The next morning, Smith and 20 soldiers behind him were standing in the square in front of Notre Dame. Frollo's carriage pulled up.
"Attennnnntion!", Smith shouted.
The carriage door opened and Frollo came out looking like he had a headache.
"Good morning sir", Smith said as he saluted Frollo.
"Ohh...", Frollo mumbled.
"Are you feeling alright?"
"I'm fine...just...had a little trouble with the fireplace."
"I see...Your orders sir?"
"Find the gypsy girl and her friends"
The soldiers started by breaking into a family's house that was hiding actual gypsies of in the basement. They brought the gypsies out front to a bank on the River Seine and Frollo offered them 10 pieces of silver for Katara. None of them talked however, as they didn't know Katara. Even if they did, they still wouldn't have talked. The soldiers put them in a wagon and pushed the wagon into the river.
When the gypsies got out of the wagon, the soldiers pulled them back to shore and Frollo doubled his offer. They again refused, so he ordered them to be taken to jail. While the soldiers took them away, Smith was sitting to the side with an upset look on his face while he shook his hand in disgust.
The next target was a family with a windmill next to their house. In the crowd gathered out front, people were upset that Frollo was going too far with this supposed witch hunt. Among the crowd, hiding, were Katara and Sokka. They had snuck out of the Court of Miracles to get food when they saw a concerned crowd gathering in front of the house.
Inside the house, Frollo was questioning the family.
"We found this gypsy talisman on your property. Have you been harboring gypsies?"
"Our home is always open to the weary traveler. Have mercy, my lord."
"I'm placing you and your family under house arrest until I get to the bottom of this. If what you say is true and you are innocent, then you have nothing to fear."
"But we are innocent. I assure you. We know nothing of these gypsies."
Frollo then closed the front door behind him. He placed a guards spear in front of the door. He then turned to Smith and said, "Burn it."
"What?!"
"Until it smolders, these people are traitors and must be made examples of."
"With all due respect sir, I was not trained to murder the innocent."
"But you were trained to follow orders."
Smith then walked towards the house with a torch. At the last second, he threw the torch into a barrel of water.
"Insolent coward", Frollo said.
Frollo then grabbed another torch and set fire to the windmill, which set fire to the house. Smith then dived into the house through a window. He then kicked open the front door, letting everybody out.
After the family walked away, a soldier hit Smith on the back of the head, knocking him to the ground. Two others then held his arms, as Frollo rode up to him.
"The sentence for insubordination is death. Such a pity. You threw away a promising career."
"Consider it my highest honor, sir."
Katara then ran towards them. As the soldier raised his sword to decapitate Smith, Katara threw a rock at Frollo's horse, knocking him off. This distracted the soldiers long enough for Smith to get up and punch the soldiers before stealing Frollo's horse and start riding away.
"Get him! And don't hit my horse!", Frollo said.
The soldiers then fired arrows towards Smith. One of them hit him in the shoulder, knocking him off, and he fell off a bridge and into the River Seine. The soldiers ran to the bridge and continued firing arrows at him.
Meanwhile, Katara and Sokka thought about going back to the Court of Miracles. Instead, they ran down to the riverbank, making sure to stay hidden from Frollo.
Frollo then ordered the soldiers to stop firing.
"Don't waste your arrows. Let the traitor rot in his watery grave. Find the girl. If you have to burn the city to the ground so be it."
After they left, Katara jumped in the river and grabbed Smith. She removed his armor to bring him back up to the surface so she could carry him to safety.
By sunset, half of Paris was on fire. The sky was red and filled with black smoke.
"Sir. We've looked everywhere and still no sign of the gypsy girl or her friends."
"I don't get it. I had the entire cathedral surrounded. Guards at every door. There was no way she could have escaped...unless..."
Frollo then looked up at the bell tower.
