The day before Thanksgiving is stressful for most families but for Jamie and Eddie, it was actually pretty relaxed. Since they'd gotten their assigned contributions to Thanksgiving dinner finished early, which consisted of a chocolate cake, cookies, and an apple pie, they decided to go out to Rockefeller Center and go ice skating. It was something that they'd been wanting to do for awhile and were surprised that they were able to get tickets last minute.
"You need some help, Ed?" Jamie asked, looking over at his wife to see her struggling to lace up her skates.
She huffed out a small laugh, "Yes please."
He finished lacing up his skates, then kneeled down in front of her to help. Eddie couldn't help but flash a soft smile at him. It was a small side of him that a lot of people didn't see. He would always help her with her shoes if she needed it and would help her take them off at the end of the day if her feet were sore. It was such a small gesture but something that she hoped would never stop.
"Too tight?" he asked, looking up at her after tying her skates.
She shook her head and gave him a thumbs up, "All good."
He stood up and held his hands out to help her stand.
"Woah," Eddie said, as standing up a little too quickly made her start to lose her footing.
Jamie immediately steadied her. "It would've been quite a story if you would've busted your butt and not even been out on the ice yet," he said jokingly.
She rolled her eyes and smacked his arm, "Whatever."
He smiled, tucked her arm into the crook of his and started to lead her out to the ice.
If Eddie was being honest, she was a little nervous for this. It had been quite a few years since she'd gone ice skating. The last time, she was on a date. Her date was the show-off type of guy. While they were skating, he bumped into her and took her off her feet, making her fall down pretty hard on her back. Instead of helping her up, her date stood there and laughed while a few bystanders helped her up. It's safe to say that moment helped her realize that it would be her last date with the guy and turned her off from ice skating for awhile.
When they got to the small entry way to get on the ice, Jamie stepped on first before taking Eddie's hand and helping her.
"Careful," he cautioned as she stepped over the small threshold.
Once she got on the ice, Jamie kept a hold of her hand.
"There's a lot of people here," he said, looking around. "I say that we just stick together."
"I'm good with that."
He nodded and started to skate while keeping a tight grip on her hand. There was quite a few people to get around but eventually, he and Eddie were both in sync with their skating.
"This is nice," Eddie said after a few minutes. "It's been a long time since I've done this."
"Me too," he agreed. "The last time I was here, it was me, Danny, and Erin following Nicky on her date."
She widened her eyes at him, "Really?"
"Mhmm," he nodded. "I didn't want to come but Danny made me since Erin made him. Nicky and her date were eating at the café connected to the rink. Since the rink has a perfect view inside the restaurant, Erin paid two hours for all three of us to skate. Let's just say that I pretty much had to carry Danny back to the car when were done."
Eddie laughed, "Oh geez. I can see that. So I guess that is what our future daughter will have to look forward to?"
"Not to that extreme but pretty damn close," he replied. "Danny said that if we have a girl, he's going to be locked and loaded at all times."
"I believe it."
"When was the last time you were here?" he asked curiously. "Didn't you say that you were on a date?"
"I was," she confirmed. "Hopefully this time around will be better with you. Actually... I'm positive it will be."
"It was that bad?"
"Well... yeah. One World Observatory had just opened and he kept saying that he had a buddy who would get us in for free. I was so looking forward to it. When we got there, it turned out that he didn't have a buddy so we couldn't go in. Then, we decided to come here. He kept trying to show off how fast he could skate and pretty much left me by myself. One time when he was passing by me, he bumped into me and knocked me over. I fell down on my back and it hurt so bad. Instead of helping me up, he just stood there and laughed for the longest time. I guess he didn't realize that he was the one who made me fall. A few other people had to help me up. And even when he was dropping me off at my apartment, he was still laughing about it."
Jamie gritted his teeth and shook his head, "Don't tell me you went on another date with the guy..."
"Of course not," she confirmed. "I should've known after the disaster of a first date we had but I gave him another chance."
He leaned over and pressed a kiss to the side of her head, "I can promise you that this will be a much better date than that one."
Eddie smiled, "I know. Thank you."
They skated around for awhile longer until their time was up. They got off the ice, took off their skates, then went to return them.
"It's still kind of early," Eddie said, looking at the time on her watch as they walked away from Rockefeller Center to get to their car that was parked a few blocks away. "What should we do now?"
"Well... I may not have a guy who can get me into the observatory but I do know a nice place with a good view of the city."
A little while later, Eddie looked around curiously as Jamie parked the car on a small side street in Lenox Hill.
"What are we doing here?" she asked.
"You'll see," he replied.
He got out of the car and she followed. She circled around the car and met him in the front. Then, he interlinked their fingers and started walking. A few minutes later, they walked up on one of the most amazing views of the city that she'd ever seen. It was small, secluded part of the East River Greenway. It showed their city at its best and reminded her why she loved living here.
"Jamie..." she said, her voice in awe. "How come you've never told me about this place? It's beautiful."
He gave a small shrug, "I don't know. But I come here quite a bit when I need some time to myself or just a moment to think." He moved around behind her and looped his arms around her waist, resting his chin on top of her shoulder. "You want to know what I'm thankful for this year?"
"What are you thankful for?" she asked.
"A lot of things. Dad and Pop are still healthy. My nephews and niece are all doing well. I'm thankful for Erin... and I guess Danny too. But what I'm most thankful for is to have you."
Eddie felt a small blush rise upon her cheeks, "You're a charmer, Bub."
"I try," he joked. "But it's true. I'm thankful that I get to spend another holiday with you. As much as I love my family, my holidays are a lot brighter with you."
Eddie closed her eyes and leaned back against him with a smile. Then, she turned and pressed a quick kiss to the side of his mouth. As she started to turn away, he quickly put a hand on her cheek and turned her back to him so they could meet for a proper kiss.
"Do you want to know what I'm thankful for?" she asked once they broke apart.
"What?"
"I'm so thankful that you're still here with me... alive, healthy and walking on your own two feet," she said, stroking his arms that were around her waist. "That's what makes it the best Thanksgiving for me."
The shooting happened a few months ago but for Eddie, she remembered it like it was yesterday. Those long hours where she didn't know if he was going to make it or be able to walk out of the hospital on his own two feet were traumatizing. But now looking at her husband and seeing that he was happy, healthy, and still with her made her the most thankful of all.
"I'm happy to be here too," he responded softly, tightening his arms around her. "And to be here with you... makes it even better."
She looked back at him and smiled, "Happy Thanksgiving, Jamie."
Jamie smiled back at her, "Happy Thanksgiving, Ed."
