Dauntless. My little brother had chosen Dauntless. As soon as I heard Marcus announce it I felt sick to my stomach. The plan was always that we would transfer, but not Dauntless, anywhere but Dauntless. The next minute went past in a blur and before I even realised what I had done, I watched the small drops of blood fall onto the hot coals of Dauntless.
My brother looked at me in shock as I walked towards him and the rest of Dauntless. I had gotten Erudite on my test; I was top of nearly all my classes at school. We both knew I wasn't Dauntless, but I didn't think he was either and I just couldn't leave my little brother to the wolves.
On first look you wouldn't think I was the older sibling, at best people thought we were twins, but I was nearly a whole year older, a day short to be exact. My birthday was today, the day of the choosing ceremony and his was yesterday.
The rest of the ceremony passes by in a blur and soon I am scaling the side of the train track. My brother holds out his hand as I reach the top and I grab it, letting him help me up.
"I could have done it myself" I tell him
"I know" he replies with a slight grin "but we help each other alright".
I nod at him and turn my head as I hear the train approaching, I notice all the Dauntless born running in the opposite direction and soon realise that the train isn't stopping. I tug on Hugo's arm to get his attention and we start running after the Dauntless and onto the train. The last carriage is filled with just transfers, except for one person in Dauntless uniform, but they aren't an initiate. The last person in is a small, thin Amity girl, though they are still taller than me. They only just make it, the platform disappearing just as they are pulled into the carriage by a couple of other Amity.
We all make small talk and introduce ourselves for a bit before the Dauntless in the corner speaks up, "Get ready!" they shout before jumping off the train. There's a mad rush to jump off the train before it gets past the target roof top, I stand back not wanting to be trampled, a sigh of relief leaving me as I watch Hugo land safely. Before I know it, it's just me and the small Amity girl left, she doesn't look like she's gonna jump.
"Give yourself a run up and you'll be on that roof before you know it" I tell her taking pity on her. I take a few steps back and start towards the carriage door, just as I'm about to jump, I feel someone tug on my wrist stopping me and I nearly fall out the train. It's the small Amity girl,
"I can't do it!" she exclaims
"Then don't. " I tell her bluntly before finally jumping onto the rooftop.
As a pick myself up off the gravel roof, I see the Amity girl being helped of the floor by her friends. Anger rushes through me and I make my way over to her.
"What the hell do you think you were doing" I shout at her
"I really am sorry" the girl responds feebly
"You could have killed me!" I continue, pushing her roughly
"Yeah but you made it fine didn't you" she replies as if that makes it okay
I go to push her again, but someone stops me,
"Just leave it Rory, its not worth it" Hugo tells me as he moves me away from the group of Amity, towards a group of Dauntless members stood facing everyone.
