Joke answer: A cant-elope

get it? Like a cantaloupe?

I know, I know, I'm utterly hilarious!

without further ado, the story

Eragon and Saphira were flying to the spot on the map Impa had pointed out, this was where they were most likely going to encounter the mysterious swordsman Impa spoke so highly of.

Psh. Eragon said remembering Impa warning him not to engage Link in combat. Those boloblins weren't tough at all and Beatle said that they were hard to beat.

We should still be wary meeting him, Saphira interjected. From what I saw in your memories, Impa had some power, enough to sense us entering. If she says that he could be dangerous then i think we should heed her advice.

Yeah, you're probably right. Eragon tapped Saphira's side. How about only I meet him first.

That would probably be wise, little one.

Are we close to the spot? Eragon questioned.

I was about to land.

Saphira began her decent before landing in a small clearing in a patch of woods next to a path.

This was where Impa said we were most likely to encounter him. Saphira stated.

How do you think we'll have to wait. Eragon asked.

Could be minutes, could be hours. We won't know until he comes up the path.

In that case I'm going to get a meal cooking.

Soon Eragon had a nice fire going and a squirrel roasting on a spit. It bothered him to take a life for his meal but he was still unfamiliar with these lands and thus didn't know the edible plants.

Eragon had built the fire at the edge of the woods next to the path so he could watch for the man. Thankfully, he was finishing his meal when he spotted someone coming up the path.

He was jogging rather quickly and any human running at that pace would have been quickly exhausted. As he got closer Eragon noticed something. This was the man he had seen in his dream.

As who he assumed was Link approached Eragon saw a flash of blue light and a wicked looking hand scythe appeared on his back, replacing the great sword that was there previously.

When he neared Eragon walked out to meet him.

When he was a few feet away he stopped and from his hand gestures Eragon discerned that he was asking Eragon's name.

Eragon mentally slapped himself in the face remembering Impa telling him that Link had obtained the title silent knight because he had taken a vow of silence.

That's gonna complicate things. Eragon said to Saphira.

"Eragon", he said. "My name is Eragon."

Eragon could see Link visible relax at hearing his name.

What followed was a series of hand gestures that Eragon could barely understand, questions that he tried his best to answer. After their one sided conversation was over Eragon had recounted almost his entire encounter with Impa and the sun was beginning to set. Eragon suggested that they get some sleep and grabbed his bedroll that he had been sitting on.

Thank goodness I didn't leave it with Saphira else he would have been suspicious of me heading back into the woods.

Eragon was just about to lay down when he realized that Link wasn't pulling out a bedroll but rather squatting by the fire.

"Do you need a place to sleep?" Eragon asked.

Link shook his head.

"Okay."

with that Eragon fell asleep with his consciousness closed off to the outside world while his senses remained alert. Waking dreams dancing before his eyes.

The next morning Eragon was nudged awake by Link. When he got up he noticed two things: first, the fire was smoldering as if it had been burning all night, second, Link was on high alert with a bow coated in blue metal with an arrow drawn. He was staring into the woods.

I think I might have been spotted while he was searching for firewood. Saphira said.

Oh no, this was not how I'd hoped it'd go.

"Link, I know this may seem startling to you but you need to trust me."

A look of realization crossed Link's face and he drew his bow and aimed it at Eragon.

Oh no. Said Eragon.

Link's eyes squinted and his fingers stretched on the cord.

It looks like we're going to test that theory about his skill. Commented Saphira. "If this goes south I will interfere."

A twang was all the warning Eragon had. With inhuman speed he dodged to the side and drew his sword, which he had left next to his bedroll, in preparation for a fight. He reminded himself not to seriously harm Link.

Link had drawn his scythe and a shield and dashed at Eragon before swinging his scythe. From the moment their weapons crossed Eragon could tell that he was a fighter of incredible skill.

The curved side of the scythe met Eragon's sword and Brisingr was almost yanked out of his hands. Thanks to the curved shape of the scythe Link could hook it on Eragon's sword.

Eragon retaliated with blows of his own which were met with a shield.

Eragon released a flurry of blows that would have bested any normal human, but it didn't seem to even faze Link.

They fought back and forth for several minutes. At one point Eragon managed to cut Link's leg but it almost cost him his face. At another Link slammed his shield up into Eragon's sword knocking him off balance and managed a nasty cut on his right shoulder, forcing Eragon to use his left arm.

So he's able to identify his enemy's strengths and disable them.

That was all Eragon could think before he was forced to block a blow to the chest.

Enough of this! I can't let this go on, I need to end this.

Eragon swung his sword with all his might in an attempt to split Link's shield in two. Much to his surprise, though, his sword didn't encounter a shield as Link summersaulted backwards to leave Eragon swinging at empty air and, unable to stop his momentum, he became unbalanced. Link took this opportunity to dash forwards and would have cut his head off had it not been for Saphira's interference.

Quick as a snake she dashed forwards from her hiding place at the edge of the woods and grabbed Link in one of her talons.

As she held him there he took the opportunity to fire arrow after arrow at her head. At first he just fired normal arrows, then he switched to arrows tipped in red which caused a burst of flame whenever they hit. Then he fired blue tipped arrows that caused ice to ripple across Saphira's scales when they hit.

Up till now the arrows were just a minor annoyance, then he fired a yellow tipped arrow. It struck and electricity covered Saphira's entire body, causing her to tremble and drop link. She remained frozen in place for several seconds as the electricity covered her then it faded and left her gasping for breath. By now Link was sprinting away at a pace that only an elf, or rider, could match. Eragon gave chase.

Eragon was sprinting as fast as he could but it still took him several minutes to catch up to Link. As he reached Link Eragon realized that he was running for a stable.

Eragon drew his sword and was about to use the hilt to knock Link out when he suddenly turned around and, quick as a whistle, fired a blue arrow at Eragon. They were to close for Eragon to dodge or block so the arrow connected with its target, Eragon's chest.

Surprisingly, it didn't hurt much but Eragon's body was quickly frozen in ice and he was unable to move. This only lasted for a few seconds, but in that time Link was able to reach a strange glowing stone building and place a strange device on his hip on the pedestal sticking up next to a door.

All sound was muffled for Eragon but at that moment the ice cracked and he was released just in time to see Link vanish down an elevator.

Link raced to the shrine and Saphira would have followed but they were near a stable so she had to stay hidden. He stood on the elevator but it refused to go down leaving Eragon stuck at the top with nothing to do but wait.

He walked to the stable but kept an eye on the shrine. When he reached the stable he saw Beetle sitting outside. This peaked Eragon's interest as he had only been able to get there thanks to Saphira.

"How did you get here so fast?" He asked Beetle.

"I walked!" Beetle responded cheerfully.

"Seriously, tell me."

"I could ask you the same question, but I don't think you want to answer it", Beetle countered and Eragon realized that he didn't want to tell Beetle about Saphira so it would be best to leave that conversation behind.

"Do you want to buy something?" Beetle asked.

"Actually I was wondering where that shrine goes", Eragon asked.

"Give me some rupees and I'll tell you everything I know about them."

Eragon handed over the rupees he had gotten from selling the monster parts.

"So? What do you know?" He asked.

"Nothing", Beetle shrugged.

Eragon slapped himself in the face realizing that Beetle had just tricked him. He was about to chew Beetle out when a strange sound came from the shrine and, with a flash of blue light, Link appeared on the pedestal in front of the door to the shrine.

Link walked over to Eragon but Eragon was aware of the same wicked looking sickle on his back and the tense expression on his face. When Link reached him he stopped and stood with an expectant look.

"I'm sorry about what happened, I wasn't trying to hurt you. I was actually sent here by Impa to aid you in your quest." Eragon said and then went on to explain what Impa had told him.

Around halfway through his explanation Link interrupted and beckoned for him to join him at the fire outside the stable. When Eragon sat down and Link crouched he finished his explanation.

When he was done Link pointed to a tower in the distance and with some hand gestures, and no small amount of concentration on Eragon's part, he was able to explain that that was his destination. From there he planned to go further north to reach a village where a beast is, Eragon assumed it was a divine beast.

When they finished their one sided conversation Link stood up and, with another blue flash, five apples appeared in his arms. He then dumped them on the metal bowl in the fire and waited a minute as the fruit cooked.

Eragon realized that the apples came from a tablet on Link's hip and he guessed that was where the sickle came from on their first encounter.

Smelling the cooking apples made Eragon's stomach rumble, he realized that he hadn't eaten all day. Link noticed this and when the apples were finished he placed them on a dish and handed them to Eragon, who thanked him before eagerly digging in without any utensils.

The food was different from what Eragon was used to, it didn't just seem to fill him up but also heal him. The wound delt to him earlier during their conflict disappeared.

Link then proceeded to cook many other things a well, a couple dishes included several plants that Eragon had seen earlier and he made a mental note of this so he could find them later.

When all was said and done every dish disappeared in a flash of blue light, back into the slate. From this Eragon inferred that the slate acted as storage and not an unlimited source of food or weapons.

Link crouched down before seeming to realize something. From his gestures Eragon guessed that he was asking if Eragon had any money to witch he responded "No."

Nodding to himself he rose and beckoned for Eragon to follow before leading him into the stable and renting a bed for him. Eragon was thankful and again thanked Link as he noticed the sun was setting. Exhaustion took over and Eragon crawled into bed, but not before Link said to have him woken up in the morning.

So the two finally meet. I'm sorry this took a while to post but you have no idea how difficult it was to write this, I'm so glad I didn't do this from Link's point of view. He is so hard to write.

I don't mean to be like other authors but if you like the story or if you have suggestions or constructive criticism then Please leave a review. It would mean so much to me.

Thanks!
