Truly Thankful

Undyne hefted a couple of turkeys into the kitchen, placing them on the counter and checking to see if they were thawed out. To her delight, they were ready to be prepared for the oven. "Okay, so I think Toriel said three turkeys. Or was it four?" She asked herself. "There is going to be a lot of people at dinner."

"Best prepare four then," came Asgore's voice and she jumped a little, turning to him.

"Oh, hey, Asgore," she said. "Four turkeys?"

"Yes," he said. "Since we have so many family members. Frisk is very excited to have Thanksgiving dinner and she's been telling everyone about it."

"Good thing so we know what to do," the fish warrior said as she began prepare them with seasonings and cleaning out the turkeys. She paused and chuckled. "This reminds me of the time you showed me how to properly clean armor and make sure it never rusted."

Asgore smiled. "Ah, I remember that," he said as his mind wandered back to the past, recalling when he first met the fish woman, back when she had been just a child.

Many years ago...

Asgore took a deep breath as he entered the garden, a smile on his face. His newborn son and his wife were resting inside and he decided to go on a walk and pick some flowers for his wife. He was about to select some flowers when he heard crying. Curious, he followed the sound and noticed a young fish monster who was sitting down and crying a bit, a broken toy spear on the ground beside her.

The king kneeled down. "Young one, are you alright?" He asked gently.

The child gasped and looked up at him, standing up fast when she realized who was beside her. "King Asgore," she said, bowing respectfully to him.

He motioned her to stand up. "No need for formalities, little one," he said. "Is everything alright? I heard you crying."

The child looked a bit embarrassed and turned away. "A Royal Guard doesn't cry," she said, her small voice firm.

Asgore chuckled. "Oh? Are you one of my Royal Guard?" He asked, playing along.

"Well...," the child paused before looking a bit sheepish. "Not yet, but I will someday. I'm going to be a mighty warrior guardiing the Royal Family!"

She said this last part with conviction as she stood tall before her expression fell and she looked at the toy beside her. "Well...if the meanies won't keep breaking my weapons," she admitted. "They say I'll never be a guard. That I can't be one because I'm a girl and a fish monster. But why can't I be? I'm brave enough! Nothing scares me!"

Asgore found this amusing and chuckled. "Oh? Nothing scares this brave warrior?" He asked.

"Nope!" The child said, standing tall.

The king got a sneaky idea and gasped in shock as he looked over the child's shoulder. "Oh, no! Look out!" He said, pointing behind her. "An enemy approaches!"

The child grabbed the broken toy, standing tall. "Don't worry, my king! I'll protect you!" She said as she looked around before seeing the bush nearby and letting out a war cry before running headlong into the bush. "Take that, you stinky enemy!"

Asgore burst out laughing. "Go get him, my brave warrior!" He encouraged her.

The child hit the bush until she was tired, but she held up her toy spear in victory. "I have vanquished the enemy!" She said triumphantly.

The king clapped. "Well done, my brave guard," he said. "What is your name so I may properly reward you?"

"Undyne, Your Majesty," she replied. "And no reward necessary, my King. I am honored to protect you and serve you."

Asgore smiled. "Well, you have passed the test, young one," he said.

She looked confused. "Test, Your Highness?" She asked.

"Those that wish to be guards must pass a test and you have passed it with flying colors," he said. "But you are a bit young to be one of my guards at the time."

Undyne looked a bit deflated. "But," Asgore continued. "If you continue to train well and when you become an adult, I will consider you for my Royal Guard. In fact, your name will be on my list of people I will choose to join my Royal Guard. Perhaps as a Captain?"

The child perked up at that. "Yes, sir, my King," she said. "I promise I will train hard and I will be the best Captain of the Royal Guard."

He smiled. "I have no doubt you will," he said.

Sometime later...

Undyne punched the training dummies as hard as she could. She had made it to be Captain of the Royal Guard, but that wasn't on her mind right now.

What was on her mind right now was Asriel and how he had died at the hands of humans.

She growled as she kicked the dummy down. She hadn't been Captain yet to save Asriel and she swore she wouldn't let anyone else die, be it the King or any member of the Underground.

"Undyne?"

She turned to see Asgore behind her and she bowed to him. "My King," she said.

He motioned her to rise. "Are you alright?" He asked.

She tried to keep her face straight, but she then bowed her head. "I...I don't want anyone else to suffer, Asgore," she said. "I...I...,"

Her voice broke and he pulled her into a hug, letting her cry. "Undyne, Asriel's death isn't your fault," he said gently. "I should have stopped him, though he wanted to fulfill Chara's last wish."

"Humans are awful," the fish woman said, tears running down her face. "Ex-Except for Chara."

Asgore didn't reply. "Undyne, I charge you to protect the Underground. Can I count on you?" He asked.

"Yes, Your Majesty," she said, pulling away from the hug and standing tall, placing her right fist over her chest in a salute and promise. "You have my word. I will not fail you."

He nodded. "You are a strong warrior, Undyne. Never forget that," he said.

Sometime after Frisk fell and the 'fight' with Undyne...

Undyne stood before the king, feeling like she had failed, but also, Frisk's determination to not fight anyone made her wonder if perhaps there were still some humans like Chara.

Asgore looked at his Captain of the Royal Guard. "A child managed to get past the Royal Guard Dogs and even befriended many of the monsters?" He asked.

"Yes, sir," Undyne said. "She...She even convinced me that she didn't want to fight. Ran away when I tried to attack her. She wouldn't even land an attack on me."

The king looked surprised before saddened. "Like Chara?" He asked softly.

She nodded. "Yeah, just like Chara," she said. "Asgore, do you think...maybe we were wrong about all humans?"

He stood up. "I will have to see the child for myself, but until then...make sure no one hurts that child," he said.

"My King?" She asked.

"If she refused to fight you, perhaps she will not fight anyone else," he said.

Undyne looked worried, but nodded. "Yes, sir," she said, her one good eye looking at him before she headed out.

Three years ago...

Frisk had done it. Breaking the barrier and Undyne was stunned. She had at first wanted to stay behind because she didn't feel like she deserved to join the others on the Surface. She was standing at her post when Asgore found her.

"Undyne, why are you here?" He asked.

"Sir, I must defend the castle," she said.

He looked at her. "Undyne," he said, his voice taking a fatherly tone.

Hearing that, she bit her lip and tears filled her good eye. "Asgore...I...I...," she tried to speak before falling to her knees.

The king was reminded of when he first met Undyne so long ago and he kneeled down, pulling her into a hug. "Talk to me, Undyne," he said gently.

"I...I don't deserve to join you all," she said. "I...I hurt Frisk. When...When Flowey was controlling me. I...I saw it."

He held her and rubbed her back, gently rocking her. "Undyne, that wasn't you," he said. "Flowey was controlling you. You wouldn't attack Frisk on your own, would you?"

"N-No," the fish woman said. "I'd never hurt her."

"And Frisk proved that when she managed to break you free of his hold," Asgore said gently. "Come, Undyne. You've fought long and hard to have us be free. The other souls are free and we are all free. It's time to start fresh. In a new place."

He helped her stand up. "And I wouldn't be a good king to leave my loyal Captain of the Royal Guard behind," he said.

She looked up at him and he smiled. "Come, my faithful Captain," he said. "The Surface is waiting."

As they walked to where the barrier had been, they saw Frisk waving to them and gesturing them to come out. Undyne took a deep breath and then squeezed Asgore's arm gratefully. "Asgore...thank you," she said. "Not just for being my King, but also being like a father to me."

He smiled. "You're welcome, Undyne," he said.

Present time...

"Hey, Asgore. You okay?"

The male goat monster blinked and shook his head. "Hmm?" He asked. "I'm sorry, Undyne. Did you say something?"

"Yeah. I asked if you had the stuff for the pies, but you looked like you were far away," she said.

"Oh, I was just revisiting the past," he said. "Back when I first met you and watched you become the warrior you are today."

She smiled. "You mean the times you were like a dad to me?" She asked. "You still are like a dad to me. You were someone I could talk to when I couldn't talk to Gerson."

Asgore smiled. "How is he, anyway?" He asked.

"He'll be over here soon," the fish woman said before looking at the goat monster. "You know, Asgore. I owe a lot to you. If it hadn't been for you, I wouldn't have grown up to train hard and become Captain of the Royal Guard. It's thanks to you encouraging me that my dreams came true."

He smiled. "I may have encouraged you, but you put in the time and effort, Undyne," he said.

She smiled. "I'm truly thankful to have you in my life, Asgore," she said. "As both a friend and father figure."

"And I'm truly thankful to have you in my life as well, Undyne, as both a friend and like a daughter," he said.

Giggles reached them. "Speaking of daughters," he said.

The fish woman grinned. "Let's go see what Frisk, Chara, and Asriel are doing," she said. "Still can't believe Frisk found a way to free them too, but I'm glad. We all feel whole again."

"I agree," Asgore said with a nod.

Little did they know, Toriel had heard everything and she smiled too before heading to the table to make sure it was set for dinner. "We all have much to be truly thankful for," she said to herself.

They all did and they would never forget the blessings they now had.
