Kara soon arrived home with her basket, quickly making her way to the kitchen.
As she got inside, she could hear music playing from the ballroom where the lords and the rest of the royal family were gathered. No one was in the kitchen. Not a servant in sight; the perfect time for Kara to prepare the spell that would change her stepmother.
Kara got out the cake Morpha sold her and put it on a plate, to which she added some fresh strawberries and a flower for garnish. She even prepared a nice little pot of peppermint tea to go with it. Now all she had to do was give it to Shmi.
And that was when Diamond came in.
"Kara, what's that?" Diamond asked, sniffing the cake.
Kara quickly moved the tray away.
"No, Diamond! This cake isn't for you. It's for-"
"Kara!" said a familiar voice.
"Oh, Mother."
"Oh, I've been worried sick." said Shmi.
"You... You were?" said Kara, sounding surprised as Shmi looked her over.
"I didn't know where you'd gone or when you'd come back. I didn't know what to think. Oh, look at your clothes."
"Oh, I just fell down a hill. But I'm not hurt."
"Well, you're home now, so that's the end of it."
"Honestly?"
"I've pacified the lords for now. Your father and Carmine are entertaining them, and hopefully Anakin will be back soon as well when he hasn't found you out there. Of course, we both know a decision still had to be made."
Kara looked unamused, and she picked up the plate with the little cake and held it to her stepmother.
"What's this?" Shmi asked.
"It's a peace offering," said the princess. "I made it for you. Special."
"You made this for me?"
Shmi felt touched and took a little taste of the cake. It had a rather interesting flavor, according to Shmi. But, it didn't seem to do anything.
"How do you feel? Different?" Kara said.
Diamond was confused. But judging by the way Shmi seemed to start disliking the flavor of the cake, she sniffed it again and decided she want to taste it.
"Uh... have you changed your mind at all about the marriage and all that?" Kara asked as Shmi poured herself some tea to rinse that taste from her mouth.
"Now, why don't we go upstairs to the lords and put this whole kerfuffle to rest?"
Shmi then escorted Kara to the stairs.
Diamond sniffed the cake again.
"Don't even think about it, Diamond." Kara warned.
Kara was baffled. Why hadn't the spell worked? Shouldn't Shmi have changed by now?
Kara was beginning to wonder if that gypsy had tricked her with a simply bad-tasting cake. But just as she and Shmi were about to enter the ballroom, Shmi suddenly felt like she was about to collapse.
"Mother? Are you okay?" Kara asked.
"I'm woozy suddenly." said Shmi. "My head is spinning like a top."
"Mom!" Kara caught her stepmother before she could fall.
"Oh, suddenly I'm not so well."
Kara started to wonder if this meant the cake was starting to work.
"Uh... How... How do you feel about the marriage now?" she asked.
"Kara! Oh, just take me to my room." Shmi groaned.
Either a side effect of the spell was making Shmi cranky, or something in it simply didn't agree with her and was giving her a simple case of food poisoning.
So, Kara just began walking Shmi up the stairs to take her to her room.
But when the lords spotted the two ladies, they got up to question her.
"My lady queen," said Jango. "We've been waiting patiently."
"Milords," said Shmi. "I'm out of sorts at the moment. But you will have your answer *burp* soon."
Boba and Omega laughed, being little kids, when the queen burped. So did Wrecker, being the big child he was.
"As you can see, my mother is not feeling well at the moment." said Kara.
"Shmi? What's happened?" Qui-Gon asked, worried about his queen.
"I'm fine, Qui, Dear. I'm fine." Shmi said.
"She just ate something that didn't agree with her, Daddy. That's all." Kara said. "Come, Mother. Let's get you to bed. Just go about with your fun. Someone, go find Anakin."
"You heard the lady," said Hunter.
So, while the guys were going about their fun, Kara tucked Shmi into bed to rest.
"Just take all the time you need to getting yourself right, Mom." Kara said.
Artoo came up onto the bed and rested his head on Shmi's chest as though trying to comfort her.
"What was in that cake?" Shmi asked.
"Why don't you just focus on getting better?" Kara said. "I'll have someone bring you some ginger tea to help your stomach."
Shmi groaned as she felt a pain in her stomach.
"I guess I'll just tell them the wedding's off then?"
However, Kara became even more worried when Shmi rolled herself off the bed and onto the floor. Kara quickly rushed over to help her stepmother, but that was when the blanket started to rise up higher than Shmi's height. And when the blanket fell down, Kara saw something big, bronze, and scaley.
Kara gasped, and screamed when the creature turned around to reveal a big bronze dragon!
"Dragon!" Kara exclaimed.
"Dragon?" said Shmi's voice, and then she saw her shadow, and then her reflection in the mirror.
And in place of a shriek, Shmi let out a mighty roar. She was horrified. Her entire body was covered in scales, she now had a long tail and wings, her hands turned into scaley clawed paws. And as she panicked, she ended up breaking almost everything in the room, leaving claw marks wherever her claws struck, and accidentally snorting a bit of fire that would've spread, had Kara not found a pitcher of water and dowsed it in time.
"Mom!" Kara gasped. "You're...You're a dragon!"
"I know I'm a dragon!" Shmi said. "How did this happen?"
"Why a dragon is the question..." said Kara. Then she face palmed with a groan. "That crazy gypsy gave me a bad spell."
"What... gypsy?" Shmi said, glaring at Kara.
"It's not my fault." Kara defended. "I didn't ask her to change you into a dragon. I just wanted her to change you."
"Change me? As much as I disapprove, you couldn't have been specific in how you wanted me changed?" Shmi said angrily, and she let out another mighty roar, which everyone in the ballroom heard.
Shmi went on and on to Kara about how she shouldn't have been so reckless and none of this would have happened if she'd just been a good princess and gone through with the gathering and betrothal.
"There's no point in having a go at me," said Kara. "The witch is to blame. And maybe I wouldn't have needed to ask for a spell if you'd just listened to me in the first place."
"Don't you try to twist this on me, young lady." Shmi said, picking up her crown and putting it on her head.
Her dresses were now way too small to fit her now.
Meanwhile, Qui-Gon was curious about where that roar came from.
"I better go make sure my ladies are okay." Qui-Gon said.
"Now there is a quality all ladies should look for in a husband." Satine nodded in approval of how Qui-Gon showed concern for his queen.
"I only hope this won't be another dragon hunt." Obi-Wan said.
"I wanna fight a dragon!" Wrecker shouted.
Shmi wrapped a blanket around herself like a toga and started to move back to the ballroom, but Kara tried to stop her.
"Mom, wait! You can't go out like this!" Kara said.
"And why not?"
"Um, hello? You're a dragon! If anyone so much as sees you you're dead."
"Kara," said Qui-Gon. "What's going on up there?"
"Nothing, Daddy." Kara said. "Everything is fine."
"Where is your mother?"
"I'm fine, Qui-Gon. But don't come up here. I'm... not myself at the moment."
Unfortunately, that made Qui-Gon want to see his wife more.
"Shmi, I'm worried about you." Qui-Gon said, starting to get closer.
Kara quickly got Shmi to move down the hall and to another part of the castle, but then she dropped her blanket and attempted to cover herself with her wings and tail.
"Mom! You're covered in scales. No one is gonna see you." said Kara.
Inconveniently, Aayla did see Shmi, and she ran off screaming.
"Oh, now you've done it." Kara said.
Even more inconveniently, Aayla ran into the guys and screamed that she'd seen a dragon in the castle.
"A dragon?!" Carmine panicked.
Qui-Gon immediately panicked and rushed to his room, worried the dragon got to his wife. And sure enough, when he got there, he saw claw marks everywhere, and the whole room was a mess! He immediately called for there to be a hunt for the dragon that very likely kidnapped his queen.
