The Best Day That Happened In My Life
Mettaton smiled as he looked at the calendar, a special day circled on it. "I can't believe it's been one year since I adopted my little one," he said to himself.
"Hey, Mettaton," Napstablook said as he came in.
"Oh, hey, Blooky," the robot said.
The ghost smiled gently. "The big day is coming up, huh?" He asked.
"Yes," Mettaton said. "Seems like only yesterday our Luna became part of the family."
"Time does go by fast," Napstablook said. "I cleared your schedule for the holidays and for that day, since I know how much it means to you and Luna."
"Thank you, darling," the robot said gratefully. "I've been looking up ideas as to what to do on that day and I've found one site that suggested a blanket fort."
"I've heard from Frisk that those are a lot of fun," the ghost said. "I think Luna would love that."
Mettaton smiled, the encouragement helping. "I've also ordered her favorite movies and got that karaoke machine came in," he said. "I also asked Papyrus to make his special spaghetti and I secretly asked Sans to oversee that."
Napstablook smiled. "Papyrus has gotten better with making spaghetti," he said.
"Yes, and I asked Grillby if he could do pizza for us and he agreed. He actually included that on his menu and it seems it was the right choice as his business has been doing quite well."
The ghost smiled. "Luna is going to love everything you both do that day and not because of the gifts," he said.
"What do you mean, Blooky?" Mettaton asked with a smile.
"She's going to enjoy it because she's spending time with her favorite person in the world: her dad."
The robot smiled again as he knew the ghost's words were true. "Thank you, Blooky," he said before seeing everything was all set. "But are you sure you can handle things for a few days? It won't be too much?"
"No, I can handle it," Napstablook said. "And Alphys and Gaster will be here too."
"Alright. I just feel bad leaving you to do all this work on top of your own work," Mettaton said worriedly.
"Don't," the ghost said gently. "I can handle things and I insist you enjoy the time off, Metta. After all, the anniversary of you adopting our Luna is too important to miss."
The robot smiled. "You're right," he said, giving the ghost a hug. "But should you need anything, Blooky, please don't hesitate to call."
"Alright."
Feeling better things would be fine while he took time off, Mettaton went to go pick up his daughter from school. He usually was working and was very rarely able to pick her up all the time, which was where Gaster, Undyne, or Alphys would go pick Luna up from school, but this time, Mettaton wanted to do that and surprise his daughter.
He arrived and had just stepped out of his limo when the bell ran and he waited with the other parents for the children. A few parents looked at him curiously, but he smiled at them before turning back, soon spotting his daughter in the crowd. "Luna!" He called out to her. "Over here, sweetie!"
Luna's wolf ears flicked at hearing her father call her name and she turned in surprise to see her father standing with some of the other parents, waving to her. "Dad!" She said happily, running up to him with arms outstretched.
Smiling, Mettaton caught his daughter in a hug and spun her around. "Oh, pumpkin, I'm so glad to see you," he said. "How was your day?"
"It was wonderful, Dad," she said, hugging him tightly.
"Hey, look! It's Mettaton!" A kid said and everyone turned to look.
Mettaton decided to wave to them all. "Hello. Just came to pick up my daughter from school," he said, smiling.
A teacher came out and smiled. "Oh, Mr. Mettaton," she said, going up to him. "I'm so glad you're here."
He turned to her. "Is everything alright, Miss?" He asked.
"Oh, yes. Just wanted to remind you about the PTA meeting after Thanksgiving," she said.
"I'll be there," he promised. "My schedule is cleared for that."
"Oh, good. I know your schedule can get busy at times. Also, we do have a field trip coming up in January. Would you be willing to be one of the chaperones for it?"
"Please send me the information on it and what day it is on and I can check my schedule," he asked politely.
"Of course. Take care and Happy Thanksgiving."
He nodded. "Same to you," he said as the other parents came and picked up their kids. Luna heard some of the kids whispering in awe that she had a cool dad and that she was lucky to have a dad like that. She smiled as she agreed that she was super lucky, but not because her dad was famous.
She was lucky because she had a dad who loved her and spent time with her, making sure she had all that she needed and then some. And most importantly, he backed up his words with actions and kept any promise he made. To her, he was the best dad she could ever ask for.
She suddenly felt her dad scoop her up into his arms. "Come on, pumpkin," he said, acting as if he was a grand duke. "Our chariot awaits."
Luna giggled, knowing her dad was being silly. "Dad," she said, hiding her face in his shoulder and he chuckled before they got in the limo and they were soon home.
The next day, Luna was snuggled in her bed, dozing as she knew she didn't have school with the holiday coming up. As she was dozing, she heard a knock on her door and the door opened a little. "Luna? Are you awake, pumpkin?" She heard her father ask.
"Dad?" She asked in surprise, her voice a bit groggy before she got up. "Hold on a moment."
She slipped a hoodie on over her pajamas and smoothed her hair down. "Okay, you can come in," she said.
Mettaton entered and he smiled. "Sorry if I woke you, sweetie," he said.
"No, I was just dozing," she said. "But...I thought you had work today."
He chuckled. "Nope, not today," he said. "Because it's a special day."
She looked at him curiously. "It is?" She asked.
He nodded before cocking an eyebrow at her. "Don't tell me you forgot what today is?" He said, his voice playful.
She looked at the calendar, but didn't see anything marked specifically. "Um, Dad? What is today?" She asked, confused.
He chuckled. "Pumpkin, when was your adoption date?" He hinted.
As she remembered the date, her eyes widened and her ears perked up as she realized what he was hinting at. She looked at the calendar again and was surprised. "Whoa, has it been one year already?" She asked.
"That is has been," he said, hugging her. "One year since I adopted you, which is why today, I'm going to spend time with you. We've got your favorite movies, a karaoke machine, and even some yummy food from Grillby's and Papyrus' special spaghetti."
Luna grinned. Though she hadn't yet met Grillby or Papyrus, she had heard good things about them. "Your aunt Muffet even made your favorite donuts for breakfast," Mettaton continued. "They just arrived."
The young teen was now wide awake. "I can't believe I nearly forgot what today was, Dad," she said.
He playfully booped her nose before tickling the base of her wolf ears, making her laugh. "Why don't you get dressed and we can start the day?" He suggested.
She agreed and throughout the whole day, Luna and Mettaton sang a few songs together before doing a couple solos and ate the delicious food (Mettaton made a mental note to personally thank Muffet, Grillby, and Papyrus for making the food) before sitting down and watching the movies.
Luna was excited when she saw her father had picked out her favorites and a few new ones and they snuggled on the couch together as they watched the movies.
In the middle of the third movie, Luna grew thoughtful and looked up at her dad. "Hey, Dad, can I ask you something?" She asked.
"Of course, pumpkin," he said, turning to her and pausing the movie.
"Well...why did you choose me to adopt me that day?" She asked.
The question caught him a bit off guard, but he smiled. "Well...when I first arrived at the orphanage, I didn't have a specific child in mind," he said. "I just knew I wanted to adopt a child, but decided to visit the children before making my decision."
He smiled again. "When I arrived and spotted you, I grew curious as to why you were sitting by yourself and not playing with the other children, but then I heard that lovely song you sang. When I heard it, I realized how much you wanted a family, how alone you felt. It was something I could relate to."
"What do you mean?" Luna asked curiously.
"Well, before we monsters came to the Surface, I was actually quite lonely. Though Alphys was there, I didn't really have any friends. I only knew about my fans through the internet, but had never really met any of them in person." He paused. "And then word of a human in the Underground reached me and I was curious, especially when I heard the human was actually being nice to monsters, despite the fact that we had been warned by our king not to trust humans."
"Was it because of the war?" The teen asked. "Because of the horrible tragedy that happened over two-hundred years ago?"
She had read about it from Alphys' files and Gaster and Undyne had both told her about the war. She felt sad for the monsters who had done nothing wrong but try to defend their home and themselves.
Mettaton nodded. "Yes," he said softly. "And then Frisk reached Hotland and the lab. When she offered me friendship, I was surprised, but then I saw that she truly meant it. As she showed me the joy of having friends and later on becoming my niece, I began to realize just how fulfilling my life had become thanks to her and as I saw more children with their parents, I started to realize how much I wanted to be a father."
He smiled then. "When I met you and heard your song, it felt like I was meant to be your father. To be honest, I was a little worried you wouldn't want me to adopt you after the director told me how others were cruel to you because of your ears, but when you accepted my offer to be your father, I swore that I would be the best father I could be to you."
"And you are," she said, hugging him.
He hugged her back. "Luna, that song you sang," he said. "Can you tell me about it? How you came up with it?"
She smiled. "I found the music box one day while exploring and I picked it up. When I heard the music, I decided to come up with lyrics for it. Seeing kids either get adopted or walking by with their families were my inspiration to write the song, though the song was really about me. I just wanted a family, one that would accept me."
Her ears went flat and her tail wrapped around her ankles, which told Mettaton she was nervous. "But no one did?" He asked gently.
"No," she said. "They would stare at my ears and then say I looked weird. After the first few times, I began avoiding adopting families. Whenever they would come, I'd stay away from the other children."
She then sighed. "I never thought I'd get adopted, but then you arrived and you approached me. I knew you were famous, so I was surprised. And then when you spoke to me, I was even more surprised."
He smiled now. "I was drawn to that song you sang," he said. "I felt I had to learn more about the girl who sang it."
Luna smiled. "The song was of my fondest wish," she said. "I wanted a family so much, but was afraid because of my previous experiences."
Mettaton grew curious. "What made you realize I wasn't like the others?" He asked.
"When you said you didn't care that I was a teenager and you felt I deserved a home just like anyone else. And you didn't laugh at my wolf ears," she said. "Also, when you called me 'pumpkin', I knew you were absolutely genuine."
He hugged her before grinned mischievously. "Remember when I discovered you were ticklish?" He asked.
Luna gasped and tried to escape, but Mettaton was quicker and began tickling her sides, making her laugh. "AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" She laughed.
"Cootchie, cootchie, coo, my sweet pumpkin," he cooed playfully, tickling her stomach, which made her shriek with laughter before he pulled her into another hug and began tickling the base of her wolf ears.
Luna let out another squeal. "AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! NOHOHOHOHOHOT THEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHERE!" She begged.
"Oh, but I must tickle these adorable wolf ears," Mettaton said before blowing raspberries into his daughter's neck, making her squeal again. After a bit, he let her up and she giggled before jumping up and running, but her father was right behind her. "I'm going to get you, little one."
She hid behind a door and when Mettaton was about to pass by, she jumped at him, her hands reaching for his sides and tickling him. "AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" The robot laughed before catching his daughter before she escaped. "Oh, that was sneaky," he said as he tickled her stomach, making her squeal again.
"AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! DAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAD!" She laughed out.
Smiling, he let her up and she hugged him, still giggling a bit. "You're so funny, Dad," she said.
He chuckled, kissing her forehead in affection. "Pumpkin, why don't we build a blanket fort?" He said.
"What's a blanket fort?" She asked.
"Come into the living room and I'll show you."
Luna was curious when her father got blankets and moved the furniture around, guiding her on how to drape the blankets over the furniture to create a fort. In no time at all, they had a wonderful, huge fort in the living room and filled it with pillows and some more blankets. Mettaton smiled before gesturing to Luna to go inside.
She crawled in and looked around. "Wow," she said. "This is awesome."
"I thought you'd like it," he said as he entered as well. "Perhaps one more movie before bed?"
She nodded and they were soon watching a movie while Luna snuggled closer to her father, who hugged her and kissed her forehead. After the movie finished, Luna could barely stay awake and she leaned her head down, falling asleep. Mettaton smiled as he saw this and turned off the movie and the television before turning off the lights and falling asleep beside his daughter.
Blooky came by the check on them later and smiled at seeing the huge fort and the father and daughter sleeping inside. He left without disturbing them, happy for the two of them.
