Chapter 4: The first assignment part 1

Ash and his students have arrived at the South Province where they will begin their field trip across Paldea. Ash hoped that this would help develop his students' battling prowess and help decide for them what they will do with their desires.

"Ok students, I'm ready to give you the first assignment" Ash stated out of nowhere. "Already?!" Exclaimed Zeke. "Don't worry, this is any easy one" Ash assured, though this did little to assure them.

"Your first assignment, is to catch a Pokemon" Ash declared, and all of his pupils all gained perplexed looks on their faces. "That's it?" Vanny questioned. "We already know how to catch a Pokemon, we just throw a pokeball at a wild Pokemon and boom, we catch it" Gus said.

"But have you ever did that before?" Ash questioned, and that seemed to stump everyone. "That's what I thought, let me show you." Ash then took his students over to a clearing, and there, they saw a small red crocodile with a peach face and underbelly, along with yellow patches.

"Can anyone identify that Pokemon for me?" Ash questioned. Thomas then answered "I think that's supposed to be a Fuecoco, the fire starter of the region" "Thanks, now, let me show you something" Ash replied. He then pulled out an empty pokeball and threw it at Fuecoco, however, the fire croc saw it coming and blew an Ember attack at it, sending it back into Ash's hands.

"You see, you may need to weaken the Pokemon before you can catch, now for a live demonstration, Pikachu, I choose you!" Pikachu hopped off his trainer's shoulder and engaged in battle with Fuecoco. The fire starter was startled and shot a haphazard Ember attack at the electric mouse, whom easily dodged out of the way and blasted a Thunderbolt attack at the fire croc, knocking it out. Ash then primed the empty pokeball again and shouted "Pokeball go!" as he threw the ball where it then connected and sucked in the fire type. The ball then wobbled left to right as Fuecoco was struggling to get out of the ball, only for it to then ding, signifying capture.

The students were all amazed at how calm and controlled Ash was handling the catch. "And that is how a pro catches a Pokemon, now I want all of you to go out and try to catch a Pokemon." With that said, the students all spread out and went to find their second Pokemon to add to their teams.

Thomas was walking up a hill with his Clodsire, hoping to find any new poison types to add to his team. He had a love for poison types since he got his Clodsire as a Wooper back when he was younger, and he hoped to be a poison type specialist. Eventually, he would find a small mouse like Pokemon with a large nose and buck teeth.

"Wow, a Shroodle" Thomas said amazed as he saw it gnawing on a berry. Remembering what Ash did to catch Fuecoco, he sent Clodsire out to weaken Shroodle with a Poison Tail attack. This angered the Shroodle as it fought back with a Poison Fang attack, but it didn't do much, and Clodsire retaliated with a Slam attack. Thomas took this chance to throw an empty pokeball at the downed Shroodle, where it proved to be a successful capture. "Alright, I caught my first wild Pokemon!" Thomas exclaimed as he jumped for joy. Over with Carla and Vanny, they were trying to find the Pokemon that would best suit them, but they weren't having much luck so far.

"What do you hope on catching?" Carla asked her classmate "Who knows, hopefully it's something very strong, like my Orthworm" Vanny answered as she held an empty pokeball in her hand. "Well, I'll be going over to the coast, maybe something over there" With that said, Carla went over to the beach where she and Dondozo tried to find any possible water types for them to catch. Eventually, they found a streamlined and sharp looking fish Pokemon with magenta and gray scales.

"Wow, a Veluza! Get ready Dondozo, we are getting our second teammate" Carla declared as she got ready for battle. As the battle commenced, Veluza began to rapidly spin as it began shed some of its scales. "What kind of move was that?: Carla questioned as she pulled out her rotom phone, which told her that the move was Fillet Away, a high risk high reward move that inflicts damage on the user in exchange for increased power.

"We better take this thing out quick before it knocks us out, use Body Slam" Carla ordered as Dondozo lifted its large body to slam onto Veluza, but it proceeded to boost out of the way and chomp down on the large catfish with a Bite attack, which did a large amount of damage thanks to the power boost it gained.

"Gah! Quick use Aqua Tail!"

Dondozo managed to shake Veluza off of him my swatting him away with his tail, but the jettison Pokemon immediately rammed into Dondozo with an Aqua Jet attack.

"Oh no, if I don't think of something quick I'll fail the assignment, wait a minute, quick use Body Slam to splash the water!"

Dondozo did so and it ended up making Veluza rather dizzy and it began to get flung around by the waves Dondozo was making. Carla took this chance to catch Veluza by using the Dive Ball that her parents gave her as a birthday gift. After a few shakes, the Pokemon was caught, and Carla celebrated it by jumping up and down. That was when she remembered her classmates and remarked "I wonder if the others are doing good".

Meanwhile, back with Ash, he is just checking up on his latest catch, and he was impressed by Fuecoco's moveset. Not only did he have Ember, but it also had Round and Snarl. Ash thought it odd that a fire starter like Fuecoco would have such moves, but he isn't complaining.

"Hey Ash!" Ash looked up to see Thomas and Carla running up to him. "Oh hey there, I see you have caught your own Pokemon?" Ash questioned, and he got the reply of "I sure did" from both students. They both released their Shroodle and Veluza to show to their teacher, and he was impressed. "Very nice, now we just need to wait for the others to come back with their Pokemon" Ash said as he went to train his new Fuecoco on improving his stamina.

Over at the nearby forest, Zeke was walking around to find any possible new fairy types for him to catch, as he wanted to be a fairy type specialist. He was tired of the stereotype of fairy types being only for girls, and he wanted to break that trend. "Hmm, what fairy type would be a good fit for me?" Zeke wondered as he looked around, until he spotted an Azurill. "Perfect" Rather than trying to weaken it, he instead threw the pokeball at Azurill, knowing that attempting to battle it would result in the baby Pokemon running away into the woods. Thankfully, this proved to be the right choice, as Azurill was caught without the need for a battle.

"Sweet, I can't wait to show this to Ash" Zeke exclaimed as he ran back to the picnic area that Ash had set up. So far, 3 of the students have completed the assignments, but can the others succeed?
