Welcome back to Guarding Vale: A VPD Story

Now, before I get into the usual things. Let me give some background. This chapter has actually been in the works since last year. It's one that I have been longing to write since half way through the Academy series. As of recent I've been active on the Cardinposting subreddit which has given me a greater love for my favorite ginger bully. However this story is a Jaune focused story, and I want to do him justice along with addressing some of the faults and plot holes left by RWBY writing from the LEO, civilian perspective, and reader perspective.

In this chapter, I shall attempt to fix one of the many bad writing decisions in the show, not to mention one which killed Jaune for me in Volumes 2-3. How? By adding some actual substance into it. Anyways…

Onto some Reviewer Responses!

Monster King: Thank you very much!

simm36: Esto estaba destinado a ser un ligero descanso de los grandes éxitos de los capítulos anteriores. Blake y RWBY aún no han llegado, pero no se preocupen, llegarán muy pronto después de este capítulo.

ReDestrobo: I'm glad you enjoy it too. RWBY, fails to capture the inner thoughts and gags they've put their characters in. There is depth and nuance in each of them. Hunters in Training they are still young, but our growing officer needed to mature up fast.

Jaune, albeit not to the greatest effect, tries to woo Weiss with his guitar skills. However, beyond that it's never touched or played with despite Mile's talent for singing. So rather than leaving that be, I want to build it up and show progress rather than jumping from bit to bit. Giving him some ambition for himself outside of his duties as an Officer.

Port and Velvet were both of my favorites and shoutout to Firefly on bringing up Port in our brainstorming discussions last year-round December. I did hint at Velvet's identity in Chapter 11: The First Beat. Port would surely appreciate a good Tavern but no worries about the corruption. For Port is a Man's Man. But don't worry, we'll be seeing a Yellow haze soon.

DISCLAIMER: I do own a limited edition Pumpkin Pete's Cereal Box signed by Pyrrah Nikos, but I do not own the RWBY Franchise, these characters, or any of the references mentioned here.

Heading in with his backpack and dry-cleaned uniform. Jaune had finally gotten used to that early morning routine. Quick breakfast, a shower, and a shave after noticing some fuzz growing on his chin. Traffic hadn't been too bad so he wasn't in an all too grumpy mood. However, a more pressing matter was occupying his thoughts. The Gala Raffle was set to be drawn for the Downtown District. Even despite the overwhelming odds, Jaune was still hoping to get something. The locker room was filled with the common chatter between officers from the night watch. Cookey stories about a drunken shopkeeper fending off robbers to the sight of a nevermore over Vale. Which only turned out to be a paper kite that had gone loose during the day.

As Jaune was changing, Pat came strolling in with bags under his eyes. The man was pale in the face and it turned a few heads in the room. Enough for one of his pals to speak up. A patrol officer named Bell. "Woah there Pat, you look like you've had the life sucked out of you by a Grim. What's the matter?"

Turning his head, strained eyes stared into Bell. Actually making the man shiver slightly. "Boy…" He muttered.

It was all he could really say as he marched to his locker and began to change into his uniform. The rest of the officers all looked to each other sympathetically as they tried to remain quiet. However Jaune was still trying to put together what Pat had even meant. Leaning over to one of his neighbors, Jaune whispered.

"Hey, what does he mean by Boy? Pat doesn't have any sons." Jaune asked, a still puzzled expression present on his face.

The neighboring officer, Mr. Blanc. Whispered in return with a strained voice in emphasis of the situation. "His daughter, she brought home a boy."

Immediately Jaune's eyes widened and his head began to nod. No other words were needed to convey the weight put upon the man's shoulders. Glancing over to Pat the man already had his uniform on. Somehow, he was still strong enough to get the job. Which astounded Jaune. Thinking back to his own Dad, he grimaced at the nightmares he went through. Six girls probably would have given him gray hair but he was still a golden blonde. Shaking the thought from his head he buttoned up his uniform and headed out of the locker room with his briefcase to the briefing room.

"Oh and Hill, we've got reports of a thief in your area. M.O. is that they strike during the noontime. Jewelry and other valuables. A witness reports a work van has been making rounds in the community. So keep an eye out for that."

"Got it, Sir." Officer Hill replied as he wrote down the information.

Finishing up the bulletins for the day. Lieutenant Kilp pulled out a final sheet of paper from his folder. The room came to a standstill as Kilp cleared his throat. Before reading aloud.

"The Police Gala Raffle results are in my hand here ladies and gentlmen. We know this is a huge thing and the board went overboard on the location but don't worry your heads. There will be more in the future. Now, congratulations to our very own Pat Malloy and Dona Poppy!"

The room erupted into cheers and claps as they patted the backs of both of them. Dona was bashful at the news, waving off the cheers with a wave of her hand. Pat who was still slightly lifeless nodded his head with a grin to his face.

Once the celebrations settled down, the Lieutenant looked to the officers. "You two can collect your tickets at the end of the day. But for now, get outta here! There are things to do, people to protect. You're not paid to sit here."

With that the room was dispersed as they went out to the lot.

Jaune was at the wheel for today, to save Pat the trouble of dealing with boy trouble at home. Heading down the street Jaune glanced over to Pat who was scanning the area around them as he drove. Turning back to the road he spoke up. "So, how do you think Laura will react?"

"I don't really know; this would be her third Gala. The last was kind of the same as the first but this time. I think one was great, two were fantastic, but three? It's going to be the same thing all over again. Yeah, it's a big venue but it'll be the same as always."

"Mhm I can see, what usually happens at these Galas?" Jaune asked as he came to a stop at a light.

"Oh just some speeches, fundraising, some auctions. Dancing and socializing. It's just some big party to get money and donations for the city and the department. Oh not to mention the celebrities. I even got a signature once from Del Molé when he performed with the band. That was a real treat, Mom was a huge fan of his back then so she went wild."

Jaune gave it a thought and chuckled. "Sounds like a swell time. But to be honest, the whole speech must sound like a drag."

Patrick snickered as he looked back to the last Gala he attended. "You have no idea, last time me and Laura went it was an election year and so there were so many long-winded speeches and politicians making so many promises. We were just dried out by the end of it- Hey wait a second."

Jaune tapped his fingers against the wheel, turning his head to Pat with a pause. "Yeah? Spot something?"

"No no… It's just I got this funny idea. Saddling you up with those tickets huh? I think Laura would like day for her and a nice night out compared to the Gala. What do you say?"

Jaune was lost for words at that point. Gasping and trying to string something together only for pat to shush him. Turning him back to the road. He'd know he would have to make a call later once he got the chance.

When the Lieutenant said that the department was going overkill on the venue, he wasn't kidding. They were able to secure the grand ballroom in the Valerian Palace, former residence of the last King of Vale.

Lines of cars pulled up the pathway to the grand palace. The marble and listening glass seemed to break through the orange dusk that seemed to bask the sky. Cobbled paths lead to the entrance of the grand building. A red carpet was laid from the cobblestone road to the gilded entryway. There, guests were dropped off in big SUVs and Limousines. While he and Cardin were in his Jasmin, bored all the while as they slowly shuffled with the rest of the line. They needed to park the car at the main lot area but were hampered by the traffic. Cardin sat behind the wheel, seeing red as he stared down the tinted windows of the limo.

"Gah this is stupid. We're waiting on how many limos till we get past the main drop off area?"

"Ten…"

"Ten? TEN? Who's coming here, the entire Council and their families?"

"Yeah."

"Oh. Yeah, we're going to be here while…"

Jaune sighed and lowered the window on the front passenger side. Getting out of his seat slightly he leaned his torso out the window to check how long the line was. Looking forward he saw that the line was starting to move steadily. Glancing back, he saw the line of cars carrying special guests. Sliding back into his seat he leaned back and decided to nap things off till they got to the carpark.

Parking the car amongst the others lined up on a gravel clearing. The two had affixed their peaked caps as the helmets were for regular duties. Their uniforms shined as if they were back at the Academy. Perhaps they themselves had gone overboard in preparing themselves but being two Probational Officers with tickets to the gala was a fair excuse to ham it up a little. Passing through the red carpet they sidestepped the celebrities and photographers which were practically hounding a red-haired girl in a red dress. They all clamored for her to look into the camera as they flashed. Though with the amount of people talking it was hard enough to hear anything tangible. The two couldn't help but look for a few moments at her and the long line of big names. Though they were hogging up the image for the photographers, so they were ushered inside by an officer standing guard near the entrance. Being pushed into the grand entrance hall of the Palace.

The hall was basked in a warm golden glow from chandeliers above them on the ceiling. From wall to wall, golden trimming and upholstery lined the path to the ballroom. White marble columns and dark oak floors. A royal red carpet laid out to guide guests and to add even more gravitas to the scene. To the side some officers were taking photos with their wives and plus ones to the occasion. Though a few just quietly strolled over towards the ballroom. Cardin and Jaune couldn't believe the sight before them. It was absolutely, magical.

Stepping forward, Cardin turned about as he looked at the palace. "I remember going here on field trips at school but it looks so much more…"

"Elegant? Regal? Refined?"

"Beautiful." Cardin bluntly

Jaune paused but nodded. Also taking in the sights around them. "It's hard not to agree with the assessment. I mean look at the carpet. It's got to be Mistrali silk! They really did go overboard."

Crossing his arms, Cardin followed the trail led by the carpet. "Well yeah, Mom kept telling me about the times when Dad was invited to the gala. He always brought her along, but those were held in some big dance hall or event space in the city. Never the Palace.

"Maybe 'cause they haven't hosted it at the palace for I don't know, several hundred years? Unless your Dad was some immortal being who's been in the department for that long."

"Mhm I guess you're right about that. Though I suppose another thing to look forward to is picking up."

Jaune gave a deadpan expression to Cardin. This was one of the last things he wanted hear right now. Especially at a high stakes event like this. "Oh my Gods you're still going on about that? Cardin I've told you time and time again I would like to take it easy. Just, Nice and Easy."

Cardin stopped Jaune in his tracks. Placing both of his hands on his shoulders as he stared him down. "Jauney Boy, you are a very eligible bachelor. Tall, strong, in uniform, and employed with a decent salary too. You are walking bait for any girl or woman who'd give you a passing glance." Cardin replied as he patted Jaune on the back.

"Cardin are you going mad?" Jaune said with worry in his tone.

"No I am not. All I'm saying is that this could be an opportunity for you. You want to take it nice and easy, so this is the right kind of place to do it. The folks here got to be classy so I'd assume your method of approach should fit in. Honestly the proposition of a bumpkin like you wooing an uptown girl almost sounds like a fairytale."

"Has Alice been forcing you to watch some of her chick flicks?"

"Oh, shut up, we're at the ballroom. Straighten up and let's head on in."

Location: Valeian Palace | The Fall Ballroom

"Corner Pocket" by Count Basie starts playing.

Approaching the opened double doors, they walked in and slowed their steps for a moment. The ballroom was decorated in shades of blues. Lights illuminated the room and seemed to give that evening hue. Lit up by amber lights over to the side on a stage was a big band. Playing tunes which perhaps Cardin would have only heard from his grandmother's phonograph, but Jaune was all too enraptured with.

Cardin turned his head over to Jaune. "Now this is pretty swanky huh?"

"Kind of reminds me of the local high school dance in Ansel. Minus the band, and all the real fancy stuff."

"Lighten up Jaune, we're swinging it with the big cats." Cardin said with a bit of gusto. Earning a snicker from Jaune at his vocabulary.

The two made their way over to the tables. Looking for their seats they found their table they then moseyed on over to the crowd of socializing guests. Hoping to find some friendly faces before heading to their table. Out of the blue the two were jumped on by one Sergeant Alicia Moore. Grinning from ear to ear she smiled at her two former Cadets and placed a hand on either shoulder.

"Well now it looks like two Cadets- I mean Probies have snuck their way into the Department Gala. I wonder what would happen if I were to report this to the Captain?" She had a mischievous air around her. The two shivered slightly as they were brought back to basics.

The two stood at attention with their hands behind their back. Jaune was first to defend himself and Cardin. However he was quite flustered at first by the accusation. "Sir, we didn't sneak in, we were invited here. R-Right Cardin?"

"Jaune every man for himself. You snuck me in and its only fair you get the blame." Cardin said with a straight face, playing along with the gag.

Sergeant Moore and laughed happily patted Cardin on the back. "Good on you Probie! But you're coming with me, I've got to introduce you to some fellas who knew your Pop. Once I told them about you they said they'd love the chance to meet you."

Cardin stopped and let his shoulders relax. Nodding he smiled and turned to Jaune. "Ah- well Jaune I suppose I'll see you at the table once things get started.

Jaune, understandingly nodded and smiled back in reassurance. "Alright then, I'll see if they got any light refreshments here. Grab you one for later."

The two gave a nod before separating. Slipping away to the refreshments table he saw the drinks laid out there and picked up two bottles of Petesi. A worker behind the table reached out and popped the caps off. Catching the caps and nodding to Jaune.

"Oh uhm, thank you." Jaune said, caught off guard by the action. Though given the regal nature of the Gala he shouldn't have been too surprised by service.

"You're very welcome, Sir." They replied with a smile.

Just as Jaune was turning around an arm reached out to the bottles as well. It bumped his sightly though luckily none of the soda felt out. As he heard the bottle hissing, Jaune glanced towards the direction the arm came from he was met with long red hair, kept together with a hairband of fine Mistrali bronze. Emerald green eyes shimmered slightly at the bit of light shining near her. She had lightly tanned skin wish looked lush to the touch. Though her bare arms and shoulders showed muscle development. Donning a long red dress with a white scarf wrapped around her neck. Turning to Jaune, she was flustered with her lack of manners. Replying with a soft voice which calmed his nerves.

"I'm sorry" she said. "I did not mean to bump into you. I only hope that you are alright, along with your drink."

"No, I'm fine Ma'am. Apology accepted." Jaune said as he accepted the apology. Smiling to reassure her worries.

The girl seemed to look at him with scrutinizing eyes. He couldn't get a peep out, much less muster any words to ask as to her visual interrogation.

"Aren't you a little too young to be a Police Officer?"

Jaune felt a weight lifted off of him as he stood up straighter and nodded. "I am on probation, but I am an Officer. I graduated from the Academy about three months back.

"Oh, I see, it must have been quite the experience." Her expression lightened at the revelation.

"Yes, Ma'am. It was, but I learned a lot of valuable lessons. All for the sake of keeping people safe.

Their brief conversation was suddenly interrupted by the tapping of a microphone. Followed by a voice as a woman stood at the podium.

"Ladies and Gentlemen if you would please head to your tables. We'll begin the opening ceremony for the Department Gala in just a few moments. Thank you."

Once the announcement was over Jaune looked at the girl with a bit of a chuckle. "I suppose we ought to head to our tables now."

"Of course." She said with a calm tone. "I hope you enjoy the Gala, Officer."

"As do I, Ma'am." Jaune replied with a nod of his cap.

The two then went off to their respective seats. Jaune rejoined Cardin at their table and handed him the bottle of soda. Looking at their table they were seated with other officers from the downtown district. Some light conversation sprung up before the ballroom quieted down. The drummer began to play a drum roll as an announcer spoke from somewhere. Introducing the MC for the evening whom after getting a few zingers off, introduced Commissioner of the Vale Police Department. The gray-haired man walked slowly to the stage, assisted by a cane. All officers present quickly stood up from their seats. At the raise of his hand they were all seated as he began his speech for the evening.

"Officers, Councilmembers, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Francis J. Miller, Police Commissioner for the Vale Police Department, and I'd thank you all for attending tonight's gala. All of the proceeds will go towards the Valeian Orphanage Fund, the Valeian Families Fund, and for the Tiny Tikes Toy Drive. Tonight, marks a significant moment in our history. Tonight marks the 500th Police Department Gala and the 499th Anniversary of the founding of our Department. Appropriately we've returned back to the original venue of that first Gala. Though I do see that me and other officers aren't dressed in armor nor in the finest cloth our house could afford. But in cotton uniforms with nickel plated buttons."

He glanced at the crowd. Looking into the faces of the attendants.

"We've come a long way from our origins as knights without a King. For we no longer serve one man but the people of this great Kingdom. Present here, have officers here from every precinct in the city and every division in the Kingdom. Alongside them are their friends, relatives, and spouses who have to put up with them every time they come home smelling like a sauna." This garnered a decent laugh out of the guests. Waiting for things to settle down he then continued. "Each and every individual from the Highway Patrol officer to the clerk in the evidence room, serves with dignity at their post. So tonight let us celebrate all corners of the Department and to the continued service of the Vale Police Department. Custodire Vale!"

Applause rang throughout the ballroom before things simmered down. The MC for the evening came back on stage smiling at the speech. "Ladies and Gentlemen dinner will be served in a few moments. For now I'll turn it over to VPD Band here to set the mood for the rest of the evening."

"How About You" by Les Brown plays.

Jaune and Cardin were sipping bottles of pop as they listened to their senior officers talk it out amongst themselves. Cardin glanced over to Jaune and nudged his shoulder. "Say, you think you got the moves to pair it with this kind of music? I mean I know you can dance and I know you listen to this kind of stuff but can you?"

"Lucky for you they didn't. My sister Susan, a year older than me, took dancing classes all her life. She's actually studying at an arts school in Patch. Anyways she taught me some things she learned. Particularly this kind dancing."

"From the radio dramas to swing dancing I can't tell if you're a grandfather or not. Suppose it must be that frontier air out there." Cardin said as he kicked back a little. Sipping his bottle of Petesi.

Jaune couldn't help but chuckle at the notion. Replying "Well someone doesn't appreciate the classics as much as I do."

"It's not that I don't like the classics, I just don't listen to your classics. I listen to The Tumbling Rocks, White Sabbath, The What, Organicla." Cardin said as played the air guitar. "Now that's music."

Jaune paused at he listened to the names Cardin said. Smiling at him as he nodded. "Oh I never realized that. Guess I misjudged your taste in music, Cardin. But- Wait hold on I smell food."

This caused the two to turn their heads over towards waiters walking amongst the tables with trays of food. A welcome sight after waiting so long for dinner.

Time: 6:30 PM

"Opus One" by Tommy Dorsey plays.

With the sound of dinner wrapping up, guests stood up and began to mingle about the ballroom. Most opted for the open dance floor where couples danced to the music being played. For the dynamic duo? Just walking around the ballroom. They weren't in their element, much less in a position to socialize with the more elite of Vale. So they went from group to group listening in. In short, it was boring, an outright snooze fest. The Gala felt more like security, though stopping by a group of tables, they spotted a familiar face. To their surprise, Professor Port was pulling in a crowd with another wild and great story of his. Finding nothing else to do they walked over to join the group listening in. Only for the story to come to a close with a bit of applause for the Professor. Though to their delight he noticed them and reached out for them.

"Ah Officers! It is wonderful to see you here." Port said with a delighted expression as he motioned them over.

The two stepped forward, bottles in their hand with a bit of a sheepish expression at the sudden outing. Jaune rose his hand and returned the greeting. "It's good to see you Professor." Cardin nodding in agreement.

The man looked to the two curiously. Pondering for a moment before asking. "Now if memory serves me right, as always it does. You two are Probational Officers. Yet you two have tickets to the Gala tonight?"

"Oh, well you see Professor. Jaune's partner here won tickets in the raffle for our Division. Though he gifted them to Jaune and went out with his wife." Cardin said with a motion to Jaune who nodded at the explanation.

The professor gave an "Aha!" in response before nodding. Stroking his mustache as he turned to the rest of the ballroom. "I hope you have been enjoying the evening so far."

"It's fine, Sir." Jaune said. "The Palace is a really beautiful venue to host the Gala in. Makes me feel royal."

"Ah it certainly does feel like that, my boy. Which brings something to mind, I must introduce you two to a remarkable young woman. I am sure you two will get a treat out of meeting. Come, come." The portly man said as he led them to another side of the ballroom.

A man with grey hair, a dark suit with a green shirt, and a cane stood. Talking to a young woman with red hair and a red dress. Jaune rose his eyebrows at the realization of who she was. The girl he met near the refreshments table earlier. He never got her name, but he would learn it eventually. Next to him, Cardin was almost in a star struct like state. Though upon the Professor nearing the man he called out.

"Ozpin, Miss Nikos! If you will excuse me for a moment." This turned the heads of the two. "I'd like to introduce you to some fine Officers here. Acquaintances of mine and Miss Scartalina's from the Griffin."

Ozpin turned and nodded. Giving an apologetic look to Miss Nikos who seemed to stay. Looking towards Jaune in particular, having remembered the small meeting prior to the start of the Gala. "And who might these Officers be?"

Port turned to Jaune and Cardin and motioned them to introduce themselves. Jaune nodding and stepping up. "Officer Jaune Arc, Sir." Cardin followed suit "Officer Cardin Winchester, Sir."

Port smiled and patted Jaune's back. "He's Nicholas' boy, remember him?" Which got Ozpin thinking for a moment. "I remember him. It's wonderful to see that he's settled down. Anyways my name is Professor Ozpin and I am the Headmaster of Beacon Academy."

Turning to Miss Nikos she nodded for a moment. Snapping back to reality before introducing herself with a small bow of her head. "Pyrrha Nikos."

Jaune looked to her and could not help but feel something. At least now he had a name to put with a face. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Ma'am."

Cardin nodded, smiling, and shaking slightly. "It is Ma'am. Me and my girlfriend are huge fans?" The statement drawing some embarrassment from Pyrrha but some confusion from Jaune.

"Huh? Wait you and Alice are her fans? Am I missing something here?" Jaune said. Though this drew a bit of shock from Cardin and Pyrrha. Causing the former to place a hand on Jaune's shoulder with a bit of concern. "Jaune, you don't know who Pyrrha Nikos is? 4 Time Mistral Tournament Champion and spokesperson of Pumpkin Pete's? I thought you had a Pumpkin Pete hoodie?"

Jaune at the mention of his hoodie felt a bit of blush crawl upon his face but he waved it off. "You realize I don't eat that stuff, it's unhealthy. Besides, I got it as a kid after sending in box tops. But was too big for me when I got it…"

"He is right you know; it is very unhealthy. One of the more regretful sponsorships I have the honor of representing." Pyrrha said with a giggle in her voice. "But it's always nice to see fans, especially in the Department."

"Oh I have GOT to tell Alice this." Cardin said as he went off to find some reception in the building. As his scroll signal was low from the design. Orpin and Port had left the trio, now duo, to their own devices. Leaving Jaune and Pyrrha alone. Leaving quite the silence between the two.

Looking towards Pyrrha, Jaune did his best to salvage the situation. Starting some light conversation with her. "So, where in Mistral are you from?"

"Argus, it's a city in the North. It's not as big as Mistral but it's a very lovely place. In a way the buildings look like Vale." Pyrrha said with a bit of pride in her voice.

Jaune at the thought smiled at the revelation. "Oh, my sister Saphron lives there with her wife. She tells me all the time about the sights and sends back postcards of the trolleys and houses."

"Oh that's wonderful, are you and your family from Mistral too?" Pyrrha asked, growing curious and curiouser. Jaune for his part shook his head, replying "No we're all from Vale. Well from a small village called Ansel out by the mountains near the frontier. Nothing like Argus."

Pyrrha hummed at the response. Smiling at the image in her head. "Must be quite a lovely place. The untouched wilderness and the fresh air would do anyone good."

"Yeah… But I'm starting to like having consistent CCT signals and not having to hunt for food." Jaune said with a hesitant chuckle in his voice. Which was joined in by Pyrrha's own, causing Jaune to smile at the reaction.

The two were left with another bout of silence between them. Seeing the current situation and the fleeting opportunity. Jaune, swallowed down whatever doubts he might have and spoke. "Miss Nikos-."

"Pyrrha will do fine." She said with a smile.

"Well, uh, Pyrrha. If you don't mind me asking, would you care for a dance?" The last word felt like a needle pressing down into his skin. Silence cam between them as Pyrrha stayed silent as if thinking about the offer. Only with a warmer smile, a bit of red rising to her cheeks as she replied. "That would be lovely."

Offering his hand, Pyrrha took it and stepped over with him to the ballroom floor. Joining those who were already present. Turning to one another once they had found a spot, Jaune gritted his teeth. "I know this is a bad time to ask, but- Do you know how to dance music like this?"

Hesitantly, Pyrrha shook her head. "No, I only know contemporary dances." Her response drew Jaune to pause himself for a moment. Thinking on how to rectify this fault. Turning to her and giving a small smile for reassurance. "Well, just follow my lead as best as you can."

"Pick Yourself Up" by Frank Sinatra

Taking the lead, Jaune placed his hand around her back. Minding carefully to be gently to save them the embarrassment. Pyrrha seemed to gather what Jaune was getting at. Mimicking what he did things were getting along swimmingly. A few small steps, a few trips, nothing out of the ordinary for someone new to this kind of dancing. But through trial and error, as the song seemed to say, she got the hang of things. Swaying to the music alongside the other couples. Things were stiff at first, but they warmed up to the music and the moves seemed to come naturally to beat. Cardin for his part had gone to see what Jaune was up to. Sending Alice, the play-by-play report as it unfolded. An ever-proud grin forming on his face as he watched him go. Port and Ozpin standing off to the side, sipped their drinks with a small smile on each of their faces. A woman joining them with a wireless earpiece in her ear and her scroll out. Snapping a photo before looking on, with interest.

As the song ended, the two seemed to feel relieved that it was over. Laughing quietly to each other having enjoyed the dance. They went for another dance or two. For Jaune it was nice to stretch out his legs and practice a skill he rarely used. Though he couldn't say the same for his partner. Glancing to Pyrrha, Jaune noticed a bit of red growing upon her face. A bit of concern grew as he looked out the large windows which surrounded the ballroom. Looking out into the palace gardens. "Miss Nikos, if you'd like, we could step out and get some fresh air?"

She did not speak, but a small nod was good enough. And so the two departed the ballroom and headed out to the gardens, which were open for the gala for those who were also looking to break from the mania and heat happening inside.

Location: Valeian Palace | Gardens

Time: 6:40 PM

"Moonglow" by Les Brown plays muffled in the background.

Soft lights illuminated the pathway around the gardens. Hedges acting as borders between patches of grass. The only other form of light being the glow of the shattered moon above them. Jaune held his hands behind his back as he walked. Taking in the colder air and calming down from the Gala. Glancing beside him, Pyrrha seemed to of calmed down as well. The crunching of the gravel beneath their feet as they walked to a central fountain.

Stopping at the edge of the fountain, Jaune glanced down at the reflection he cast. Taking a moment to take stock of his current situation. Looking back up he saw that Pyrrha had taken a seat on the edge. Pondering for a moment, he piped up. "So , I take it that you're looking to become a Huntress?"

Looking up to Jaune she nodded in reply. "Mhm, I plan to attend Beacon this coming school year. However, my manager wants to do a marketing tour before I enter Beacon."

"Hence why you're here at the Gala. It honestly feels like a drag. I don't think I could put up with a lot of the stuff you deal with. Popularity and all." Jaune said with a chuckle, sitting down at the edge a good foot between him and Pyrrha. To which she giggled and shook her head. "You have no idea."

Smiling at the notion, Jaune smiled and breathed a quiet sigh before turning back to face the palace. Pyrrha out of her own curiosity, prosed a question to him. "Officer Arc-"

"Jaune is fine, Miss Nikos." He added, Jaune wasn't on duty and given the evening? Forgoing his title seemed appropriate.

Pyrrha nodded, correcting herself. "Well Jaune, how did you get involved with the Police Department? You and your friend seem like promising Hunters?"

To save the long exposition for her, Jaune detailed it down to the base facts. He had barely any real combat experience, he never went to Combat School. It would have been impossible for him to be accepted into Beacon. His grades being the only things holding him up at that point. After giving his explanation he propped his chin on his hand. "I knew I always wanted to help people. Being a Huntsman was my dream, but I knew there were other ways to help people. So, I turned to the Academy, and they took me in. And now I help people on a daily basis. Purse snatchers, domestic disputes, parking tickets. All in the name of keeping Vale safe.

Listening to him, she couldn't help but smile at his commitment. Despite his initial lack of proper training, Jaune had taken to the duties of an Officer well. "It sounds like you have had quite the time. Though perhaps in the future I may be working with you. It's not uncommon for Huntsmen and Huntresses to be called to assist local law enforcement."

"Well Miss Nikos, I do find the prospects of having a four time Mistral Tournament Champion backing me up quite nice." Jaune said with a chipper tone in his voice.

Pyrrha smiled and closed her first for a moment. Gripping hard before speaking. "You can call me Pyrrha, Jaune. It only seems fair."

Pausing for a moment he nodded and sheepishly smiled. "I suppose you're right." To Jaune, it did feel good to lose the formalities. In the end, despite her titles, despite his rank. They were simply people, 2 out of the several hundred million which occupied Remnant.

Silence returned soon enough as the conversation died down. Both of their attentions drawn to the Gala which only was ramping up. Not to mention the air seemed a tad bit colder due to the wind chill. So without much need to talk, they both stood up and made their way back towards the ballroom.

The Ballroom was still lively as ever, however it did seem that some of the councilmembers did take their leave. Their absence didn't spoil the mood for the Gala. Officers were downing bottles at the open bar like it was a Holiday, the dance floor occupied by couples and those who lost a bet or two, then there came the few embroiled in deep discussions at tables. It felt warm and welcoming compared to the gardens. Though as they were about to head to join them, a woman approached the two. With scroll in hand, she typed away with her thumb furiously. Pyrrha gave a mixed expression towards her, leaving Jaune puzzled for a moment. Only to realize who it might have been before standing up straight slightly.

"Pyrrha, Honey! Where were you? I was going to introduce you to the Commissioner and see if we can get you to work with the Department for a day. Oh, and who's this handsome friend of yours?" The woman said in rapid fire. Though clear enough to make the two flustered.

Pyrrha recomposing herself nodded and bowed her head. "I do apologize for that Miriam. But I was talking to this… Officer here." With a motion of her hand Jaune felt push as Pyrrha moved him forward to introduce himself. Jaune got the memo and responded and held out a hand. "Officer Arc, Ma'am."

Miriam shook it though it felt weak as her mind was likely on other things than the present moment. "Y'know… Ah never mind. Just enjoy the Gala, Pyrrha. I'll text you when we'll be leaving." With that her manager smiled warmly and departed for another side of the room.

"What was that all about?" Jaune asked Pyrrha who was just as confused as she was. She simply shook her head, giving a sigh in embarrassment from her manager. "She means well; however, she can be quite… I can't find the word to describe it."

Jaune glanced over and rose his hands in reassurance. "Well let's not worry about that for now. Care to dive back into the fray?"

"I suppose another dance would be nice." She said in reply. Taking the lead and letting him follow along towards ballroom floor.

With the Gala coming down to a steady end, following a few speeches, an auction, and some awards. The night ended as guests began to depart from the Palace. A trio emerged as Jaune and Cardin were exchanging stories and sights they saw during the Gala. Pyrrha off to the side of Jaune listening in politely to the two. Coming down the steps from the Palace into the courtyard. Miriam waited for Pyrrha by their SUV limousine. Motioning for Pyrrha to hurry on inside, as she seemed to be in a hurry.

Jaune turned to Pyrrha and chuckled. "Well I think you're manager's calling for you, Pyrrha. I wouldn't want to keep her waiting."

"I guess so, it was a lovely night and it was wonderful to meet you Jaune. I do hope that we'll meet again sometime." She said in earnest.

"I do too, oh and before I forget…" He said as he took out his scroll and opened it up. "I hope it isn't too much of a bother but could I get a photo with you? Something for my family."

"It isn't a bother in the slightest." She said as she gave a wave to her manager then turned to Jaune. Who was trying to hold his scroll to take a selfie. Joining him he took the photo and nodded his head in thanks. Though as he was reaching down to put the scroll back into his pocket, he felt a slight tug as it seemed to almost fly away from his hand. Looking towards the direction it was being pulled towards he saw it was Pyrrha. She sheepishly smiled and motioned for the scroll to be handed to her. He did cautiously, only to see her typing in something before handing it back.

"Good Night, Officer Arc." She said with a bow and a small curtsey before heading towards the limo. Jaune returning it with a prompt "Good Night, Miss Nikos."

The limo doors soon closed, and it departed. Leaving Jaune and Cardin to walk to the gravel parking lot. The look on Cardin's face was one of complete shock and awe. Only broken by a sudden arm around him and a head noogie. "I knew it! I knew you had it in you! Holy shit that was incredible, Pyrrha Nikos? HOW? JUST HOW?"

Jaune was absolutely lost at the outburst. Trying to push Cardin away which he eventually did after laughing his lungs out. "Hey! Hey…" He said as he tried to catch his breath. "What was that all about?"

"You, Jauney Boy, have a gift. You danced with her real nice and took her out to the gardens. What did she say to you? Did you get a date? Her number? C'mon spit it out." Cardin said as he patted Jaune's back. Eager to listen to what might of transpired between the two.

"We just talked Cardin." He said with his arms raised to calm him down. "Look we got off slow with dancing but she warmed up to it and we went outside to cool off. She's a nice person Cardin, but no number, no date. Like I said before, I just want to take it nice and easy. But again she is a really nice person."

Cardin had the most shitfaced grin on his face. Snickering along as he took the lead and walked to the car. "Okay lover boy, just don't come crawling to me for advice. Oh and how does the Griffin sound? I could use some good grub after that ritzy affair."

"Aha! Did someone say the Griffin's Lair?" Cried out port from thin air. Making the two jump and scream in surprise.

"It's going to be a long night." Thought Jaune in that moment.

Late night drinking and singing songs with Professor Port wasn't how Jaune would typically end a night, but all he knew when he work up was that he didn't want to be in on a Sunday. But he had to. Opting to go early and just sleep until briefing. Jaune was in the breakroom sipping some coffee after napping for a few minutes. Only to hear some commotion from outside as a few officers clamored around something. Curious, he headed out of the breakroom with his mug in hand. Walking over.

"Say, what's the matter? Some new regulation change on the bulletin?" He asked as he took a sip of his coffee.

"Oh nothing, Arc. Just you." Said Bell with the paper in hand. Turning it towards Jaune to reveal the magazine section of it with the headline: The Invincible Girl's Weakness: Vale's Finest. There with the headline was an image of him and Pyrrha on the dance floor having a ball. The other officers smiled and chuckled the predicament. "Nice work there, Arc. You've sunk Mistral's greatest weapon."

Jaune swallowed his coffee down hard and grabbed the paper, staring at the headline. "What the fuc-."

Arkos.

It's a tough spot for most RWBY fans and the ever present staple of What Ifs in Fan Fictions. The writers in their infinite wisdom chose Pyrrha to be the sacrificial lamb for trilogy. Bar Penny cause she could be rebuilt. The whole oblivious dense MC trope isn't a favorite of mine because it happens to throw away the MC's hormonal and natural instincts out the window. Now I will not say if this will develop further, however keep an eye out for our favorite Amazonian.

I hope you enjoyed this chapter, as I've said this has been in the works for a while and I am finally glad to get it out there. The following chapters from this will at last be colliding with the main series. Starting off with a Yang! Badum tss.

Anyways stay safe, stay healthy and…

Stay turned for more Guarding Vale: A VPD Story.
