Chapter 18: Shado

I took all of my inspiration for this character from the DCU. I found the Arrowverse version to be a shallow and hollow version of the real (comic) Shado. The fact that the writers decided to create a twin cheat as well… It made me want to scream. I let Mei be her own person for my story. The only child of Yao Fei. Shado went back to her origins.

ORIGIN:

Shado is the infant daughter of two Japanese immigrants who were interred in the Pacific Northwest. During their internment, government agents interrogated her parents to determine the location of hidden Yakuza gold sent over from Japan before the war. They failed while her parents were in the camps.

Some 15 years after her parents were released from the camps, these same men ruthlessly hunted down her parents and tortured her mother to death. They tortured her father until he gave them the location of the Yakuza gold. Then fled with the gold. Shado was just an infant at the time. Her father committed seppuku in shame for his failure.

The Yakuza took the infant girl child into their care. They raised her to be a weapon of revenge against the men who dishonored her blood. She was raised in every form of martial art and in Kyudo. The Japanese art of Archery. When she became a master of art, she was released to return honor to her family name by the Obabun of Tokyo.

As a child, she was given the last of the Horiyoshi Tattoos. It is a red dragon tattoo over her left archery arm to give her strength and balance. She has served as an assassin for the Tokyo Clan of the Yakuza at the discretion of the Obabun.

FAMILY:

Her father and mother came to America during World War II. They spent time in internment camps in the Pacific Northwest. As a young man, her father was interrogated by the US government. They failed to find any connections to him or the Yakuza, but several of their members kept track of him. 15 years later, he had married and celebrated the birth of his first child when the men found him a second time. They tortured his wife to death before him. They then tortured him until he broke.

Shado has no remaining family.

MOTIVATION:

Shado was born in America but has no memory of her birth parents. She was taken in by the Yakuza shortly after the death of her parents. She was raised by the Yakuza Clan of Tokyo and taught from a very young age that it was her duty to reclaim the honor of her family. She has been driven to excel at her studies in martial arts and archery to allow her to reclaim the honor of her family.

PERSONALITY:

Shado is a very calm person. She has been raised by her archery mentor. Because she has had the dedicated attention and praise of the one person she cared for the most, she did not feel the need to rebel against the strictures of her life. The few times she has seen the Obabun, he has always treated her mentor with great dignity. She did not realize that it was not respected for her person or skill, but because she was a beaten personality. She only learns later that her mentor fears the Obabun. Shado never learns to fear him. But she does learn to hate him.

NOTES:

I did not use any of the DCU/Green Arrow histories in this profile. Shado is older than our dear Oliver. Shado is Moira's age. That is due to the history that is provided for Shado in the DCU.
