Chapter 23

April 1941,

In the quiet of an Oxford office, Roberta Fogg was sitting with her cousin. Lacy was a month short of her marriage. They were again working late, trying to wrap up her work before she left.

They made a great team. With Lacy's knowledge of languages and Roberta's decryption skills, they had cracked six German field codes in the time Roberta had joined. The ship-to-shore codes, however, were not decipherable. A rumored encryption machine the allies had been trying to get for months generated them in a random pattern. Both cousins itched to crack open one of those.

Loren was waiting for them at a pub nearby. He had rented a house near Oxford to be closer to his sister and cousin after Roberta took up studies. It didn't take him a week to find out the truth about his sister's work and Roberta's new assignment. He had not complained… much. Their brush with death had given them all a pronounced need to be near each other. Old complaints and verbal banter disappeared in their renewed appreciation for life.

Just as they were about to leave, three men burst into the office. "Lacy, Roberta!" Frank called out. "We have it! They found one!"

In Frank's hands was a large box labeled TOP SECRET. He was followed into the room by two Army security officers.
