note/ the holidays are coming and my work place s getting very busy so I wont have as much time to write as I did when I first started. Chapters are going to be scarce from here on out, however reviews may just boost production if I know there is interest in this story.
The train ride was a long one but Frank mostly slept the whole time. Waking up occasionally to enjoy the sights along the way. He'd never seen so much green before. After two days of traveling the train finally pulled into the station. Frank got off and stretched. Suddenly an older man approached him.
"Pardon me young man, is your name Frank?" He asked.
"Oh, uh yeah, yep that's me." They shook hands
"I'm Lewis, I'm sure Grim told you I would meet you here to lead you to where you will be staying."
Frank nodded.
"Alright good, the bus is waiting now, come along."
The two left the station and boarded the bus. Frank was stunned by his surroundings and Lewis took notice.
"Never been to Zuzu city hm?"
"Oh, no, I've never really been too far from where I come from." He nervously responded.
"Don't worry, where I'm taking you is much more quiet than this, It'll give you. Chance to settle down." Lewis chuckled and patted him on the back. It was about an hour drive to the quiet little town.
"I couldn't help but notice that you're in pretty rough shape, fortunately Pelican town has its own resident doctor so I'll get him to look you over."
"Yeah, I've been through quite a bit…" Frank responded.
"Where do you come from Frank?"
"Uh, Gloomsville."
"Hm, never heard of it, is it nice there?"
"Eh, it's usually really stormy and dreary…"
"Well I'm sure you'll find Pelican town to be a rather refreshing change of pace then." Lewis smiled. "Do you have any friends or family that live there?"
Frank's stomach jolted as he made a sudden realization. Len, he left Len behind. Oh god what was going through his head at this very moment? He felt the color drain from his face and suddenly felt extremely dizzy.
"Oh dear, are you alright there Frank? Was it something I said?"
Frank didn't have a chance to respond before darkness engulfed his vision once more.
Frank woke up lying in a hospital bed. He looked to his side to see that he'd been hooked up to an I.V as well as a heart monitor. The tech all looked so much more advanced than anything he'd seen in Gloomsville. His busted arm was now in a cast and his ribs had been properly dealt with as well as his nose. He could tell he was being pumped full of painkillers as he finally felt some sort of relief from his injuries. He laid his head back down on his pillow when suddenly he heard the door next to him click open. A man in a green doctor's coat walked in and appeared to be more than surprised to see Frank awake.
"Oh! You're actually awake. To be honest I wasn't expecting you to wake up at all in the state you're in." He said, setting down his clipboard on the bed side table.
"It's really that bad huh?"
"Well, when my nurse, Maru and I were looking over your condition both her and I were shocked you were even alive to begin with." He said pulling up a chair to his bedside and taking a seat.
"Oh… I didn't realize it was that bad…"
"Yes, do you mind if I ask what happened?"
Frank hesitated for a moment before reluctantly answering.
"I'm not entirely sure, all I remember is waking up at the base of a cliff… my head was spinning and everything hurt." He lied. The fight he had with Skull Boy probably wasn't important for the doctor to know.
"Do you remember who you are and where you came from?"
"Yeah, it's just the actual accident that's hazy."
"And you didn't go to a doctor immediately because…?" He pressed.
Frank paused again.
"I really didn't think it was that urgent… I mean, I've been through worse." He shrugged. The doctor exhaled before picking his clipboard back up to jot something down.
"I'd there anything else I should know as your doctor?"
"Like?"
The doctor looked from his clipboard. "Unfortunately we couldn't find any medical records for you, normally I'd have all the information I'd need ready for new patients, but in this case I've got nothing on you other than what Lewis has told me and the information from your wallet."
"You looked through my wallet?"
The doctor suddenly looked a bit bashful in response. "Oh! Lewis told me it was probably for the best to look for an I.D on you. Typically I would have just waited for you to wake up, but like I said before I wasn't sure you'd be waking up at all." He stammered. Just then a young woman entered. She froze upon meeting Frank's eyes.
"Oh my god he's actually alive? I don't understand. By all accounts you should be dead right now." She blurted. Suddenly becoming aware of what she'd just said she started backtracking. "I mean…I'm sorry… you're just in such rough shape-" she stopped herself.
"Maru, could you go grab my bag from the front desk?" The doctor called over his shoulder.
She nodded and darted out.
"Don't worry Mr. Stein, we'll get you fixed up and out of here in no time." He forced a reassuring smile.
"It's fine, you can call me Frank." Frank cringed a bit at that.
"Oh sorry, you'll be out of here in no time, Frank. I'm Harvey, I'll be your doctor for now. Maru and I will do our absolute best to get you back to 100%."
Frank hated hospitals. The smell. The lights. The sounds. At least the food was good here but he had a feeling it wasn't made in house. This was all so new and honestly kind of scary to him. Everything was so different from Gloomsville. With all the tests being done on him he couldn't help but feel like some lab rat. He was aware that these people were very different from the kind he was familiar with. It scared him honestly. People kept coming in to say hello to him. They probably weren't used to new faces in their town, let alone a blue one. They seemed nice at least, even though Frank had the feeling they were just popping in to see the "monster" that just arrived to town. Oh god. That's what he was to them wasn't it. He was a freak to these people. It certainly wasn't helping him relax that's for sure. Come time for him to be discharged Lewis and Maru's mother Robin were there to greet him. Robin was one of the visitors to his room while he was recovering. She had brought a few welcome treats and Frank was very easy to win over with such goodie's.
"How are you feeling today Frank?" Lewis smiled.
"Probably as good as I could feel at this point." Frank responded with a fake positivity to his voice. Lewis could still hear the uncertainty in his voice however.
"Don't worry, everyone in this town is very nice. We have a lovely community here, you'll fit right in."
Frank seriously doubted that. He could feel the eyes of the other townsfolk on his back.
"Besides, where you'll be saying is a bit off to the side. About a thirty minute walk from here. You'll have the chance to relax by yourself as much as you need." Robin chimed.
"Oh, cool. That's good." Frank sighed a breath of relief at that. Finally, a place he could just hide.
"Shall we be off then?" Lewis asked, turning in the direction of their destination.
The walk up to the property was lush and overgrown. It seemed no one had used this path in a while. Frank took it all in. It was very refreshing after being condemned to a bed in a cold white room for a week or so. His nose still hurt but he was able to breathe properly again. After a long walk they finally came up on the property. It was a decrepit little shack surrounded by a few acres of overgrown farmland that the forest had long been trying to reclaim.
"Don't worry, Robin here is our town carpenter and was very kind as to fix up the inside to make it more welcoming for you." Lewis said, taking notice of Frank's expression.
"I would have done more but I'm a bit low on materials at the moment. I was able to install a heating system however. We wouldn't want you to freeze out here. I also fixed up the old fireplace." Robin added.
"No no it's fine, it's honestly a little better than where I'd been living beforehand." Technically that wasn't a lie since it really was better than the garage itself. Of course the garage was on the property of the mansion but that wasn't important.
"If you ever need something fixed up or even upgraded, my shop is just northeast of here."
"And the town is just down that path. I'll be making rounds so don't feel like you're not a part of Pelican Town just because you're all the way out here." Lewis smiled. "And before I forget, The Feast of the Winter Star is coming up, we're having a big event in town square for it. You should definitely come! It would be a great way to get to know your new neighbors."
No way in hell. Absolutely not. Frank nodded with a fake smile.
"Maybe." He lied.
"Well, we'll leave you to it then. Don't be shy if you need anything. We're all friends here." Lewis said, turning to leave, Robin following.
"See you around Frank." She smiled. And then they were gone. Frank took this moment to look around a bit more. Fitting they put the freak out in the middle of the woods. Couldn't have a monster living in town square. Of course this wasn't actually the case, but Frank wasn't exactly thinking straight as of late. He slunk into his new place, shutting the door behind him. It was actually pretty nice on the inside but Frank couldn't notice it at the moment. He just stood there for a moment in silence before leaning his back against the door and sliding down to the floor. He buried his face in his one good hand and hugged his knees to his chest, finally letting the loneliness looming over him since arriving to town consume him.
"I want to go home."
