The thought of Frollo attacking Katara was something Aang never wanted to imagine. Smith then finally got up.
"We have to find the Court of Miracles before daybreak. If Frollo gets there first, all hell will break loose. Are you coming with me?"
"...I can't."
"I thought Sokka was your friend. And I thought you loved Katara."
"I do. But I've put them in enough danger already. I have to stay out of it."
"They stand up for you. You know, you have a funny way of showing gratitude...well I'm not going to sit by and watch Frollo massacre innocent people. You do what you think is right."
Smith then left.
Unbeknownst to them, the archdeacon, who had came up another stairwell had listened to the exchange. As Aang turned around, he had a demanding look on his face.
Aang attempted to convince him otherwise.
"What? What am I supposed to do? Go out and rescue her from the jaws of death and the whole city will cheer like I'm some sort of a hero? She already has her knight in shining armor and it's not me."
The archdeacon didn't budge.
He then grabbed the woven band and gave it to Aang.
After a minute, Aang reluctantly agreed.
"I must be out of my mind."
At the bottom of the cathedral, Smith was exiting a side door when Aang appeared upside down in front of him, having climbed down.
"Smith"
"Ah!"
"I'm coming with you."
"Glad you changed your mind."
"I'm not doing it for you. I'm doing it for her."
"You know where it is?"
"She said this would guide us there."
"Great. Great. Ah, great...what is it?"
"I'm not sure."
"Hmm. Must be some sort of code. Maybe it Arabic. No, no not Arabic. Maybe it's Ancient Greek."
"When you wear this woven band, you hold the city in your hand."
"What?"
"It's the city."
"What?"
"It's a map. See? Here's the cathedral, here's the river and this here must be-"
Smith, unable to comprehend what it meant, began talking. For a few seconds, they were both talking over each other.
When they both stopped, Smith said, "Alright. Fine. If you say it's a map, it's a map. But if we're going to find it we have to work together. Truce?" As he said it, he patted Aang on the back.
"Well...ok", Aang said as he slapped Smith's back where he was injured.
"Sorry."
"...No you're not."
Aang and Smith then headed in the apparent direction of the Court of Miracles. It was hiding in a cemetery. They walked up to a large shrine-like grave with a symbol on it.
"This looks like the symbol on the map", Smith said.
"But what does it mean?"
"Hmm. I'm not sure. I could make out an inscription but it's going to take a few minutes to translate it."
Aang then lifted the roof off of it, revealing a stairwell going underground.
"Yes, yes. Or-or we could just walk down those stairs."
They descended into the stairwell. At the bottom was a large artificial cavern with skeletons everywhere.
"Is this the Court of Miracles?", Aang asked.
"Off hand I'd say it's the court of ankle-deep sewage. Must be the Old Catacombs. Cheerful place. Ha. Kinda makes you wish got out more often, eh Aang?"
"Not me. I just want to warn Katara and then get back to the bell tower before Frollo finds out it was us and creates more trouble."
"Speaking of trouble, we should've run into some by now."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, you know. A guard, a booby trap..." The lights then went out. "...Or an ambush."
Suddenly a dozen men jumped out from behind and subdued them.
"Well, well, well. What have we here?", a gypsy said.
"Trespassers!", one said.
"Spies!", another said.
"We're not spies!", Smith said.
"You have to listen-", Aang said before their mouths covered.
"Don't interrupt us. You're very clever to have found our hideaway. Unfortunately, you won't live to tell the tale."
The men then grabbed them and took them away.
They arrived in what ended up being the Court of Miracles.
The lead gypsy got on a giant wooden platform.
"Gather around everybody. There's good 'noose' tonight. It's a doubleheader. A couple of Frollo's spies. And not just any spies. His Captain of the Guard and his loyal bell-ringing henchman."
The crowd booed as Aang and Smith had their necks wrapped around nooses.
"Any last words?"
They attempted to talk but couldn't.
"That's what they all say." He then was ready to pull the lever that would've split the floor underneath them. At the last second however, a voice from the back yelled, "Stop!" It was Katara, with Sokka right behind her.
"These men aren't spies. They're our friends", she said.
"Well why didn't they say so?"
"We DID say so", Aang and Smith said.
"Smith saved the Miller Family and Aang helped me and Sokka escape from the cathedral."
"We came to warn you", Smith said to the crowd. "Frollo's coming. He says he knows where your hideout is and he's attacking at dawn with 1,000 men."
The crowd gasped.
"Then let's waste no time. We must leave immediately", Katara said.
The crowd quickly began packing their belongings.
"You took terrible risk coming here. We not exactly show but we're grateful."
"Hey, don't thank me. Thank Aang. Without his help, I never would've found my way here", Smith said.
"Nor would I", said a voice at the larger entry. It was Frollo and his guards. They stormed the place and captured everyone.
"Finally, the Court of Miracles is mine at last. Dear Aang, I knew you could be of use to me."
"What are you talking about?", Katara asked.
"Why he led me straight to you, my dear."
"You're a liar."
"And look what else I've caught in my net. Captain Smith, back from the dead. Another miracle no doubt. I shall remedy that."
"They'll be a little bonfire in the square tomorrow and you're all invited to attend", Frollo told everyone before telling a guard, "Lock them up."
He then looked at Aang and told the guard, "Take him back to the bell tower. And make sure he stays there." Aang was then dragged in a separate direction from everyone else.
