where I scraped it the last time I went down these stairs. Was that only last night? It feels like a week at least.
I creep into the first chamber—the destroyed one—and make my way over the rocks as silently as possible. I end up twisting my ankle twice when I catch my foot in small crevices, but I manage not to make any sounds of pain and continue on. Now my ankle hurts, though, so I resolve to do more superhero training.
When I finally come to the operating chamber, I hide behind the wall and ready my blaster gloves. I never aim to kill with these, just stun. It shouldn't be hard to knock everyone out and disable the robots. Is it weird that I would feel bad if I destroyed Obake's creations? Should I not feel bad for this guy?
But he's got brain damage. According to Baymax, my parents do too. Am I going to kill them? No. So why should I kill Obake when he just has the same problem as they do?
See, this is why some people think I'm too soft. I don't want to hurt anyone. That's why my blasters are meant to stun—it causes little to no pain, and I can easily take out my enemies without anyone getting hurt.
It's what I've always cared about.
And if I'm careful…
No one is going to die today.
I take a deep breath and step into the chamber.
Obake looks up and glares at me through narrowed eyes. "Hello, Tadashi. I thought you might come back."
"Well, I did. Give me my parents back."
"Did you bring your brother?"
"Why would I?"
Obake sighs. "So you didn't bring him. I admit that I thought you would, if only to assist you in attacking me. He certainly has more useful weaponry then you do."
"Maybe so. But I'm not here to hurt you. I just want my parents back."
I realize that Mom and Dad are standing directly behind Obake, looking confused. Obake picks up a remote from the table, pressing a button on it. The huge robots step out of the shadows and grab my parents, pinning their arms behind their backs.
Obake smiles evilly. "You want them back? Then you're going to have to fight for them. This will only end when one of us is dead."
I fire up my gloves—thank goodness Hiro made these Bessie-resistant—and prepare to fight for my life.
And my parents' lives.
And my wife's.
And Hiro's.
This is it.
Tadashi Hamada is not going down without a fight.
—HIRO—
As soon as I hear the café door open, I jump out of bed and rush downstairs, ignoring my headache. I have to know if Tadashi is back—I woke up to him leaving and thought he was probably just going to the garage, but he's been out for at least an hour and a half. I was really tired from the whole ordeal yesterday, so I didn't get up out of bed to check if Tadashi was okay. I probably should have. But I did get dressed in my armor, excepting my helmet and gloves because I can't wear them with my stitches and sprained wrist. Of course, I equipped my wrist brace with magnets as soon as I got home—don't tell Tadashi.
I burst into the living room and run smack into Baymax, which sends me flying backwards to land flat on my back with a loud thump. I gasp as all the wind is knocked out of me, and Baymax bends over, seeming concerned.
"Hiro," the robot starts. "I am sorry I knocked you over. I will scan you now. Scan complete. You have sustained a slight contusion of your lumbar area, but this is not a serious injury. Why were you running down the stairs?"
Still panting, I push myself up and gasp, "Where's…Tadashi?"
"Tadashi has gone to rescue your parents from Obake. He has requested that I do not let you follow him. He wishes to protect you."
"Well, you're not keeping me here," I growl, trying to push past Baymax and failing miserably. "Take me there, Baymax. Please."
Baymax stands in front of the door. "No, Hiro. Tadashi does not want you to get hurt. I do not want you to get hurt, either."
"I don't care if I get hurt!" I exclaim, still struggling furiously to get past the robot. "I want to help!"
"Hiro—"
I finally dodge Baymax's arms and bolt outside, jumping onto Dashi's moped and revving the engine. The streets are slick and wet now, and rain is pouring. Man, it's dark. I can barely see.
Several minutes later, I reach the edge of the woods and skid onto the dirt road. As I drive rapidly down the path, rain continues to pour down. The trees provide a little cover from the rain, but not much, so the road is mostly mud. Great. The moped isn't gonna have much—
The vehicle skids sideways on the road, and I'm vaguely conscious of flying off of it.
—traction.
I fly through the air and slam into the hill next to the path, bouncing down it and then skidding to a halt on my front. I lay there for several seconds, my face in the dirt, listening to the pattering of the rain.
Eventually, I decide I have to get up, and do so with a wince of pain. But the worst of it is a slightly scraped chin and mud all down my front. Nothing major, which is good since I was already hurt.
I wipe some of the mud off my face—though I can't get it all—and prepare to climb back up the hill so I can keep driving. But suddenly, I hear a loud growl and see a pair of glowing green eyes.
Bessie.
Oh crap.
I scramble back up the hill, slipping several times, and pull the moped upright. It still works, thankfully, but I'm only barely faster than Bessie, and I can hear her panting behind me. I rev the engine and take off at what feels like the speed of light, skidding around the bends in the road and spraying mud everywhere.
Bessie roars angrily behind me and I feel her claws scrape my armor. If I hadn't been wearing that, I might be dead.
I'm pretty sure the cave is getting close, and that's almost definitely where Tadashi is. But I'm certain Bessie would be able to follow me inside, and that wouldn't be good.
Suddenly, I realize I can't hear Bessie anymore. I cautiously look back over my shoulder and see nothing.
Relieved, but still on guard, I continue driving. I can't just assume that Bessie is gone, not after what Obake told me. But where is she? It's like she just melted into the trees.
I get my answer a few moments later when I round a bend and see Bessie blocking the road, growling menacingly. Rather embarrassingly, I let out an unmanly scream and swerve. But I swerve so badly that the moped nearly tips over, and I go completely off-road.
Now the ride is so bumpy I'm pretty sure the moped is going to throw me off again every other second. I might still be screaming. I'm not sure.
Several seconds later, I realize I can see a dark, gaping hole in the hillside. That must be the cave—and most likely where Tadashi is. I have to get in there.
I rev the engine up as high as it will go and practically fly across the ground, heading for the cave.
But a tree gets in my way.
I desperately jerk the handlebars, but the moped is going too fast. I have no choice.
I take a flying leap off the moped, and I hear it slam into the tree as I skid across the forest floor. I come to a stop right outside the cave and jump up, hurrying down the stairs to the collapsed chamber.
When I get there, I collapse to the floor, panting and rubbing my chest. I'm completely out of breath and absolutely filthy, covered in mud from my two ejections from the moped. But I think the worst of it is a couple new scrapes, none of which a little bacitracin won't fix. I'll be fine. Right now, I have to get to Tadashi.
I manage to regain my breath—stupid asthma—and creep forward into the hallway. I can hear shouts and some kind of blasting sound that I think is Tadashi's gloves. I'm just about to step inside and come to the rescue when I hear my name.
"Hiro?"
I whirl around and discover Baymax, who's looking a little ticked off. "Why did you run away, Hiro? You knew Tadashi wanted you to stay safe. You should not have left."
I sigh. "Sorry, big guy. I just…I couldn't stay there, knowing that Tadashi was in trouble. I had to do something."
"This is understandable. But I must take you home now."
"No, Baymax," I growl. "I'm not leaving. I need to protect Tadashi."
"Tadashi is capable of protecting himself for the time being. Let me take you home, Hiro."
"No!"
"Hiro—"
I turn and sprint into the cavern.
Tadashi is spinning and leaping and firing electricity at Obake's robots, who stand in front of our parents. Mom and Dad are collapsed on the floor, unmoving.
"Tadashi!" I yell, firing up my newly enhanced brace.
"Hiro?"
A robot shoots a blast of electricity similar to Tadashi's at my brother, and it catches him in the jaw. Dashi hits the ground hard and seems dazed for the next several seconds, enough for the robot to stomp toward him with its huge fist raised.
"Dashi!"
I shoot out a magnet beam and latch onto the robot, pulling myself onto its back and firing more magnetized energy into its joints and control panel. I'm not letting this machine hurt my brother.
The robot collapses, throwing me to the ground. I scramble up and rush over to Tadashi as the other robot comes closer and closer.
"Dashi!" I exclaim. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," he groans. "That didn't help my ribs, though."
He sees me glaring at him and laughs. "Really, Hiro, I'm okay."
I sigh. "Fine. Now I guess we should focus on our other problem."
Tadashi gets to his feet and faces the robot with me. "Let's do this."
And we throw everything we've got at the robot, blasting it with all the energy we have. But I know deep down that it's not going to be enough. We need help.
I can see Obake standing calmly behind the robot, absolutely certain that Tadashi and I are going to lose. Near Obake are the operating tables, on which stand two remotes—one that is used for the robot, I bet, and the one I saw him use to control my parents. I wonder…
"Tadashi, hang on!" I yell, then jump off of the robot. I hear Tadashi's shouts of annoyance and am vaguely conscious of Baymax, who I left in the tunnel, soaring into the room as I sprint toward the table, desperately trying to get to that remote.
Obake notices too, and he also runs toward the operating table. But I get there first, and I snatch up the remote and try to examine the buttons while dodging Obake. They all have short labels—wake up, go to sleep, self-destruct, do backflips—what?—and finally, I see one labeled off.
"No!" Obake yells as I push the button, and suddenly, my parents are staring straight at me with looks of sheer horror in their eyes. Their expressions clearly read what have we done?
"Hiro!" Dashi shouts from over by the robot. "A little help here!"
I steal one last glance at my parents, then fire my magnets at the robot, latching myself onto it again. It staggers around the cave, swatting at me but failing to knock me off its back. It does knock over the operating table, though, and the remote to control it falls to the floor, along with all of the surgical tools. That's not exactly safe—
Wait.
The remote.
I just need to turn the robot off and we'll be safe!
I leap off the robot's back again—I'm sure Tadashi is pretty ticked off that I keep leaving him, but at least he's got Baymax now—and try to grab that remote too. I can see Obake lunging for it too, desperate not to lose this weapon.
This time, I don't get there first.
Neither does Obake.
The robot does.
Its foot comes down on the remote, and the small device splinters. I thought that would power it off, but apparently the robot pressed one button in particular.
The robot stops with Tadashi on its back, and I watch in horror as a small screen on its front proclaims—with a voice, nonetheless—"Self-destruct in five…four…"
"Tadashi, get down!" I scream, and Tadashi leaps down from the robot, running over to me.
"Three…two…one…"
Baymax jumps on top of me and wraps his huge arms around me, forcing me to the ground.
The last thing I hear is Obake's scream—half fury, half panic—and then a flash of light fills the room, and my final thought is of Tadashi, with no one to protect him.
And my parents.
We're all going to die.
It's over, really over now.
Then I fade to black.
