A/N: Short flash fiction thingy. I just wanted to work on something to pass the time and then suddenly my nose started bleeding, so I don't know if I should take that as a bad sign…

OOOOOOOOOOOO

David walked into Calli's living room and nudged her new ESA out of the way. Midnight rolled his eyes and stalked out of sight, black fluffy tail twitching. David thought about the different ways that he could skin a cat and then thought better of it. Calli loved that cat even after just having him for about a week now.

Speaking of Calli…

"Calli," David called softly, hearing her soft breathing in the kitchen where the scent of chocolate floated in the air.

Calli appeared in the entrance to the kitchen, munching on a chocolate bar. "Hi." She smiled and brushed back a strand of stubborn hair, the moons in phases on her fingers still looking fresh. "What brings you here so early?"

"I need to borrow some of your razors," David said, rubbing his chin.

Confusion hit Calli's eyes. "Why?"

"Because the scruff's got to go, sweetheart and I don't want to bother with the stores tonight."

Thunk!

The chocolate bar hit the ground and Calli was on him faster than he thought was possible. Her hand was pressed against his throat and he was on his back with her thighs wrapped around his arms, pinning him in place. A strange hardness was in her eyes.

"Calli?"

"No." Calli said, firmly. "You are not shaving off the scruff. Just…no."

David raised his eyebrow. "You do know that you're not the boss of me and I can do whatever the hell I want with my body, right?"

"And you do realize I can deny you the sex for the rest of time too?" Calli shot back, staring him hard in the eye, something that she rarely could do.

"You wouldn't."

"I would. And I would break up with you."

David's heart fluttered as if trying to beat after so many decades of being dead. "Calli, you would break up with us."

Calli shook her head. "I wouldn't break up the with the Boys. I would break up with you, David. Just you."

David's eyes narrowed. "Over a little fuzz on my face."

The witch nodded.

"You're being a stupid bitch."

Slap!

Even the Boys winced at that one.

Calli glared down at him, her hand ready for the backswing. "Don't call me that. Don't you ever call me that again. Understand?" Her body was practically shaking. "I have been called that way too many times by people that didn't deserve my love and you should never be in that category, David."

She moved away from him and walked back into the kitchen, arms wrapped around herself, like she was trying to keep herself from falling apart. David flipped easily to his feet and followed her. Midnight was already on the counter, doing his ESA duties and rubbing against Calli, trying to keep her from falling to pieces by offering her comfort. Something Calli was half ignoring.

"What's the big deal about me shaving my face, Calli?" David demanded, crossing his arms.

"It's like when my dad shaved his face when I was a little girl…" Calli muttered, picking up Midnight and holding him against her chest. "I was so scared about the strange man that sounded like my dad but didn't look like my dad…not really like my dad anyway…Mom and him tried to explain that dad had simply just shaved his beard off because it was summer and it was hot, but I freaked out and wouldn't go near him…

"I have object permanence issues, David. I don't do changes very well. If someone moves something or changes something like my dad did with his beard or my former employers did with the stores…and such…I end up in a state of confusion and panic. It comes with my autism. I can't help it. I wish that I could but I can't." She looked at him with sad tri-colored eyes. "You wouldn't look like David to me without your scruff like Dwayne probably would look different with a different hairstyle and so on and so forth. I can't do it."

Calli buried her face against Midnight's soft fur. "Sometimes, part of me freaks out when it sees myself in the mirror. I don't recognize me. I look wrong. But I don't know exactly what I'm supposed to be seeing. Red or black hair. Pale or red skin. I don't know anymore."

David moved over to her and wrapped his arms around her. Midnight glared at him like he thought his job was being challenged and David glared right back. His ice blue eyes slid up onto Calli's face when she let out a little uncertain giggle.

"You should have told me – all of us – that this was going on, sweetheart. This is something that we need to be aware of and keep in the mix when we work on turning you into one of us. Because changes do happen. Over time and it happens a lot with the human population. You'll have to adapt and grow and it isn't always pretty."

Calli nodded and leaned her head against his shoulder. "I'm sorry, David."

David pressed a kiss to her temple. "How'd you move so fast by the way?"

"A girl never reveals all her secrets, hon."

And that's what scares me, sweetheart…

OOOOOOOOOOO
