Kimberly came awake in a rush, but regretted coming to consciousness. Her head was pounding. Jason was patting her face softly. A soft groan escaped her. Kira was standing to the side with blood on her shirt. Ethan and Connor were standing close by. A familiar smell wrapped around her that she associated with Jason. He'd gotten her message.
"What happened?" she croaked softly.
"Some guy dressed in black jumped you," Connor told her. "We sent him running."
Things came rushing back to her then. Then confusion washed over her on how the trio knew she needed help.
"How did?"
"Ethan was alerted to the attack via the security system you had him install. He alerted us and we came running."
"Thanks for the save," she murmured softly.
The three of them dipped their heads at her thanks. They knew that she'd been important to their teammate and leader so they'd do what they could.
"What did they want?" Jason asked.
"Don't know. He wasn't exactly laying out his master plan while he was doing a throw down."
Jason gave her a stern look which she just glared back at him. Then closed her eyes as a grimace crossed her features at the pounding in her head.
"Upstairs is trashed," Jason told her. "Not sure what they were looking for."
"Great," she murmured softly.
"Did they give any clue on who they were?" Kira asked.
"No. He called me the Crane. He recognized the Dragonzord summoning song and told me I was lucky my death wasn't coming yet by his hand."
As she was about ready to say something else her phone went off. All of them stared at her. Then she remembered she'd been supposed to meet Merrick for a ride later. She didn't know how long she'd been out and the Lunar Wolf was probably freaking out.
"That's probably Merrick. Can you talk to him Jason?"
The call to sleep was calling her name but she knew she still had things to get done today. Connor handed his phone to Jason at his answered it for her. Kimberly leaned against Jason and let him deal with the Lunar Wolf Ranger. Her mind wandered trying to figure out who'd attacked her and who was pulling the strings on this new threat. Jason hung up and looked down at her.
"How do you know him?"
"Met the Wild Force team and Princess Shayla in my travels."
"He's worried. Of course we all are."
"They're always worried and so are you."
"That's normally is your thing," Jason reminded her.
She flinched at those words remembering a time and place where Tommy said the same thing to her.
"Yeah once upon a time."
Running upstairs had all of them tensing as they rushed down the stairs. Connor and the others got into a fighting stance ready to lend a hand. Trent was standing there panting. He froze seeing what was in front of him.
"What happened?"
"Some guy jumped Kimberly and trashed the house," Connor told him.
"Do we know what they're looking for?"
Kimberly watched Trent in confusion. Something was off about him but she wasn't sure what it was. She'd only met the White Dino Thunder Ranger a couple of times, but it was enough to know something was up. The other three's reactions also was telling.
"What is it?" Jason asked. "I know that look."
"It's nothing."
The look in Jason's eyes told her he didn't believe her, but he'd let it go. He knew her well enough to ask not in the present company. Kimberly looked at Trent and then looked at Jason and gave him a covert nod. A tilt of his head showed that he understood. The Dino Thunder Rangers left promising to come back the next day to help with the cleanup at her insistence. As Trent was about to leave Jason grabbed him from behind and slammed him backwards onto the ground.
"I suggest you stay down and answer her questions," Jason warned.
"You're going to tell us who you are before I turn you over to an unforgiving audience, and trust me I know quite a few of those."
Trent frowned as he watched her.
"How did you know?"
"Scar on your face and you're older. I would've made more of an effort to look like Trent if you wanted to blend in. Is he dead?"
"No, that would be kind of counterproductive."
"Depends on the situation," she told him.
"I'm not your enemy."
The look in her eyes told him she didn't believe him one iota.
"I'm not as forgiving as I used to be Trent. So start explaining."
"I'm from another dimension."
Due to their experiences as Power Rangers she believed that at least for the moment. "Where I'm from I'm the only good Ranger left. An Evil took hold and destroyed all Rangers except for myself and one other. The other serves the Evil."
"Was that who jumped me? This Evil or his minion?"
"The Ranger probably."
"Who is it?"
"I'm not sure who it is under all the dark cloth. Wes sent me here in hopes of finding a way to bring down the Evil before he died, but I have failed thus far. There are whispers of a sword and crystal that can bring him down."
Kimberly looked at him. Her eyes narrowed at his words. She looked up at Jason and gave him a curt nod. He backed up and Trent slowly rose to his feet.
"I don't like this Kim."
"I don't either. Why is he after me?"
"He thinks you might know of or have possession of them."
"Who told you that?"
"Dr O did before he died."
Kimberly scoffed at his words. She knew better than that.
"Now that I don't believe."
"What do you mean?"
"Even if we weren't together he wouldn't tell you or anyone else even if I knew or even if have possession of what this evil is looking for. He'd rather…"
Kimberly shook at the thought. His death might've just made sense to her now. Jason watched her knowing something was up. Trent looked down."Is that the reason he died because of this sword and crystal?"
"Probably. This Evil will stop at nothing to get his hands on those items."
"What do these things do aside from bestowing Power Ranger powers on someone?"
"It's said the power is pure evil, but others say it's pure good. No one has seen them except for Dr O. All others that have laid eyes on them have died in one way or another."
She looked at him with a sad expression. These revelations were taking their toll on her heart.
"I suggest you get out of this house and come up with something better than guessing Trent."
Kimberly and Jason watched Trent leave the property. She was leaning against the front porch over hang pillar. She was deep in thought about the entire thing. No one could ever know what she had in her possession but hidden really well. Ethan and Billy knew about the case but something told her not to let them know what was in it. She wasn't sure who she could trust now knowing that at least one Rangers from another dimension was a threat to her and the others. This Evil she had a bad feeling it was another Ranger. Tommy had left it to her and she couldn't understand why that was. There were so many others that could be trusted with this and yet he trusted her to do this in his stead.
"I don't like it Jason."
"Neither do I."
"Should we inform the others?" she asked softly.
"I don't know, Kim."
"If this Evil gains those things he might do a hostile takeover like in his own world. We can't let that happen."
"Then we're not exactly sure who this traitor is or who's pulling the strings."
"This is true but in all honesty whoever they are isn't a traitor now, or at least I hope not."
Jason led her back inside and looked around at all the damage. Kimberly shook her head and moved forward to start trying to get some semblance of order together. Jason grabbed her arm.
"We need to talk."
"About?"
"Trust."
"You honestly think I'd openly tell them anything."
"I guess not. He's not here to protect you anymore."
She snorted at his words. This conversation was vague for a reason.
"It makes me sad that he isn't but I can take care of myself when needed."
"When will you rely on those who'd come help you?"
"When the time is right."
Jason snorted at her words. She stumbled a bit feeling a bit dizzy.
"You're lucky you didn't get a concussion with that hit."
"Maybe you should remind the bad guys I'm not to be touched."
"Jason?" a voice called followed by a knock.
"Door's open Kat."
A soft cuss escaped her as she saw the damage.
"I came as soon as I heard."
"You guys really didn't have to do this."
"We're friends Kimberly," Kat told her.
She had to admit that when Kat and Jason started dating she'd been as supportive as she could have been. The two of them hit off and had been married a couple years. She'd been away when they got married, but she was happy for them none the less.
"Something's coming and even the newbies felt it," Jason told her.
"Does it have something to do with this?"
She gestured to the mess.
"Yes, they're looking for something Tommy found or had."
"Did they get it?"
"Not really sure right now."
Kimberly looked around the house sadly. Her eyes took in everything and the mess all around. Before she could move both Jason and Kat wrapped her in a hug. She was fighting the tears.
"How long have you been away from home?" Kat finally asked.
"The day he died."
"Kimberly…" Jason admonished.
"I didn't want to leave the house unguarded."
"What's…"
"Command Center for the Dino Thunder team."
"Oh."
A loud neigh echoed through the house. Jason smirked. They went outside and Merrick sat there on a horse. With two others beside him.
"Jason," Merrick acknowledged.
"Merrick," Jason dipped his head in greeting. "Merrick this is my wife Kat. Kat this is Merrick the Lunar Wolf Ranger from the Wild Force team."
"It's nice to meet you."
He gave a curt nod towards her. Kimberly stalked down the steps and greeted the buckskin paint. The rust red horse with a blonde mane and tail came up and started nuzzling her too. A laugh escaped her at their greeting.
"You didn't have to bring them here Merrick."
"Tell me what's going on," Merrick demanded seeing the blood on her shirt.
"Trouble from another dimension."
"They do that?"
"Yes, but the Dino Thunder team came to my rescue."
"You shouldn't be here by yourself if there's a threat to you."
"Merrick I can take care of myself."
His look told her otherwise. She snorted at his words and moved to the paints side and hauled herself up on his broad back and grabbed the loose reins and took off into the trees. The other horse followed.
Merrick went to follow her but Jason grabbed the reins on Merrick's horse to stop him.
"Let her go. She needs to be alone."
"That's what's gotten her into trouble before."
Jason looked to where she vanished.
"This time is different. This time the fate of the world might be in her hands, and she's probably going to have to do it alone."
"It's bad enough she had to take care of his death, but now he's put her in danger."
"I knew him Merrick. He wouldn't have done that if he thought for a moment she couldn't handle it. We're just overprotective of her because of who she is."
"She'll need us before this is over," Kat told them. "We can't crowd her right now. She's putting on a brave face to hide the deep hurt."
"He shouldn't have done it regardless," Merrick growled before turning and going back the way he came.
Jason shook his head and followed Kat back into the house to wait for Kimberly's return.
