Today was Thanksgiving in Peace Valley, Wisconsin. The town seemed to be free of unworldly interlopers for the holiday. Ceci Masters knew that the Ghost Zone had a truce on Christmas. So Thanksgiving must have also had an unspoken truce since she hadn't seen or heard of any ghost attacks for the entire week! She was highly grateful for it!
She also appreciated that her parents acted like ordinary individuals for the holiday! Due to being ghost hunters, they tended to behave quite abnormally most of the time. Hence whenever they behaved normally was another reason to be grateful. Currently, Ceci Masters stood inside her kitchen, assisting her mother make their feast.
Naturally, her father, Vlad, was reveling in the Packers' Thanksgiving football game. Her thirteen-year-old younger brother Charlie was working on the pies. Felicity being only nine, couldn't work in the kitchen. Therefore, her job was setting up the table and making the centerpiece for dinner. They had their Alexa playing some Disney tunes while they worked.
Around 2:45, dinner was prepared. Maddie had to drag her hubby away from the enormous flat-screen TV. He griped that he wanted to finish the game. However, his wife reminded him that Thanksgiving was a time for the family. Plus, he already had the game recorded on his DVR. So he could always finish it later.
Conceding defeat, the family of five gathered around the table. Vlad led everyone in, saying a brief prayer before they started eating. Everyone agreed that Vlad's mashed potatoes before the game were perfect. Also, Maddie remembered to get cranberry sauce since it was her daughters' favorite food for Thanksgiving.
"So, Charlie, what's your newest book about?" his mother questioned him kindly. She was taking dainty bites of ham. None of the family liked turkey, so they always had ham on Thanksgiving.
Her only son looked up from his carefully sliced ham. "I've been reading an intriguing book about today's holiday. So much more then what they teach us in school with Pilgrims and Native Americans."
"Hey! I enjoyed the Thanksgiving play the kids at school put on!" cut in Felicity. Her adorable features were scrunched up with anger. Ceci immediately tried to diffuse the situation before it escalated.
"Felicity, please calm down. You know our brother is all about the facts of life," her older sister soothed her. Gradually her little sister's face became normal again.
Their father glanced at his daughters, "Let's not have any petty squabbles over this delicious meal. Now, darling Felicity, what was your school play like?" her father inquired curiously.
"Well, it wasn't my class that put it on," admitted the adorable nine-year-old. "It was the other fourth-grade class that did. But the costumes were so cute! However, a few performers forgot the food was all made of wax. But, since they made funny faces when they attempted to eat it, it was adorable. I can't wait till my class gets to put on a play!" she squealed excitedly.
"Well, don't worry, sweetheart. Your father and I won't miss any play you have a part in," her mother assured her. Her smile was warm and assuring. Which made everyone at the table feel much calmer.
Ceci flicked her brown braid over her shoulder. "I'm thankful that the entire school collected enough food for the impoverished to have a proper Thanksgiving. I believe my being class VP had something to do with it! I know Cory, and I make a terrific team as class president and vice president!" Ceci declared proudly.
Her father chuckled. "Well, it would seem your school's politics are much more agreeable then the ones that adults deal with," his wife lightly jabbed him for the remark. Maddie then turned to her eldest. "So, anything else we should know from our VP?"
Ceci made sure to wipe the butter off her upper lip. "Well, now that's Thanksgiving over? Next, the classes must figure out the best way to help others for all the holidays in December.
Thanks to Jamie and a few other students who didn't appreciate that Christmas overshadowed everything. The school is now having the classes figure out how to ensure everyone has a happy holiday no matter what they celebrate!"
"I'm quite pleased to hear James had fought for change. I've researched a few books on Judaism and its history. I found it quite delightful," Charlie spoke up happily.
Before Ceci could reply, her sister beat her to it. "Charlie? Why can't you read normal books for your age? My classmates say none of the older siblings read encyclopedias or dictionaries for fun. Instead, they read fantasy, adventure, or romance novels. You know, normal stuff."
"Felicity, that isn't a nice thing to say to your older brother," her mother reprimanded her. Yet Maddie secretly agreed with her youngest daughter. She didn't understand why her son behaved like an adult. He was only thirteen! It troubled her periodically. But she hadn't voiced these thoughts to her husband.
Unbeknownst to Maddie, her husband was also slightly concerned with Charlie acting so grown up. He expected Ceci to be the most mature. Yes, she was mature. But not to the point she forgot how to act like a kid.
Either way, neither parent felt this was the time or place to address that concern. So instead, they continued to converse about school and friends. They also took turns saying the things they were thankful for. After they finished, Ceci volunteered to clean up everything. Secretly she wanted to utilize her ghost powers to get things cleaned up discreetly. Her family agreed and left the kitchen.
Ceci did have some enjoyment in employing her abilities to help clean up. All in all, it was a nice Thanksgiving. Best of all? No ghosts to ruin it! That is what all of Peace Valley should be thankful for.
